I meant to post this after the CMU game so it seems out of place, but as I sat there in misery a couple weeks ago I felt like I get this feeling once annually.  Also known as the crapping of the bed, it seems Ohio has fallen to the bad loss each season.

2013 - Home loss to CMU (2-2).  Ramifications TBD.
2012 - Road loss at Miami (2-6).  Lost top 25 ranking and spiraled out of control to 4-4 finish.
2011 - Roas loss at Buffalo (2-6) or home loss vs Ball St (4-4).  Still won MAC East though.
2010 - Road loss at Kent (4-4).  Ruined MAC East title...AND gave it to Miami.
2009 - Home loss to Kent (4-4).  Still won MAC East though.
2008 - Bad Year.
2007 - Home loss to Kent (1-7).  Cost us bowl bid.
2006 - Home loss to BG (3-5).  Still won MAC East though.

You could probably do this excercise with most programs, and it also is a great depiction of what a great 8 run we have had being in contention most years, especially when considering the not so great history of the program.  But boy, it is tough not to think about what could have been if we flipped these results in the games we had no business losing.

All of these losses were tough on me....but the ones that really stick out are last years loss @ Miami and the 2010 loss at Kent. The Miami one stung because of the the hype and ranking that was building behind the team. It was a lot of fun getting the national recognition and then Miami of all teams is the one that got to stomp the fire out. The Kent loss was a bitterly cold windy day and all we needed to do was beat an extremely down Kent team in front of about 500 fans to clinch the East. We lost and Miami took the ball from us to a MAC championship.

In the interests of looking on the bright side here, it's a d%$# good thing that you ceased the trip down memory lane at 2006.  Does 44-0 ring a bell?  That still makes the hair on my neck stand up.

What about 2010 at Marshall?

Go for 2 instead of OT?

I'm just about 100% sure the double secret coaches handbook on going for 2 did not say go for two in that situation. but who knows it might cause I'm not a coach and have never seen the book.

Frank let me peak at the book once and it does say to go for two in OT if you are playing in the state of Texas!

I remember his post-game comments on this one. He said something to the effect of "We were on the road and I felt like we had the momentum at that moment. Rather than duke it out in overtime, I thought we had a better chance going for the win then and there".

It didn't work, but even with the benefit of hindsight I can't fault the decision.

I agreed with Frank on that quote and have no problem with the decision to go for it. He also did it in overtime at North Texas and it worked out there and we won the game. You win some and you lose some.

On the bright side those losses in 2010 and 2012 actually got us better bowls (New Orleans and Independence) than if we would have been in an official MAC tie-in bowl.

I know a MAC championship is always the goal, but to me the real goal is undefeated and a shot at a BCS bowl.  Once we lost to Louisville that was out of the question, so personally I'd rather lose a couple here and there and be remain bowl eligible with a good record (9-3-ish), and NOT qualify for a MAC bowl.

Just a different perspective.

You know, Maryland Bobcat, in a strange way I understand what you are saying.  Though I really want us to win the MACC, and I was devastated by the NIU loss a few years ago, the consolation prize of not even being in the MACC is that you usually get a better bowl.  This may change next year, though, with all of the new bowls and the demise of the Pizza Bowl.

I was focusing on just depressing losses to bad teams in otherwise competitve years (hence stopping at 2006).  The loss at Marshall would not qualify in my book.  I wish I could look up the lines on these games, but I gotta believe we were favored by at least 7 in all these games and some by 20ish.

Yeah, the end of the Pizza Bowl could be the best thing to happen to this conference.  Call me traditional, but I think a bowl game should be a reward, and in an interesting location that embraces the game.  No offense to Detroit as I think it's the perfect home for the MACC, but a repeat trip to place inside in a mammoth dome in December is no prize.  The exception to this is the GMAC Bowl.  I went in '06 and I have to say it was a great experience.  Parades, parties, etc.  The town really embraced the game.
