I really wanted him to finish out the season. Watching Miami fans react to their teams has been so much fun.

"Sayler also announced an interim head coach would be named in the near future."  Better be in the damn near future; they play at UMass this week.  Maybe none of the coaching staff wants the job.  Didn't bother to wish him well in his future endeavors.

For those who haven't read Ted's link yet, OC John Klacik is out too. AD Sayler hasn't been in the job long, so I can understand wanting to hire your own guys, but I never got the point of firing someone in season (at least in college football)

One doesn't necessarily need a coach to beat UMass

Because Treadwell and Klacik were that bad.

I wonder if it's a case of Sayler wanting to get rid of the OC and Treadwell wouldn't do it.  Seems to me that if they were ready to fire their head coach, they would have had a replacement lined up.

The Zook possibility is actually a bit frightening. He's never getting another big job, so he would have 20 years to build a program. He's still relatively young and can outrecruit anyone in the state not named Urban. But it would be a great hire for the MAC. But Arkley and Rob on Twitter have pointed out that Miami is doing athletics on a shoestring budget, so Zooker would have to take an alumni hometown discount salary.

It's not just a name that gets a player on a campus. It's facilities. It's gameday campus visits. It's culture. And not culture all-time-winningest-15-MAC-titles-cradle-of-coaches-old-farts-remembering-the-good-old-days. Culture NOW.

And right now, Miami is a Dorothea Lange picture.

Hard to believe they made this move in the middle of the season.

There's an interesting question: Where does the Miami job rank in the MAC pecking order now? I'd say sixth or seventh best job. NIU, Toledo, BG, Ohio, Ball State, Akron are probably better jobs at this point. Western is probably a toss-up.

Both Treadwell and Klasic were part of the Tressel staff at Youngstown State. They came up through the ranks and have good pedigrees but not all good coaches are good head coaches.
They will find work on another staff. I think both have been coordinators at other schools.
This sets the Miami program back another 2-3 years.

I just remembered that Mark Mangino is now the assistant head coach at YSU. His won/lost record is amazing and of course most of the Kansas modern era glory was during his reign. He would definitely be available on short notice.
Not sure if Miami would look at him because of his prior issues with player treatment ala another Youngstowner, Mike Rice (Rutgers BB).

Makes perfect sense. But it reminds me of a Charlie interview.

I wish I could remember the specifics of either the interview or article, but part of it was around Charlie Coles' recruiting. And I'm probably missing lots of it, but they did their best on recruits during home visits, building relationships with parents, etc, basically everything except having them see games & Millet Hall. And I think there was mention of a fair amount of his team that committed without seeing Miami in action at home. For that empty 'arena' it makes perfect sense. But to me never made sense for a commit to not see what they're getting into. Just thought that was really interesting and smart for them.

But also to Pete's point that it is not just a name that does the job - look at Akron. (Even know they do have the facilities.)

When you think about it, they're really not out much money be firing mid-season. They're not going to pay the interim guys much more than theyre paying now and they that don't have to feed or house the fired guys on the road. Seriously, they may get some more curious people to the stadium to see how the new guy does. It can't be any worse there.

And they get a head start on finding a new coach.

But I think Treadwell has years left on his contract, so they may be paying him a decent amount to take a hike.

Reports have the buyout in the $900K range. Money Miami doesn't really have.

Mike Bath is the interim. Which makes me feel even older. So Muck Fiami.

again, it doesn't make any difference if now or end of season, they still have a buyout.
