Nothing specific in this article, but still interesting reading.  Note that MAC schools are discussing the possibility of "a postseason game in a smaller city in the league's footprint...."

Nothing says league on the upswing like competing for a spot in the Toledo Bowl.

Not sure that would fit the profile of a "smaller" city...

Canton is the one that stands out to me. Could make for a game with a little intrigue and flair...

As fast as people are leaving Detroit, it might fit the description "down the road."

I could see where they could put a lower tier bowl game in Louisville pitting the ACC against the MAC. Louisville is a progressive city when it comes to college sports and Papa John's with the chairbacks doesn't feel like an NFL stadium.  The drive is reasonable to Louisville from most MAC campuses but not a place most MAC fans would normally visit which makes the destination unique.

I'm sorry, but if we're talking about a december/january bowl game in a glorified high school stadium then I think your quote should read "could make for a game with little intrigue or flair"

I don't think the stadium in Canton has enough seats to be a NCAA bowl game. Drove by the stadium recently and its not in very good shape at all.

I looked up the attendance figures from last years bowl games. Looking them over and knowing that the stadiums are never full and figures are mostly padded...a small venue might create an optimal level of excitement. I'd rather have a SRO crowd at Fawcett Stadium (holds 22.5K) or even The new field at U of Akron (34K) than a closed upper deck and 3/4 full lower bowl at Ford Field.
With the Football HOF right there it actually may hold even more appeal than a Christmas trip to Detroit. It's, at least, a "push" in entertainment/vacation value.

Don't you all more favor a warm weather site in late December or early January?  Isn't a break from the cold weather a part of the appeal?

That's what the thinking about the Super Bowl used to be.  It's the reward for a good season, so it should be in a warmer clime.  But they've had it in domes in Minnesota and Indiana and they're about to have it outdoors in New Jersey, so who knows.  After seeing our guys just as happy to win in Idaho as in Louisiana, I don't think it matters to the kids.  As for the fans, I think it depends on where you are and when the game is played.  Getting to Boise in mid-December isn't very easy for people east of Mississippi who have kids still in school.  Games between Christmas and New Year's are better for most people, no matter where they are.  I guess it depends on whether you're there primarily for the game and the events that go with it or you want the game to be part of a larger vacation experience.

the last two times ohio has played at akron I have stopped at canton on the way up to catch early college football. That stadium is a dump. Not as bad as the rubber bowl(nothing will ever be that bad)but a dump just the same.

I can see a bowl happening at InfoCision Stadium in Akron.  Well within the footprint of the MAC and a pretty damn good stadium.  The only downside would be dealing with Northeast Ohio weather in December/January...

This is all we need...another lower tier "bowl" in an undesirable tourist destination in a bad weather month.

What about something like the Palmetto Bowl in Columbia, South Carolina in Brice-Eckles?  Charleston would be a better location but what would be the largest stadium?  The Citadel?

Would be in a warmer location and in the Sun Belt footprint.

Nashville seems like an option, in the Sunbelt's footprint via MTSU (though as I type this I can't remember if MTSU will be in the Sunbelt going forward or not).

MTSU will be a new CUSA team starting in the 2013-2014 school year.

When I lived in Chucktown six or so years ago, there was talk about having the Palmetto Bowl there. It's was rumored that ESPN was pushing for it. The sticking point had to do with the renovation of the Citadel's stadium. To get the bowl, they had to increase the seats significantly, something the Citadel didn't want to do.

There were also some rumors that the whole Confederate flag  issue was keeping it from happening. As they say in Charleston, "Keep it flying, South Carolina. Heritage not hate. States' rights. Happiness is a Northbound Yankee. War of Northern aggression."
