Word out of South Bend this morning is that Gunner Kiel will be transferring. I am a follower of Notre Dame football and this comes as no real surprise. What are the chances that he ends up at a MAC program? Clearly, he struggled with the idea of going to school away from home and the MAC offers a number of opportunities in and around Indiana. It also seems to me like these BCS caliber "blue-chip" guys never make lateral transfers but end up at non-AQ conferences. That last statement could be taken as conjecture but a few notable examples that come to mind would be G.J Kinne (Texas to Tulsa), Garrett Gilbert (Texas to SMU), Jameill Showers (TAMU to UTEP). There were another 6 to 10 guys who made similar moves last year alone (www.athlonsports.com/college-football/college-footballs-transfers-watch-2012).

So many times we hear the kid is leaving because he wants to be close to home and then ends up somewhere quite far away from home.  So, who knows.  But, if he was that highly recruited I could see Big 10 schools going after him.

If he's not a complete head case, I'll take him at Ohio.  I'm sure Ball State would love to have him.

If he's looking for some place closer to home (Columbus, IN), IU, L'ville & Cincy would be the best bets.  BSU and Fiami would have the inside track for non-AQs.

So the Gunner Kiel or Maty Mauk drama all plays out and Notre Dame ends up with neither of them in the end. Shows why recruiting reporting and talk is usually so non-consequential to me.

Is it just that for some it is better to be on the field anywhere than on the bench for ND/USC/OSU/MU/FSU/TX? The loss of a down the depth chart player only helps the great programs by opening a ship the next year. Sounds like a big deal when a five star leaves, but, these are usually best for both sides deals.

I would  say Indiana would be the logical choice.

Doesn't (or didn't) his brother play (or used to play) at IU?  I seem to remember that when watching some of those HS Football games on ESPN.

His brother Dusty was in line to be the starting quarterback at Indiana last year. He got hurt and they had a freshman, Tre Roberson, lock down the starting QB spot. As a result, I am pretty sure he left the program.

I'm all for players leaving a program if they truly believe it is in their best interest, to be closer to family, etc.  but sometimes I get a little irritated about the number of players who leave a program over hurt feelings.  If you are 6 on the depth chart I can see wanting to better your situation but if you barely lost out on the starting job tough it out and keep pushing.  Everyone gets better that way.  Besides you are only one injury away from being the starter.

I think the entitled, spoon-fed generation plays out in athletics too much, especially when you find out that the transfer didn't pan out and they are back at home doing nothing.

I would have scrubbed toilets for a D-1 program if they offered me a scholarship in high school.  But I guess that's me.

I suspect this also has a lot to do with players' inability to judge their true talent and their entourage (friends, players, parents, coaches, etc) being unable to judge the talent or unwilling to tell it to the players.

It's offishal.  He isn't going to any of ND's upcoming opponents: Temple, Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Arizona State, USC, Air Force, Navy, Pitt, BYU and Stanford.  Leaves open the likes of IU, Cincy and L'ville.

Per ESPN NCAA Football rumors, Ohio is in the conversation for Gunner Kiel.

UPDATE: Staying with the theme of today's Rumor Central additions, a Gunner Kiel update should be included with the exodus of Notre Dame transfers. A pair of MAC schools could be added to Kiel's list of options.

"With Purdue (out of) the equation (they're on Notre Dame's schedule) MAC schools on former Col. East QB Gunner Kiel's list should include Ball St, (Bowling Green) & Ohio," Indiana HS Football tweeted.

Kiel originally wanted to stay close to home and chose Indiana before he flipped to LSU. He finally picked in-state Notre Dame and spent a season with the Fighting Irish before his decision to transfer. Ball State is already one of the primary schools considered as an option for Kiel, but both Bowling Green and Ohio are new additions to the list of possibilities.

Ohio already has one former ND QB on its current roster.

I still haven't decided if I am excited about this possibility. A legitimate 5-star high school prospect, lots of potential, etc..........but commits to IU and then decommits, commits to LSU and then decommits, signs with ND and after a year transfers out. If Ohio is the right place for him academically and athletically, I'd love to have him in Athens. But I hope his head and heart are in the right place and that it doesn't stir up drama.

At some point the option to transfer ceases to be practical. His next stop will probably be his last one, so I hope he picks a place where he feels comfortable, and gives it his best shot.

Granted I have always dreamed about Ohio having a 5 star QB, but even if he grew up and had his head on straight he's a pro style QB right? I'm not certain he would flourish in our spread option offense. I have never played football but how difficult would it be to transition from a pro style QB to a mobile double threat QB? Would Solich revamp the offense just so it would suit Kiel?

I don't think it would be terribly difficult to put a pro-style QB into our system. The key in our system is getting the safety to bite on the run. If he does, you pull it back and throw it over the top. If he doesn't, you hand it off. It's nice having a QB that can break off a long run, but an accurate deep ball is a bigger weapon, so long as the QB has enough athletic skill to avoid a major loss of yards.

Edited to add: The running QB does help keep the front 7 from collapsing on the RB, but I think even a pro-style QB should have enough athletic ability to keep the defense honest, so long as he actually does keep it and run from time to time. That's where T^2's injury hurt us last year. The D knew he wasn't going to run and risk further injury, so there wasn't any reason to respect that option.

Makes a lot of sense.  With both Kay and Legeaux graduating at the end of next season, UC should be wide open at QB in '14 so even sitting a season won't put him that much behind the curve.  There's no guarantee that Teddy B will go pro after this season and IU will have its QB battle this season.  Cincy seems to be the best bet.

Not surprising.  They're pretty much the only program that he was looking at that was anything close to big time.  Even if Cinci stay in the American Conference, they have a lot more funds and much better facilities than any MAC school does.
