Chuck Landon grades The Herd ... Ohio 34, Marshall 31

September 15, 2013 @ 12:44 AM

Chuck Landon grades The Herd ... Ohio 34, Marshall 31

OFFENSE: D -- Three crucial turnovers negated any positives.

DEFENSE: D -- The porous pass coverage allowed Ohio to convert 11 of 19 third-down situations.

SPECIAL TEAMS: F -- It turned a kickoff return into an Ohio TD, allowed a 48-yard punt return and booted an onside kick out of bounds.

COACHING: D -- It didn’t get the job done in any of the three phases.

OVERALL: F -- Losing to Ohio for three consecutive seasons is absolutely unacceptable.

Against my better judgement I actually purchased an Herald Dispatch this morning.  I cant seem to find the link online or I would have posted it but I am sure Bobcat fans are going to love his column.  Here is a quote from that "column".

"The ramifications of this terrible loss.  And make no mistake , it was terrible.  That's because it was an embarrassment.  Marshall shouldn't be losing to the likes of Ohio very often.  But losing to the Bobcats three straight seasons?  That is simply unacceptable.  Ohio isn't on Marshall's par in talent, facilities or resources.  So, why should the Herd ever lose to the Bobcats other than an occasional upset?  Everyone knows the answer to that questions.  Marshall shouldn't.  Yet the Herd has succumbed for a humiliating third consecutive season.  Three losses in a row for the first time since 1973-74-75.  There is no joy in Huntington.  Marshall has dashed the citiy's hopes again."

Chuck is an embarrassment to journalism.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the 2 universities in terms if budget, athletics budget, endowments, etc. Chuck is mistaking having a stadium that seats more as having more resources.

Do we have a volunteer? 😊

The whole "marshall should never lose to ohio except for an occasional upset" part is hilarious and infuriating.  this should've been the 5th consecutive win over marshall if not for bad breaks in 09 and 10.  ohio is a better team. period.  coaching, talent, everything.  i would say that marshall has a shot next year in huntington but vick looked great during the possession that he played last night so i'm not really worried about it.  last night was a huge win for the cats. love it.

Agreed.  Four of the last five meetings have been decided by less than five points.  It's a sign that the programs are pretty even overall -- not like when Terd had Moss, Pendleton and Leftwich and we had Knorr. He's too small-minded to acknowledge that times have changed and Ohio now regularly has NFL-quality players.

In all honesty, Ohio shouldn't be playing the likes of Marshall. Why do we need to associate with a school that is pretty much Hocking Tech South? I hate our university's pandering to the bloodroot and moss gathering crowd. Is it really worth the few extra dollars to have a throng of the unwashed sully our campus every couple years? Is the self-hatred of some of our fanbase so strong that they need this game to exorcise the demons grandpappy learned them about?

Country roads, please take this "rivalry" back home to the hollows of West Virginia and dispose of it in some forsaken kin grave site...

Part of me will agree with Chuck.  When you look at the matchup on paper, it seems to go to the Herd.  Better facilities, bigger budget, seemingly better talent from a rating standpoint, better conference.  The problem is that this hasn't materialized on the field for Marshall.  My guess is that it comes down to coaching and leadership.  OU seems to be run like a well oiled machine, while the bigger machine(Marshall) is not quite running to full capacity.  Either way, I'm happy with the outcome.

His column is exactly the problem many Herd fans have--a superiority complex, and I think that's what get's Ohio going more than anything else. That's a big reason why Ohio is 3-0 over the past three years. Marshall team/players/fans seem to think they're far superior and even playing the Bobcats is beneath them, never mind losing.

So far that attitude may have single-handedly cost them three games. Maybe we should hope they keep it up.

More and more my good friend R Fox and I agree these days.  He is spot on here.

I've seen one--O N E--stupd cow post on this game since we won yesterday.  You'd think the braggart arses would come on here and congratulate us, however ruefully.  But no.  Their view is that just gave it away to a team that they are vastly superior to.

Sure, 0-3 is proof positive that they are much better than us.

Funny thing is, I think most of we 'Cats, even despite three in a row, would view the teams as fairly even.

Based on his comments that 3 losses in a row is not acceptable, it apparently isn't, at least, as not a place to stop. The question then becomes how many in a row will they have to lose before they begin to respect Ohio?

This arrogance seems to be based on the golden years of the mid 1990s when they dominated us...but were found (once again) by the NCAA to be running a dirty program.  Not a coincidence that they haven't been as "dominate" (as their fans often spell it) since.

So so so so so much truth in everything here. Hype, "talent advantage," facilities.........whatever. At the end of the day.....

IS THIS NOT THE WINNING TEAM????????????????????

Perhaps outside of their stadium (which is certainly in the top tier of non-BCS stadiums)...I don't see much of a facility advantage. Especially once the IPF is finished.

IMO, though, Marshall's stadium is way too big. They'd be better served with something in the 25-30K range. The only time's it's been filled (or close) is when they host WVU or another BCS school. I think Marshall shows us the danger of expanding Peden too aggressively.

I agree totally. Our fans do not even stay to the end as an example yesterday. With Coach Solich we can fill the stadium for a half. Without - who knows what's to come. I was at OHIO in the 80's and Pedan  was never at capacity . The question is: Will we continue success after football re-alianment (which is happening), with a new President of the University, and with a new coach (Solich can't do this forever). We are a college in a small town. The Convo needs to be preserved as well. Decisions must be made, but maybe not immediately

Or, Rob, perhaps it is an inferiority complex, and all the blather is merely an effort to compensate.

It's word for word directly from his column in The Sunday Herald Dispatch.
