No Ox Roast this season.  This from Arkley:

— It's now official: Ohio University will not hold it's annual Ox Roast meet-and-greet this year. The event, free to the public, offered food and a chance for fans to visit Peden Stadium while meeting many of Ohio's current student-athletes. Dan Hauser, Ohio Senior Associate AD for External Operations, said Ohio is exploring other options. "We just decided to move in a different direction this year." Hauser said Ohio may revisit the annual event next year, and added that Ohio's decision not to hold the Ox Roast was not limited solely to the inability to find a principal sponsor for the event.

Hmmmm...Citizens Bank had been the sponsor for a couple years and probably footed a good portion of the bill. I've heard rumors that they are on the verge of financial ruin, so it's not surprising.

A shame that the Ox Roast is no more - but understand that it probably cost a lot of $$$ to feed everyone for free.

Nope.....it was Sonic (and Rax prior to that) with Jim Herpe footing the bulk of the costs, generally about  $10K a year.  The bank was not a player.

I know that's how it used to be (Sonic/Rax), but it was Citizens Bank for at least a couple years now. Found this from last year that references their sponsorship: http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/081312aah.html

You are right about last year but that is the only time.  Herpe was primary for well over 30 years.

Up until last year the Green and White Club funded this program to the tune of $2000 to $2500 per year and provided the majority of the volunteers.

So now that we're a little more than a year past the dissolving of the Green and White Club, can someone from the Athletics Department list a few reasons why this is BETTER for the school?

I think even Alan would admit that the Athletics Dept. did not dissolve the Green & White Club. Now, were there decisions made that contributed to it's demise?? Sure. But no one was forcing that issue. The status quo could have continued. I've spoken with a few in athletics that were disappointed to see it go.

I have an idea....all the people that were going to or already have purchased those idiotic black seats for this basketball season instead give that money to make the Ox Roast happen...

Especially 695, after all it is his fault Ohio went on a 3-game losing streak after he paraded down the sideline in front of the OZone for the BG game, pretending he was somebody...

I found the thread that covered this when it happened last year: http://www.bobcatattack.com/messageboard/topic.asp?FromPa...

As a former G&W Club member myself, I was sad to see it go. I admired all of the work that went into making it such a great organization for fans. With it gone, the Ox Roast gone, tailgate location confusion, no football schedule posters available, etc. I just wonder how community relations/gameday experiences are really better for fans now that the G&W Club is gone (outside of the fantastic on-field/on-court performances of FB and MBB).

Actually had a conversation last year with a long time board member of the Green and White, and they told me that at one time they had received from the Athletic Department dissolving the group.  I am not sure how true this is, but I am sure some here could shed some light.

I'm glad to see the department came to their senses and moved on from this "Ox Roast."

Not only did it contain hints of paganism (ritualistic sacrifice and slaughter of an animal to ensure success in the coming season) but it also symbolized Ohio athletics continued "screw you" to their MANY vegetarian and vegan fans. I can't tell you how many athletic department events I've been to where the only thing I can eat is some stupid chips and salsa! Hey guys, its 2013, how difficult would it be to pick up a few boca burgers....or god forbid some delicious field roast vegan sausages!?

But no...just meat! All meat! How many animals must give their lives to Jim Schaus before we stop the insanity?

I can only assume they'll be replacing this orgy of animal violence with something a bit more civilized like a Seitan Roast or a vegan chilli cook-off.

-Paul

Personally, I'm opposed to offering vegetarian options, on moral grounds. But thats just me.

There is a certain amount of truth to that. The club would be absorbed by the bobcat club but we would continue as a tailgate committee of volunteers. There were too many unanswered questions for us such as the Ox Roast, senior banquet, split the pot (remember those things) that we decided not to merge. As club membership continued to decline the board voted to dissolve and establish a scholarship fund for students who had served in a support capacity for OU athletics. It was a fun 54 year right but as George Harrison "all good things must come to pass" or something like that.
