Per ESPN's Brett McMurphy, there will be an ESPN-owned bowl in Montgomery, Alabama between the MAC and Sun Belt, starting in 2014....

UPDATE: Will be named the Camellia Bowl, played at Cramton Bowl, Alabama State's old stadium until 2012, now used by the Faulkner Eagles from NAIA...

Revival of the Blue-Gray Classic, but this time with actual teams? Christmas without football is definitely missing something. Now all we get is NBA and 8 year olds with BB guns over and over and over and over.....

If its in the new Alabama State stadium, it wouldn't be too bad. I'm for more bowls, but I recognize that many don't feel that way. I'm not ribbons for everybody and see a big difference in the two.

MAC ANNOUNCES CREATION OF CAMELLIA BOWL IN 2014; MONTGOMERY, ALA-BASED BOWL OWNED & OPERATED BY ESPN   MAC vs. Sun Belt matchup to begin in 2014 college football bowl season.

Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced today the creation of the Camellia Bowl, a newly created bowl game to begin in 2014, which will be based in Montgomery, Alabama, owned and operated by ESPN.  The Camellia Bowl will feature a MAC bowl eligible football program to face a member of the Sun Belt Conference for the next six consecutive football seasons (2014-2019) in a pre-Christmas game televised nationally by ESPN or ESPN2.

“The Mid-American Conference is proud to partner in the creation of the Camellia Bowl beginning with the 2014 season,” said Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, Mid-American Conference Commissioner.  “The historic Cramton Bowl will be a great venue for our student-athletes and fans.  Additionally, Montgomery’s entertainment district will provide a fun and lively bowl experience for all involved.  I want to thank all parties involved for their diligence in creating this event, especially Montgomery mayor Todd Strange.”

The Camellia Bowl will be played in the Cramton Bowl, a 25,000 seat stadium that has undergone significant renovations over the last several years, including a new press box facility, locker rooms and VIP hospitality accommodations.

Beginning in the 2014 bowl season, the Camellia Bowl will be the third bowl game where the MAC is a primary bowl partner.  The MAC has long-term primary contracts with the Go Daddy Bowl (based in Mobile, Ala.) through the 2017 season and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (based in Boise, Ida.) through the 2019 season.

“The Raycom All-Star game helped shine a new light on the city of Montgomery, and we took notice,” said Pete Derzis, Senior Vice President & GM, ESPN Regional Television. “From stadium improvements and opportunities for quality hospitality, to the downtown hotel properties, rich history and the wonderful museums like the Rosa Parks Center, it all came together for us. We have two conference partners excited about the bowl, a community we believe is hungry for a quality postseason event and civic and business leaders that have a great can-do spirit.”

Johnny Williams, former Athletic Director at Troy University for ten years and Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Alabama for three years, will be the Bowl’s Executive Director. Williams is the current CEO of Creative Marketing Management (CMM) and his group will manage the event and day-to-day operations of the bowl. - See more at: http://www.mac-sports.com/tabid/969/Article/261088/MAC-An...>

Well upon further review, not so sure it's a good fit. No air service to speak of, and a drive from Atlanta. While they've done $11,000,000 on upgrades since 2011, not sure that its got all the bells and whistles . But hey, it's another MAC bowl, so OK by me.

Great news. Going from Detroit to Alabama for a bowl is win.

Plus, the stadium is going to be great as the size should make it a sellout every year and create a great atmosphere.

The destination and opponent is getting overblown hate. Another bowl and more ESPN time is good for the MAC.

I've seen crazier things happen.

This is just a sign of things to come with realignment.  Big deal, The BIG5 are trying to get another match up of  little 5 teams in a bowl game.  Looks like some more scraps for the little guys.  Why couldn't it be a MAC or Sun Belt team vs a BIG5 conference team.

You do know, don't you, that part of the new arrangement is a guaranteed BCS vs Best-of-the-Gang-of-5 Bowl.  The only hitch in this, as I understand it, is that the Gang of 5 has not yet agreed to it because of legal issues.  Some schools feel that signing on to this bowl agreement would negate their ability to later sue for anti-trust violations.  I haven't heard much about this for a few months, so maybe it's been finalized by now, but the last I heard there were still a few holdouts among the non-BCS FBS schools.

I've noticed that all the contracts being made are Omegas vs Omegas.  They don't want to schedule Deltas as a primary opponent for a bowl game because Omegas can't stand food fights and toga parties.  Probably the only times you'll see Omegas vs. Deltas is when there aren't enough from an Omega conference to fill a commitment or maybe against someone like BYU in the Poinsettia Bowl.
