USC mid-week games Thurs 8/29 Hawaii (CBS), Thurs 10/10 Arizona (Fox), Friday 11/1 Oregon State. (ESPN2)

It was obvious that the midweek games are too valuable for the bigs not to eye them.

Umm, midweek is defined as football on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday nights. Friday night is the start of the weekend for most Americans. For many others the start is Thursday and plenty of people if they don't have Friday off are willing to take a vacation day once a year to travel in for a football game. Almost all of the conferences have some Thursday and Friday games. The MAC is will put a game like Buffalo vs. Ohio on a Tuesday that isn't a big game to begin with and attendance plummets.

From what I can remember, with the exception of the first Thursday of the season and holidays, the Big 10 and SEC don't play weekday games. I think the Big 12 and now the Pac 10 just recently started playing a few. It's a new trend for TV and money that comes with it.

I still don't think games being on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in MAC play causes attendance to "plummet." It seems to drop slightly compared to other games in November when attendance already is dropping anyway.

College football is traditionally Saturday. Which leaves plum spots on six other days of the week. Which was very smart for the MAC to pursue as a way to boost visibility.

Which was bound to attract notice by 'the powers.' Such as USC.

I don't get the point of discussion about what days are really 'weekdays.'

How much of it lies with the schools though? Fox Sports Southern Rhode Island, NBCSN, ESPN8 the Ocho, and the Longhorn Network all need to broadcast something. If you open a broadcasting slot, they will come, no?

Except the MAC didn't get there first. ESPN had always put bigger conferences on Thursday night since they began Thursday night football.

The first Thursday night telecast was BYU vs. PITT on September 1st 1984. Thursday night games were originally earmarked for Big East level conferences though when those programs joined the ACC the ACC became a bastion of Thursday night football. The first MAC midweek game was about 1999. The MAC may have been first to play on a Wednesday or Tuesday night but I'm not sure about that.

FWIW; Thursday night football started out in 1986 showing 1-AA games and then changed to 1-A when the big schools decided they wanted the money and exposure. I remember watching a Thursday night game where GA Southern played a home game in a tropical storm or a hurricane.

"Calling the first of these weeknight affairs experiments may not be exactly accurate, but I-A schools didn't come begging to get on the air, either. They didn't like the upheaval they feared it would cause for fans traveling to their games, or to students on campus.

Thursday Night Football actually started back in 1986 when ESPN began showing the primetime games with I-AA teams. If you are old enough to remember Holy Cross star Gordie Lockbaum's Heisman Trophy campaign, you'll remember that he got a big boost by playing on Thursday night."

I should have said as far as I can remember which was around 92 it was predominately Big 8 or WAC games. I remember seeing Kansas a few times.
