Thought some of you would be interested in this recent column by Chuck Landon.  I suspect the reason the 16-team model is not getting pressed right now has more to do with the proposed new playoff distribution model that would penalize non-power conferences with more the 12 members than the factors that Chuck cites.

I have to question CUSA's thought process adding all of those Sun Belt schools. A better way to go would be to add 5-6 or MAC schools to take the conference North-South like the Mountain West. UTSA, FAU, MTSU, WKU all out and NIU, Ball State, Toledo, OHIO in the conference instead with a division that included Marshall and Old Dominion. Not sure if that would be a good idea for Ohio but it would be better for CUSA to have that kind of alignment.

I doubt that Rice, UTEP, UAB and So Miss would've gone along with adding MAC teams.  Too much travel; too many "Yankee" teams; too many small stadiums.  I can't remember the last time any MAC school played any of those four schools in football.  Maybe Rice a couple years ago.  The only way they could've kept the remnants of CUSA together was to bring in schools that are south of the Mason-Dixon Line and with at least the potential for decent stadium capacities (only FIU, Charlotte, ODU and WKU have stadiums with less than 30,000 capacity, but at least Charlotte and FIU have bigger stadiums nearby).

If Rice and UAB think they're better than anyone, they're mistaken. Those 2 schools both reside at the very bottom of FBS right now. From both a competitiveness and fan interest standpoint.

They also think beyond football, and should take the other sports and athletes into consideration.

and yet last years Rice attendance would be third in the MAC, just 200/game behind Toledo. UAB would be above 6 MAC teams, not quite the bottom of the barrel , but you can see it from there.

I don't think it has anything to do with being better than anyone.  I think it's more a geography issue.  Schools (and fans) tend to gravitate toward other schools in their region.  The MAC has been recognized as mostly a Midwest conference; CUSA has been largely a southern conference.  UCF wasn't a good fit for the MAC.  Army wasn't a good fit for CUSA.  I could see teams from Kentucky or Tenn with MAC teams.  But Gulf Coast?  Nope.

Rice and UAB are tickets sold programs as many are in CUSA. The only schools in CUSA that could equal Ohio's game day attendance with two mid week games on the schedule are Marshall and Southern Miss.

I would think that every program in the NCAA is a tickets sold program, but I don't know that for sure. We can't forget that free students are included in our numbers. Not sure how many places charge their students.
