Received my Ohio Bobcat Club 2013-14 brochure in the mail today:

Among the 8 MAC schools listed (including we), we are 5th in annual dollars raised for athletics and slightly below the MAC average at an annual total of about $500k.

Our number of donors to athletics is 7th of the 8 schools and, of course, below the MAC average.  Total number of donors about 1050.

Weak.

Wow...I hadn't seen this but just checked out my brochure and noticed the same thing. Anyone else pretty surprised by this??

We lead the MAC in football and basketball attendance, and it was pretty well publicized that we set the MAC record for ticket revenue last season. The fan support is there - and we're clearly making money off of those fans. But how can we be so low with the donations? Are we missing out on something...what are the other schools doing better?

Perhaps it's merely a product of being in southeast Ohio...but the crowds we've been getting tell me otherwise. We need to do better!

I'm guessing that our history of losing in football kept us down all those years. We have only had the Bobcat club for 4-5 years or so, we got a late start there. We'll do fine, but it will take decades to get where we need to be. And that's only if we keep winning after Frank retires. I'm guessing like you that our presence in SE Ohio hurts as well. We have little chance of getting large corporate gifts from anyone in the local community, they just aren't there.

Maybe, but BGSU was well behind us.

For reference, here is what was listed:

Akron: $850,000 (Huh???)
NIU: $650,000
Miami: $600,000
Toledo: $550,000
Ohio: $500,000
Ball State: $500,000
WMU: $400,000
BGSU: $300,000

Lower than $300,000: CMU, Buffalo, EMU, Kent State

I would agree with the above posters:
1. Winning for a long time is more important for athletic donations than just a few years of winning.
2. Many athletic donations come from corporate donors, and the location in SE Ohio hurts in that regard.

I would add another point. Based on the analysis I did of endowment giving, winning in football will much more quickly have an impact on general fund giving than on athletic fund giving. I know that sounds strange, but that's what I saw. I attribute it to the fact that alums see the team on TV, and think about the old days at school, and that encourages them to give to the University, but not specifically to athletics.

Given the success of Ohio football in recent years, I would guess that donations to the Ohio general fund should be up quite a bit over a decade ago. To confirm my hypothesis, I decided to look it up. I found these numbers for giving to the Ohio University Foundation. Reading the financials, these are the numbers listed for gifts:
Year ended June 30, 2005 $5.8 million, net assets $182.5m
Year ended June 30, 2006 $35.7 million, net assets $218.8m
Year ended June 30, 2007 $8.2 million, net assets $239.6m
Year ended June 30, 2008 $94.4 million, net assets $312.2 million
Year ended June 30, 2009 $23.4 million, net assets $266.7 million
Year ended June 30, 2010 $14.6 million, net assets $324.8 million
Year ended June 30, 2011 $27.7 million, net assets $385.6 million
Year ended June 30, 2012 $20.6 million, net assets $417.4 million

These don't exactly coincide with the improvement of the football team, but there is a very good correlation. There are no doubt other effects, not the least of which is the overall economy. Clearly the economy as a whole is not as healthy as it was in 2005, yet giving is at a much, much higher level today than it was back then. I think partly this reflects the performance of the football team, which in turn increases awareness in the University, and pride in the university.

Of course, it's preaching to the choir to discuss this on this board.  I'm sure that a significant amount of the non-business donations are represented here.

That said, I urge all who are not Bobcat Club members to start.  Do an auto-bank-draft for$5-25 per month.  For those who are members, make it your goal to get just one other person to join the Bobcat Club this year on an auto-draft basis.

There is no reason for us to be ranked so low in the MAC.  Below average given the alumni-friend affinity for O H I O--are you kidding me?!

When I first saw this mailing I was shocked, then pissed.

But I have no doubt that OUr people, OUr process, and OUr product will outdo these MAC foes over the next ten years.

I think the Ohio Bobcat club is still relatively new compared to some of the other booster organization and its growth has been awesome. I started 3 years ago at the minimum and have increased each year.

Is this the time to bring up the idea of merchandising more of the highlights videos of the great FB and MBB seasons? I think there was good consensus on this board that we and other alums would pay for it.
