How about some unbiased analysis and predictions? Can we take Marshall for the third straight year? My biggest concern is how much better Cato will be this year. Otherwise, I think the Bobcats still have the upper hand.

Cato absolutely shredded us last year. He'd be hard-pressed to duplicate those stats, and they still only scored 24 on us.  If we can just be a little effective at containing their throwing game, I could see us running away with it, because I don't see them holding us to 27 again.

My worry is if they have a runningback this year.  If they have even a decent one it could cause problems for us with Cato's passing game combined with that.

The opposing team sucks!

Keep in mind that we were running with a really inexperienced secondary at Marshall. Hughes wasn't back yet...we had just lost Shaw and obviously Travis. Things should be much better this year.

The Ohio secondary should be much stronger this year with the return of Carrie. I think Ohio will be a 7 point favorite and will cover at home.

I think I would probably make my season predictions now if it weren't for this game. Working in Herdistan, every year I hear, "This is the year! This is the year Marshall is back!" And it never is. Except that if it doesn't happen this year, it isn't going to happen for Holliday, the fan base will desert, and that's that. There's an added sense of urgency that I think Terd gets, so maybe they turn it up a notch on an emotional level.

That being said....we ALWAYS play Terd much better at home than in Huntington. Even in the Dark Days of the Brian Knorr Era, we came really close to knocking them off a couple of times in Athens when they were a borderline top 25 team.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say it comes down to who wins the battles up front on both sides of the ball. Like us, Terd's secondary will be the strong point of their defense this year, but their WR corps took a hit while ours should improve. Terd did develop a stronger running game towards the end of the year last year, but I really like how our D line is looking so far, and I don't think Terd has an answer for the three headed RB monster of Beau, Boykin, and Daz. If I had to pick right now, I think we win a 3-4 point ball game, with a slight edge to Terd in passing stats and moderate edge to us in rushing stats. Game ball to Boykin.

of course, the results of the first games for both teams will be factored in, but I'm guessing more like Ohio maybe a 3 point favorite. I'll give $100 to the Bobcat Club if we hold them under 30.

We could start by not spotting them 14 points...

Marshall has only scored 30+ points in Athens twice in 28 attempts- 30pts in 1998 and 31pts in 1972. Get your checkbook ready.

Paul Meyerburg pegged this Marshall team for the highest expectations in a decade. That's saying something.

Am I overstepping when I say IF (big IF) we beat Louisville this Marshall game will be the biggest non-conference game ever played in Peden? (Consider the signifcantly reduced potential of reaching a BCS bowl moving forward).

Whether or not we're undefeated heading into this game, I just love playing the Herd.

I'm thinking the North Texas game may be the biggest OOC game of the season.  That's a trap game waiting to happen -- a short week, right after L'ville, right before Terd.  Ouch.

Can we beat Terd?  Of course.  Will be beat Terd?  Dunno.  We may have to bring our A game for this one.  Terd may be much improved.  USAT has Terd 40th and Ohio 39th.  CBS actually ranks them ahead of us (although I don't buy Ohio at 79).  This one may come down to the final minutes (although I'd like to see us blow them out like '11).

We will get by.

In case you haven't noticed Cato is pretty good and not a freshman anymore. The chance of a repeat of 2011 is zero

When we played last year we were still trying to fit a round peg into a square hole with Travon Van. It wasn't until the next game at Rice we began using the rotation of Grooms, Butler, and Watson that our running game really took off. Those are 3 excellent backs, and the rushing game is right on par with the passing game.

I think that 2011 game would've gone much differently had Rakeem not thrown a pick on the third play of the game. But I digress...

Right now I'm thinking Marshall will keep it close for 3 quarters, but Ohio will run away with it in the fourth. But if we get down 14-0 like last year, anything can happen...

Marshall's problems with Ohio the last couple of years in both football and basketball hasn't come from a lack of physical talent but from a lack of mental toughness.

Last year Marshall's neanderthal coaches thought it was a good idea to break boards over their backs during pregame to get the team hyped. It worked. too well. Marshall came out strong in the first quarter but the dancing and the posturing and showboating after every single play drained all of their adrenaline. They went flat in Q2 and Ohio put up 17 unanswered points and Marshall never recovered. In 2011 they didn't have the mental toughness to overcome the early mistakes. They were only down 10-7 at the end of the 1st but had already thrown 3 INTs and looked lost and timid. In the 2nd  they had 3 turnovers and a punt while giving up 24 on defense and that was the ball game, the second half was just a formality.

Marshall is good but they'll need to be mentally tough to win in Athens.

If you look at all the games at Peden since they started playing again in 97 Ohio has either won or Marshall won by 7 once and 3 twice. I expect a tough close game that could really go either way.  I don't expect of repeat of 2011 but something more similar to 98, 2002 or 2004.

but out of the 24,000 this week 5 to 8 thousand of them will be Marshall fans. I believe Ohio has to give Marshall 5000 tickets plus another couple thousand  probably bought em from the Ohio ticket office.

Last I saw Marshall is 7 point favorites.

the big difference will be 3000-4000 Marshall fans versus 50 N Texas had.

3 to 4 won't touch it. And our D and running game is vastly improced since last year, and based on the first 2 games, I believe Ohio to be not as good a team as last year. Herd by 21.

Herd could pull it out, but not by 21. Not in Athens. We need to take the handcuffs off the offense and let em get wild.

I talked with my sales team "account rep" last week to order a couple more tickets to the game and learned that Marshall's sales are way below expectations. Apparently they were given 3,000 tickets but returned about 1,800 of them unsold. That's not to say that some Marshall fans won't be purchasing through Ohio...but it doesn't sound like a Herd invasion.

If that's the case, Marshall's turnout won't be nearly as impressive as 2 years ago.

What a shame...

I have some anecdotal evidence that would seem to point in the direction of a lower Herd turnout than two years ago.  We have friends in Huntington (both Ohio grads) who usually come to Athens with a bunch of Marshall fans and we have a pre-game party at our house.  When we go to Huntington to a game (not always just an Ohio game) we always go to the in-home tailgate that this group throws so we return the favor when they come here.  However, this year only the two Ohio grads are coming (and staying overnight with us), the rest of this herd is not coming to see their Herd.  That's like in zilch, nada, none of them.
