W/L records, average Points in conference games:
                             W-L     PCT         PF      PA
NIU           33-7  .825    38.6   20.0
Temple        21-11 .656    28.1   18.8
Ohio          26-14 .650    27.8   24.4
Toledo        25-15 .625    33.2   30.0
Kent          23-17 .575    25.6   23.5
Ball St       23-17 .575    29.2   28.2
CMU           22-18 .550    30.4   28.1
WMU           22-18 .550    32.6   26.5
BG            20-20 .500    25.5   24.4
Miami         15-25 .375    22.5   27.8
Buffalo       14-26 .350    22.4   27.9
EMU            9-31 .225    21.0   36.3
Akron          6-34 .150    20.0   35.2
U.Mass         1-7  .125    15.8   36.0

I note teams in the MAC East tend to win with defense, while those in the West win with offense. Ohio, Temple, BG, and Kent were four of the top five defenses. The top five offenses were NIU, Toledo, WMU, CMU, and Ball State. Only NIU was a top team in both offense and defense, which is why they have by far the best record over this period.

Temple with all those wins, but not one over OHIO

You know what Frank Solich likes most about coaching in the MAC? While he gets older, his coaching competition stays the same age, man.

Five years includes Temple's 14-10 victory over Ohio in 2008.

Could be style of play or coaches decisions but what stands out to me is how dominant NIU is.  Their margin of vioctory seems to indicate they really are the top of the MAC.  We've obviously been good but won a lot of closer games.

NIU has also traditionally been one of the lowest ranked MAC teams in recruiting ranking. It would seem that they may get a lot of under-the radar guys from Illinois and Wisconsin? The rest of the MAC seems to beat itself up scouring Indiana-Ohio-Pennsylvania for under-the-radar types, while NIU may get Illinois-Wisconsin-Iowa all to itself as there are no other non-BCS FBS schools in that area.

Sure enough, I looked at the recruiting, and they get most of their players from Illinois and Wisconsin, and usually the only schools they are competing with are Bowling Green, WMU, and Ball State, plus FCS schools like North Dakota State, S.Illinois, E. Illinois, and W. Illinois. When you are able to cherry pick the best of the talent that slips beneath the BCS schools, it really helps. Ohio has been able to do that with Nebraska, and it has helped a lot. NIU apparently is able to do that with Illinois and Wisconsin.

This is why I've always found the MAC to be so intriguing. Instead of 1-4 teams searching for talent in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, the MAC brings what, 10? After OSU, Michigan, MSU, PSU, Pitt, WVU and Cincy get their guys, there are still enough scraps left over for the MAC to breed good competition.

NIU doesn't seem to skip a beat either with talent or coaching.  I think this will be the fifth coach/QB combo they've had in the last five years.

One thing that struck me was UMass's numbers.  They averaged 15.8 on offense & 36 on defense last season.  But they had more than twice their average offensive point total against us (34).  Fortunately, they gave up their average + a point on defense.

Notice also that five of the bottom six schools are from the East (although if you combined Temple and UMass to get a five-year total, they would be 22-18, which would mean "only" four of the bottom five are from the East).

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

It amazes me that OHIO is only 3 wins ahead of Kent State the last 5 years and only 1 point of MOV ahead yet the Flashes didn't have very much respect in the MAC media poll. Its very possible they finish near or at the top of the East again this season. It looked for a while about 10 years ago that Akron was going to develop into a good football school but I think the unjustified firing of Lee Owens and the drug related deaths sent this program down a spiraling hole. Terry Bowden this time around has bitten off more than he can chew by taking the Akron job and I don't expect he'll have the success necessary to move onto a higher profile conference. Akron might let him hang around for a while with marginal success but the guy is going to be 58 next year. He would have to do an oustanding job for anyone else to consider him at his age and I just don't see it in the cards.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

we don't do a very good job of running up the score on weaker teams and it shows, I hope that changes this year.
