That's actually a throwback design honoring the '73 team who won the Bourbon Bowl and had big wins over a Hayden Fox led Minnesota State team, Faber College, and Adams College.

Thanks for the link. But it shows the Louisville game as a home game?

Just looking over that chart reminds me of how weak our schedule is. It's a strategy for success, but we're missing at least 1 money game that most other MAC teams have .

Question, and not really directed at anyone, but C66 brings up a great point, if our schedule is so week, why do some feel we should be ranked at any point in the season. I will acknowledge a Louisville win, but that's it! Rest of this schedule is simply built to pad the W's.

there are those folks that think its all about the number of wins, regardless of the quality . The problem with that line of reasoning is that, while we can't control the quality of MAC teams, we have more control over the OOC schedule. We chose the easy route, which leads to more wins, not necessarily quality wins. I understand this philosophy when you're trying to change the downward trajectory of a program , we'll see if it changes as we get more established as a winning program. The home and homes with Cincy and Kansas may be a sign of a changing philosophy. I hope so.

SOS is a myth. You have to look beyond wins and losses.

Ohio plays 8 MAC teams, that's 8 teams with nearly identical budgets, resources, support, and level of talent. Total parity. Regardless of the other teams' win/loss record that makes each game a challenge as there are no institutional advantages baked into the equation.

Now compare that to a school like OSU who will play a couple of schools with similar budgets, resources, support and level of talent like Michigan, Penn State, or Wisconsin, but then also plays several schools like Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, etc. where it has huge advantages over the other teams.

OOC- Ohio plays four OOC games, 2 home 2 away, vs 1 FCS team that it has a clear advantage over, 1 G5 school from out of the region NMSU/UNT/Idaho that has similar budgets/resources, etc, Marshall, and 1 BCS team that has huge advantages over Ohio.

Compare that to OSU's OOC who always plays 3 G5 schools (or sometimes 2 G5 and 1 FCS) at home that it has HUGE advantages over, and an avg to below avg BCS school in a home and home series.

Our schedule will always be tough when the systemic challenges are included into the equation.

Part of me would like to agree re criticism of "weak OOC scheduling."  But another part says this is precisely how some formerly weak programs have strengthened their W-L records, visibility and prestige.  Prime example is Bill Snyder whom many are ready to "cannonize."

This is his 5th season of his second stint at Kansas State.  Total: 22 seasons.  He began his first stint with weak OOC schedules, never deviated and is continuing that approach in his second stint.  This year KSU opens by hosting North Dakota State, Louisiana and UMass.

Open Phil Steele's mag and take a look at the OOC schedules for all FBS programs.  To me MANY look as "weak" as Ohio's.  Baylor, for example, opens by hosting Wofford, Buffalo and ULM.  Oh, and our younger and much bigger sister up the road in Columbus?  OSU opens by hosting Buffalo and San Diego State, travels to Cal and returns to take on Florida A&M.  Does that look even a smidgen tougher than Ohio opening at Louisville before returning to take on North Texas, Marshall and Austin Peay?

I'm just comparing other MAC teams OOC with ours. I'm not comparing with teams who have tougher in conference schedules. I'm not losing any sleep over our SOS, just wondering if it will change anytime soon. If not, I'm not boycotting the team like some others, nor will I lead any walkouts in protest. I still buy season tickets. And go seldom anyway.

Anyone who goes undefeated, regardless of their sched, deserves high ranking.  Undefeated is just so difficult to achieve.

Scheduling ain't easy.  First, aren't they made up a handful of years in advance--so some power of predicting the future (how strong of an opponent will a given team be?) is required.  As all know, MAC sched is a given, so can't change or control that.  Then, there's the ongoing debate between give me home games! (but Peden's size limits revenue potential, limits the # of teams who'll come to Athens).  Plus teams don't want to come here and 'tarnish their rep' by losing to little old O H I O.  And, of course, there's always the need for road "money" games.

All of the above is obvious and true.  So, keep it in mind.

Is our sched this year ideal?  No.  But it's pretty fair.  Now, re-read Mike Johnson's post.  And look at what GotFrank has actually achieved for us over his term.

It works.

In regards to our OOC schedule I think the basic structure is fine-

1. Payday game against a P5 team that is tough but beatable. Always away.
2. Marshall. Home and away.
3. FCS team. Always home.
4. Avg to below avg G5 team from outside of the region. Home and Away

I think the next step for Ohio is to improve the 4th option to a regional low level P5 team that will be willing to do a 1x1 agreement. Kansas in '16 and '17 is a start.

Schools like WMU who schedule 3 B1G schools in September aren't impressing anyone with their 1-3 start and tough SOS.

It is my impression that the schedules are getting more difficult. There is still one FCS on the schedule, which is needed to get 6 home games a year, but you 1:1 teams are moving up from the likes of NTSU and NMSU to the likes of Kansas over the years ahead.
