He was with them at the end of last season, at least on the practice squad.  Glad to see he was invited back for fall camp this year.

"he wasn't very successful as a quarterback.... He moved over to wide receiver -- he wasn't very productive...but at the same time, I gotta tell you: When I watched him in mini-camp, I thought -- 'This is a grown-ass man."

that's the most accurate assessment of a player I've ever read.

This may affect Phil's status:  Percy Harvin may need surgery.  He's starting camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Harvin to have surgery, out at least 3-4 months (I realize that pro football players are as close to athletic superhumans as we get, and there are millions of dollars of resources available to help the recover as quickly as possible, but how is it possible to break your hip and be playing football 3 months later?).

With advanced treatments, fancy drugs and determination, pro athletes of all kinds can do some incredible/insane things. There was a guy in this year's Tour de France who rode most of the 2,115 miles with a fractured pelvis.

How do you figure? ISU moved him to WR, and the kid quit! Coach saw the opportunity to grab a kid he could have never landed out of HS. The kid would have NEVER come here under the guise of playing WR and not QB. If anything Frank was honest and messed around and wasted time trying to be honest. Kudos to Coach! But the real screw up here is/was Phil's resistance to making a career move.

As I recall, Phil relished his time at QB but was willing to be a WR when it became clear T2 was the QB and he could help the team at WR.

One thing I loved about Phil throwing the ball was his insane per attempt numbers. In 2011 he had a QB rating of 450. He threw 5 passes, 4 completions, and 2 touchdowns.

He was a big play guy, an incredible asset to the offense. Especially on those WR reverse (+pass) plays.

At least one of the completions (and I think it was for a TD) was to T2 on a throwback.

I don't enjoy this but let's just say that qb poise, an adequate arm, elusiveness (not just pure straight ahead speed) are necessities.  Didja see the columbus game until Boo came in?

Seahawks-Chargers on NFL Net right now.  Bates just caught a pass on 3rd & 9.  It was well short of the 1st down (about 5 yds), mainly because he was the third or fourth target on the play. But it's good to see him get some action.

It's hard to imagine Bates in the NFL when he barely saw the field here. He was a great athlete...and it's hard for me to believe that he wasn't under-utilized here. You'd think all it would have taken was for him to accept playing WR is to have mentioned that he had a good shot at playing in the league.

This was mentioned. I think that mention was part of the reason he finally agreed to play WR, but by then, it was a few weeks before his senior season. He had a lot to learn in little time.

that was the Temple blackout game. Not to pick on the guy but he had TT 20 yrs down field, as wide open as could be, but didn't have the arm strength to hit him in stride. TT had to stand there and wait for the pass, and the defenders, to catch up to him.

Glad to see he's doing well at WR.

He was in for a few plays in the 4th Q of the GB game last night, but wasn't thrown to.
