Only problem with this article, is the focus goes beyond OSU fans, and makes comments that all OHIO people meet those backwoods views.

How long until we see them on message boards lobbying for why they should be #1?

Two things:

First, the guy's an idiot.  He assumes that A&M is the only school that Ohioans care about, even though there are seven other D1A football schools in the state.  He should also look at the Toledo Blade, which gives nearly as much coverage to Ann Arbor Abnormal as it gives to A&M.

Second, he's dead wrong about Ohio, the state.  I chose to come back here, make a home and raise my family.  Best place in the world for it.

"Clay Travis" must be a pen name.  His real name is Richard Head.

Edit:  Oh, I just realized he's with Fox.  That explains it.

You know what. let them, they are in the midst of a remarkable run!  If we were in the midst of a 20 game winning streak, we'd be clamoring to be as highly rated as we could be, and even higher than what we realisticly should be.  Those young men are just like our young men, they work hard to achieve a common goal, and can only control certain factors.

I think he was making a joke about them petitioning for #1 in a poll where #1 is the least desirable position.

I thought the USA TODAY article was a little more credible...ranking O$U the 3rd most insufferable fan base.  However, that person must have been from South because he hated on Penn State, OSU, Notre Dame and loves Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M, LSU and Alabama.

You're right, he is an idiot. But he's using hyperbole to make a point that is actually true, and that is that MOST of the state of Ohio is unfortunately inflicted with scarlet (and gray) fever.

I love Ohio. I will be an Ohioan until the day that I die. I am loud and proud about it at work and with friends. BUT, I hate that for several months a year during football season half the people in the state become insufferable, especially if you don't like their precious buckeyes.

Or maybe he's from the Great Lakes region and is just sick of hearing about the Legends, the Leaders and the Golden Dome.  I know I am most of the time.

Edit: According to LinkedIn, he went to George Mason.

This. We all hear it from our friends or family who are Buckeye fans. "Well you were born in the state of Ohio, so that means you have to be an Ohio State fan." Umm no.

Ohio just has this unique quality where mostly everyone roots for the major program in the state, even though there is more than one program in the entire state. The only fan bases that compare on a support level, are the states with singular teams in the entire state (ex. Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin). If you think about it, most other states have multiple major programs (ex. Alabama, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, California) and the fan bases are split. The only other state I can think of like Ohio is probably Texas. People love the Longhorns. What's even crazier about Texas is that most of the programs are BCS level.

A few observations:

Ohio State fans don't need a 20-game winning streak to be obnoxious.

This has probably happened to most of you. I'll be wearing my Bobcats gear and someone will say, "You're rooting for the wrong Ohio." or "Ohio U. How long have they had a team?" So in the minds of Ohio State fans (granted, very small minds) rooting for another in-state school isn't enough.  You have to root for their school.

There was a kid in our hometown named Richard Head. This was in the 70s. Years later my wife discovers she's working in the same company with Richard Head's niece.

I wear Ohio apparel everywhere and have never experienced a putdown.  To the contrary, my Ohio gear has made me the recipient of numerous encomiums.  Of course,  I don't spend much time in Columbus - where my daughter lives.  She is visiting us here in North Canton and I just asked her if she has ever heard a disparaging comment.  "Nope" was her reply.

I tend to agree - I get more "Go Bobcats" than anything. I more and more feel like I'm "Was an OHIO/Bobcats fan before being an OHIO/Bobcats fan was cool". I see an increasing amount of OHIO/Bobcats gear, car decals, etc. all around cowtown these days...........

Agree with others, nothing but positive and supportive experiences wearing my Bobcat Gear. Most ar casual fans and even comment about some of our better games.

I know what you're saying here, but the unfortunate truth is that if all other 7 teams played at home on the same weekend, their total actual attendence wouldn't equal what The evil empire averages at home. Sad but true. (And I mean actual attendence)

In the MAC, actual attendance and reported can widely differ. For example, while I was a EMU, I talked to one of the security guards for awhile, and complimented him on their stadium, which probably seats 35,000, and the parking - you can drive right up to the stadium and park. Now, keep in mind that to remain FBS, EMU must show average attendance of 15,000. The guard mentioned that they had 8,000 show up for a rock concert not too long ago, and it was a mess as there wasn't enough parking. He said if they ever had 8,000 show up for a football game, it would probably be a parking disaster. (...but apparently that hasn't ever happened).

I do remember back in about the 1980s -- or whenever it was that EMU last had a good football team -- there was a late season game televised from there and it appeared they had a very good crowd in the stadium.  But that was many years ago in a galaxy far away and has no bearing their current dismal situation.  As I recall, EMU actually went to a bowl game the year that I'm referring to.

I too have received nothing but compliments wearing Ohio gear.  I was in Dallas for a business convention two months ago, was walking to the fitness center at the convention hotel wearing an Ohio Bobcats t-shirt when out of nowhere someone yelled "go Bobcats!"  It was pretty cool.

Monroe, I know that at my age I hallucinate a lot and my memory can be questioned, but this is off the EMU football wikipedia web site (probably the smallest web site of this type I've ever seen, as there is not much to report on):

"In 1987, following the school's only MAC championship, and the first in any conference in 30 years, the team went on to upset 17½ point favorite San Jose State University in the 1987 California Bowl in FresnoCalifornia, for the only bowl game win in school history.[55]"

I get comments on Ohio garb all the time, all over the place. I met a guy from Zanesville who'd done classes at the branch in Hartford the other day at a street festival. Started conversations across the country for me -- only one place have I had a negative remark... Oxford, on gameday.
