Cato is a very good QB.  Marshall has a lot of good individual talent.  They are not playing together as a team.  I think that will improve as the season progresses.  Good luck against VT next Saturday.   Go Marshall!

Shuler is a tough, sure-handed receiver.

Cato's short to intermediate passes are crisp and accurate.   His long throws were arced surprisingly high, giving Ohio defenders time to cover.  Cato showed remarkable poise as when he chased down the bad snap, righted  himself and completed a pass.

Your D line was stout against the run and able to pressure Tettleton.

Your running game seemed ordinary.

Here is what I posted on another thread, immediately after the game:
LC wrote:
Marshall has a good team, and it was a hard-fought game, but Marshall made too many mistakes. They will have a good year this year, and end up with a very good record. As for Ohio, they continue to improve, and they still have a lot to work on.

I think Ohio is better than you give them credit for. They did not play well against Louisville, for several reasons we don't need to get into, but Ohio has a lot of talent, they are well coached, motivated, and they play as a team. Because of injuries they are starting 6-8 Redshirt Sophomores a game right now, and those guys are improving each game. They played much better against Marshall than against NTSU, and much better against NTSU than against Louisville.  I don't think the Marshall team underestimated Ohio, but I think that Marshall fans do.

Marshall did a lot of things well. Their defense is dramatically improved from the last couple years ago, particularly against the run. Their offense is good, too, and did not give up when behind. I think if Ohio and Marshall played 10 times, they would all be close, hard fought games.

I thought it was a typical Battle for the Bell since the series resumed.  Close, hard fought and it really came down to who made the fewest mistakes -- not just TOs (Ohio forced the first two) but silly penalties and miscommunications.  I think Solich is more of a disciplinarian than Holliday, and it shows.  Cato's still a work in progress.  He has excellent skills but needs better decision-making.  And there's always next week.  VT will be tough but they barely got past ECU this week, so who knows.

If your running game gets better, and the line play gets more solid (there was some great plays), then look out. I think you will win C-USA East this year.

Here's what I think but I'm not sure if any Marshall fans want to hear it after taking a peak at their boards.

Marshall is a talented team, they have talented players. BUT, the talent gap, if there even is one, is not of the epic proportions Herd fans are trying to make it out to be. The consensus seems to be that the gap in talent between Marshall and Ohio is about the same as Alabama and Shawnee State. This is fantasy talk and a denial of reality. 7 starters from Week 1 did not play for Ohio last night. Our entire front 7 on D is new, our play maker DB, #37 Bass, is only on the field because 2 other DBs are out. We had 4 OL starters out. Ohio has talent and depth on par with Marshall, maybe greater.

I think many of the fans, and probably some of the players and coaches, think that Marshall has a huge talent advantage over Ohio. I've heard it spouted for the past 3 years. It's just not true. As long as Marshall continues to believe they are vastly more talented than Ohio they will continue to be disappointed.

I got giddy last night when I saw a Marshall player beating his chest and howling after making a play in the 1st quarter. Just like last year. Too much grandstanding and posturing and beliving your own press and thinking that there really is a large gap in talent and that it will be enough to win the game.

Marshall showed it has a lot of potential but really needs to work on humility and a realistic assessment of their abilities and their opponents' abilities.

Best of luck the rest of the season.

i don't mind intensity in a player, but i really was bothered by Cato's going after the coaches several times. it smacks of an undisciplined team. marshall has talent, but the better TEAM won last night in my opinion.

it still took 4 turnovers for the Cats to pull it out. OUr guys will continue to get better, and i believe the Herd will as well.

i can't say how good marshall is against the run, our o-line is still a work in progress. i was predicting the plays we were running and for most of the game i was about 80-% correct. If i can do it, someone who is paid to do it probably was 90% correct. if i know it's a belly play i think that is pretty easy to defend unless the o-line is far superior.

TT and the play calling seemed to improve in the second half. someone posted elsewhere that vick may have provided a much needed spark to the Cats. Kind of agree with that. I was surprised not to see him again, but TT was playing REALLY well in the second half.

cato can play and #1 is a stud.

every time the Cats needed a big play, someone stepped up. marshall is pretty good and i expect them to win 8-10 games this year.

Unlike many of the Marshall fans on their boards, I think Marshall will win 9 or 10 games, considering their schedule. They very well may beat VT next week. As many have said, Marshall is much improved defensively and running game wise. Frankly, I would not expect them to have another penalty-turnover debacle like last night. They do need to realize that the MAC and Ohio are not as lousy as they seem to think. I guess they need to keep telling themselves that they made the right choice in going to CUSA.

I basically agree with many of the posts on this thread.  Marshall is a good team and will be a force in CUSA this season.

I also agree that many Marshall fans are exaggerating the supposed "talent gap" between Marshall and Ohio.

Ohio is not a good matchup for the Herd and its going to continue to be a problem for Marshall in the series until Solich steps down.

I think....
  • Terd fans do their team no favors by living in the past;
  • Terd fans have convinced themselves that by virtue of a really good couple of seasons 2 decades ago and current internet recruiting rankings, they have the 11 best on the field, and that OHIO should just recognize that and roll over because Rivals says this game should not be close;
  • Terd fans do not understand that having the best 11 is more important than having the 11 best;
  • Please keep thinking like this, because Terd fans' tears are delicious.
I will speak no more of Terd, because it is Austin Peay week. Go Bobcats.

At what point are we going to stop calling them "Terd" & "Stupid Cow"?  I'm all for clever banter (like most of the look-alike thread), but this isn't it.

Most of my friends that are Marshall fans have a realistic assessment of their team, but their masses (and Chuck Landon) are delusional about what they really are.  Marshall is usually getting bullied by the even more-delusional Mountaineer fans in the state, so I think they desperately want to puff their chests out and Ohio is the only team they can come up with to pick on.

The only thing keeping Ohio from a 4-game winning streak right now is a blown non-call on the 2 pt. try in Huntington 4 games ago.  At this point, Ohio is the better team and the better program, but not by much.  Three in a row is not a fluke.  CUSA is a better conference than the MAC, but that doesn't automatically mean every team from CUSA is better than every team in the MAC.  You have to learn to seperate the two.

No matter what is mumbled by two guys in the bathroom about this rivalry having no positives for Marshall, this is a great rivalry right now.  The two teams are very closely matched.  Except for 2011, the games have been tight and very entertaining.  Almost every game has not been decided until the last minute.  It is usually the largest crowd of the season for each school that hosts.  Most of the fans treat it as a friendly rivalry, which makes the entire day a lot of fun.

Marshall has some really talented players.  Shuler is tough and will continue to shine now that Dobson is playing on Sundays.  Cato is good, but not great.  His deep ball was underthrown nearly every time.  The defense is improved from last year, but still just average.  Same for the running game.  I think Marshall will have a good season and probably win at least 8 games.  I hope they win more.  They'd probably win 9-10 if they were in the MAC, which is about what I expect from OU this year.

In a nutshell, I look forward to this game every year, no matter where it is played.  I just wish I could buy Marshall for what they're worth and sell them for what their fans think they're worth.

Is it? It used to be, but right now I'm not sure. CUSA lost four teams (Houston, UCF, SMU, Memphis) to the AAU, and replaced them with four from the Sunbelt (MTSU, NTSU, FAU, FIU) and two from the WAC (La Tech, UTSA). Most of the teams they lost have solid football traditions, whereas of the teams they added, only NTSU and La Tech have much of a football history, and most of the other teams they added are more known for Bottom Ten appearances. Meanwhile the MAC is improving across the board. I don't think at this point one can say one conference is better than the other.

It was rated significantly higher in just about every computer system that you could find last year as well even before the exodus.  The Sunbelt, MAC, and CUSA are all pretty awful by FCS standards and there isn't much difference between them.  CUSA was rated worst in the country last year and if I had to bet I'd expect it will remain so for a few more years.  We'll have to see how UMass and the schools that recently moved up in the Sunbelt and CUSA do after they get FBS scholarship depth.  But it would not shock me either if the MAC or Sunbelt wrestled the "worst in league in the country" title away from them at any time.

But the rest of those are really clever.  The two most commonly used for Marshall are very weak and are not really very funny.  Back in the day, when Marshall had really horrid teams, people used to call them the Blundering Herd.  In fact, that got under their skin so much that for a period of time, they changed the official nickname from Thundering Herd to "Big Green."  Speaking of lame!

not really, the MAC. Is very close to CUSA in Sagarins because of the bottom feeders, not really anything to shout about so far for the MAC, as opposed to prior years

When was the last time a CUSA team busted the BCS?

On the whole in recent years CUSA has been better than the MAC, mostly because the bottom of the MAC (U.Mass, EMU, Akron) was very bad, and because several CUSA teams (UCF, Tulsa, SMU, Houston) have been very good. Most of the traditional powers of the CUSA have moved to the AAU, though, replaced by much weaker teams. On paper, I think CUSA is currently weaker than the MAC. If CUSA teams continue to put more money into Athletics than MAC teams, that may not remain true.
