Field position philosophy only goes so far.  SHOW SOME COJONES!!!!!!!!!!!!  Go for it.  Try a FG.  But it is DAMNED EMBARRASSING to punt from inside their 35.  Yaz already hit from 49 with plenty of room to spare.  What happened to Venham is irrelevant.  GO FOR IT, DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I've calmed down, I just want say

FRANK, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING????  LET'S AT LEAST TRY TO PUT POINTS ON THE BOARD INSTEAD OF MAYBE PINNING THEM DEEP BUT MORE LIKELY GETTING ONLY ABOUT 15 YDS OF FIELD POSITION.  C'MON, MAN.

Its hard for me to believe that you cannot go to some of the kicking camps and find one really good punter every four years.  When is the last time we actually scouted and RECRUITED a punter and signed him to a LOI?  This is not a position you can just have a bunch of guys walk in and try out for anymore.

Ah, the good ol' days when Dave Zastudil was our MVP.  He took 25% of our snaps and accounted for 90% of our yards.

Yes, let's throw all our chips in on a 5* punter next recruiting cycle.

Uh Pessimist...I'd take one 5 star recruited punter every three or four years.  When you think about how many times punting has hurt us over the last 9 years, I'd say it is a good investment.  And, seriously...I AM TALKING ONE SCHOLARSHIP.

That would be this guy, a high 3 star rated player (80 is 4 stars), who was rated as the #10 Punter in the country.

Square peg, round hole, maybe? As has been well documented following every blocked punt the past 2 years, our punt protection requires a 2 step kick, and Venham's natural tendency is a 3 step motion. Yet again, an example of not changing up our scheme to fit the players we have. Beau up the middle.

I won't argue with you here but I did just read the link to ESPN that says he is a "special project".  And, he wasn't one of the 24 recruited athletes in the class of 2011 according to the same site or Scout.  (Name is not even listed in Scout).  I wonder if anyone else recruited him?  I'll stand by my comment that you don't just go out and look for a foot nowadays , You better get someone who can kick for you (and a scheme that can block for him).

And, yes, the facts speak for themselves.  His punting avg is 38.1 yds vs 42,0 for opponents.

He was an early offer and acceptance, actually, but was a grey-shirt because Paul Hershey had another year left. That's why he doesn't show on any of the recruiting lists. As I understand it, a grey shirt doesn't enroll until winter, so he technically counts against the following year's class. Since they are sort of "between" classes, they tend to get lost by the recruiting services.

I also agree that he hasn't worked out as well as hoped, in two respects. First, the transition from a 3-step to a 2-step kick has been hard for him. Second, he was an athlete in high school, so I was hoping he would, like Hershey, be able to take off and run sometimes for a free first down.

He's still got 2 years left, and I still hope that we'll see him booming kicks regularly next year and the year after.

You do not 3 step punt in college football. Punting is timing, you only have a certain window for time and distance with your approach.

Yes - switching to 2 steps was not an option - he had to switch. I presume that's why he didn't have 15 offers.Every game, though, the 2-step kicks should be more natural to him, so he should kick to his potential.

No, you can't do a 3 step punt in college, especially when your protection scheme is designed to let rushers through so you can get up the field faster to make a tackle. Yet we have a punter who defaults to a 3 step motion and a Special Teams Coordinator who has shown zero ability to actually coach special teams.

I'm saying try something new. What about a rugby style? We used to do that with Hershey, and it was effective because of his athleticism and ability to scramble if the defense didn't respect his running ability. Venham was supposed to be an athlete too, yet we don't give him the opportunity to use that ability, and opposing teams have no reason to respect it.

Fiami's best (only?) weapon is their punter. Not only does he get a lot of work, but he also is 3rd in D1A in punting.  One reason, I think, is that they protect him well.  Everybody stays tight; they don't have gunners out wide.  But he gives them enough hang time that they cover pretty well, too.

And I did notice that Toledo punted from inside NIU's 35 last night.  I think they wanted as much field between Lynch and TD as possible.  And they got great field position, pinning NIU inside the one.  Of course, NIU drove 99 yds for a TD, so that worked well.

Les Miles and LSU go for it on 4th at about the 35.  Don't make it but didn't lose much field position:)  Then, ya gotta love running from the power I once in a while.  Nice fullback lead on a number of playes.  Still can't understand why we don't have some wrinkles with the I...
