I found this video of the 1968 team that Russ made.  You can see that Cleve was a threat to run, or to throw, and could throw both long or short. You can also see another key to a successful team - a strong defensive front line.

I will ask this to the old-timers, who was better? Chuck Ealey or Cleve Bryant?  It's obvious who had more success.

Ironically, that film was from the only loss of the season, 49-42 to Richmond in the Tangerine Bowl.  I can faintly remember watching that as a little kid.

As a QB and a football player the answer would be Cleve.  As a decent human being the answer would be Chuck Ealey, who also had a nice pro career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL.  But in college there was no one who could throw the ball like Cleve.  Years ago I had the opportunity to interview Woody Hayes after he and Bill Hess had gone to Vietnam to show the troops films of their respective teams.  Woody heaped great praise on Cleve and said he had never seen a QB who could throw with equal ability running to his right or his left and who could switch directions as quickly as Cleve.  Cleve frequently would be on a dead run in one direction, stop and immediately throw the ball in the opposite direction (usually to Todd Snyder).  I think that this was what Woody was referring to.
