from Frank. The man is NOT going to win a MAC championship at Ohio. The tenacity and focus just isn't there for easy conference home games every single season. This isn't an aberration game. This is the norm for Frank. Go find somebody that can motivate the team every single week. Frank isn't that guy, at least not anymore. Putrid.

We should give some credit to Central Michigan. They came ready to play. The Bobcats simply didn't get it done on the field, where it counts. It is that simple. Frank has done a great job at Ohio. We are consistently relevant, which was not the case for those of us old enough to remember the lean years at Ohio. For those of us who are too young to remember, we were consistently one of the worst programs in the country back then. You think being a fan was difficult today, it was truly miserable then.

That makes sense. We are clearly at a different level now thanks to Frank. The problem in my mind is that it doesn't feel like we are making progress as a program these days. We made it to MACC a couple times in the last 5 years and we choked... Now it seems doubtful we'll be going back there again this season. And why? Because we lost to an inferior (talent wise) CMU team on Homecoming after a 40 point conference road win. If we had gone up to Bowling Green and got whipped by a better team that would have been one thing, but this is a pretty significant letdown. Again.

This is life with Frank.  He is a good enough coach to win you a lot of games, but a bad enough coach to lose more than a few that he shouldn't.  It's what he has always been as a head coach.  If you are happy with not sucking, he's your man. But if you want championships, you need someone else.  There is a reason he's pushing 70 and coaching in the MAC.

My biggest disappointment after 9 years with this staff is they have not been able to get the talent to Athens to separate us from the rest of the pack.  I guess that is just MAC football this century.  Only NIU has really separated themselves and that thru various staffs.  The rest of us are pretty much on equal footing except for a few sisters of the poor.  At least we aren't in that group.  I still can't believe this staff with its stability can only get average MAC talent.  I'm sure they try but it just hasn't happened.

For those of you that don't believe in stars or who liked the Bear Bryant speech to the frosh I can only say give me 10 3 star guys every year and coach them up.  Or, instead of getting grade 75 players who have 1-2 games a year more like 65 players give me a bunch of 85s that play that way.  Then we'd have a MAC championship.  I was in Athens in 1968 and I have a feeling I'll never see a MAC Champ again.  I think this is as good as it gets.  On the positive side, we are a hell of a lot better than we were the 25 or 30 years before this staff arrived.  I guess I just thought we'd be a dominant Marshall or Miami type team.  Guess it aint gonna happen...

People saying we should move on from Frank must only have half a brain. This game was not lost because of his coaching. We had significant line injuries, Tettleton, while overall good, made some costly mistakes, although the one endzone int was an amazing play on the DB's part. Then Travis Carrie's muffed punt was the tipping point. Not coaching that caused that. Just the bad luck that two great players would make significant mistakes in one game. We get rid of Solich and it goes two ways. Both start the same. We get some young hotshot coach to come in and either a) he does really well, bringing us to 10 win seasons for 2-3 years, maybe about a 10% of also getting a MAC championship game win, then he leaves as soon as the first power five offer comes his way. b) we get PJ Fleck Jr and are back back to 4-8 being good for us. Solich changed this program, and the recruiting keeps getting better. This man coached a team to the national championship game, and it's clear from his record at Ohio that he is not washed up like Terry Bowden. Saying we should move on from Solich is just plain moronic and thoughtless. You guys sound like state fans who called for Tressel's job during a 10-2 season

It's as if some of you guy's object to Beau up the middle.

Was it our first drive of the second half?  Beau wide for a few.  Beau up the middle for some, leaving us 3rd and about three.  What's the call on third down.  Beau up the middle for a loss of a yard or two.

That was some good football.

For a junior high school team.

Would any other team--any other--have called that third down play given who we are this year and how that play wasn't working today?

Anyone wanting to ditch this coaching staff or throw this team under the bus, has a very, very short memory. In the 80's and 90's Homecoming was like at Akron last week. NO fans in the seats, NO excitement, NO Nothing!. You want to go back to that? Please believe me, it is possible. Give some credit to President to Dr. McDavis. He committed to the football program and paid a known winner to coach and recruit for this team. We had a horrible reputation for the most part b4 Solich so don't criticize something you don't know. Learn from your history.

Do you think this is why Nebraska fired him? Winning 9 is not enough in the big time. Those let downs had to get old.

good point, I looked all around college football and I couldn't find a single solitary instance where a team that was supposed to win got beat by a lesser opponent. Not a single one. The Ohio Bobcats are the ONLY team in college football that loses games they should win, and this is an inexcusable injustice that SHALL. NOT. STAND. I'm with you brother. And unicorns are real.

I love Solich and think he has done a great job. The program is continuing to grow as evidence by continued success on the field, fans in the stands and the construction of the new IPF. However, I am sick of the play calling. It is so predictable. I love Beau but his number is being called way to often. Plus it is no secret that Ohio's O line is dealing with injuries so running up the gut just is not going to get it done.

Ohio vs CMU.  The two teams from the MAC that won bowls last year.

According to plan
Ohio two more first downs.
Ohio QB with 300+ passing yards
Ohio two receivers with 100+ receiving yards
Ohio 36 passing plays, 34 rushing plays

Not according to plan
2 fumbles
2 interceptions
CMU averages 4.7 per rush vs MAC's best rushing defense
Ohio averages 3.1 per run

CMU won the game the old fashioned way.  Run the ball, stop the run, win the game.  they earned it.  Credit to CMU.

Voting for moving on.

Casper, the only place I disagree with you is over the importance of the stars themselves. It isn't like there are 2 stars and 3 stars except on paper. There are really 2.65 stars and 2.93 stars, etc. What I think people miss is the point you make here - that there isn't a lot of difference in talent levels between top MAC programs, and yes, CMU is one of the top MAC programs.

Ohio was talent wise, clearly better than Akron, who was left in truly sorry shape by their former coach, but CMU, not true. The Seniors on this CMU team were recruited at a time when CMU was the team to beat, with back to back MAC championships. Should Ohio still have won? Absolutely. It took every bit of 4 turnovers to cause them to lose this one. Can they still win the MAC? Yes, they still control their own destiny.

As for recruiting, i do think they are starting to get the talent to separate from the rest of the MAC. It's taken longer than I expected, too, but the last two years, for the first time, Ohio is getting their first choices to commit to Ohio. The last 2-3 recruiting classes are significant improvements over those before them. Those guys are only Freshmen and Sophomores, today.  I think 2 years from now Ohio may well start looking Marshall or Miami-like in the MAC.

LC, I can agree with you too.  I think the skill positions are seeing better players.  But as someone said, CMU won this the old fashioned way...their bigs just beat on us both offensively and defensively.  They OWNED the line of scrimmage.  For all the talk of us being bigger and stronger and having depth, we were NOT as good as them up front and that really contributed to the loss.
