What's the difference between stating he resigned rather than retired. Is there a difference? Does he not have enough years with the school to technically retire? It just sounds so much better to say you're retiring rather than resigning, but maybe there's something I'm missing.

My personal take is, you retire from coaching altogether.  You resign from your current job.

77-82 makes Grobe one of the greatest coaches in WF history. Only 3 teams in FBS have a worse all time winning % than Wake. Boy did they hit the jackpot when they joined the ACC in 1953.

Winningest coaches in Wake Forest History (30 games min):
          Coach Name                W      L     T      PCT
1937-50   D.C. Peahead Walker      77     51     6     .597
1929-32   F.S. Miller              18     15     4     .541
2001-13   Jim Grobe                77     82           .484
1969-71   Cal Stolle               15     17           .469
1951-55   Tom Rogers               21     25     4     .460
1987-92   Bill Dooley              29     36     2     .448
1978-80   John Mackovic            14     20           .412
1981-86   Al Groh                  26     40           .394
1964-68   Bill Tate                17     32     1     .350
1956-59   Paul Amen                11     26     3     .313
1933-36   James H. Weaver          10     23     1     .309
1993-00   Jim Caldwell             26     63           .292
1973-77   Chuck Mills              11     43     1     .209
1960-63   Billy Hildebrand          7     33           .175

Note that there are some coaching names on there you might recognize from other places:
Mackovic was 30-16-1 at Illinois, 41-28-2 at Texas, and 10-18 at Arizona.
Groh was 59-54 at UVA and 9-7 with the New York Jets.
Dooley was 69-53-2 with UNC and 63-38-1 with Virginia Tech
Chuck Mills was 38-23-1 with Utah State
Jim Caldwell was 26-22 with the Indianapolis Colts.
Cal Stolle was 39-39 with Minnesota

Note that all of these coaches had better winning percentages at places other than Wake Forest. Even for Grobe that is true. It is not easy to win at Wake Forest, and he should be proud of his record there. I suspect that some seriously deluded Wake Forest boosters were pressuring for his resignation. If so, welcome, Wake Forest, to the grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side school of Coaching selection.

To understand Coach Grobe, it helps to understand his youth and the Ohio football program prior to his arrival.

Coach Grobe grew up in Huntington and his father who was a police officer who died while he was in high school.  Dr. Ray Hagley who was the Marshall team physician became a mentor for Grobe who referred to him as "Uncle Ray".  Dr. Hagley was then killed in the Marshall plane crash.

Here at Ohio, we won 17 games the previous 10 years before Grobe was hired.  We did well to draw 5,000 a game and the facilities including the weight room were among the worst in Division 1.  By the time he left we had several winning seasons, along with beating Maryland and Minnesota and  near upsets of Kansas State and NC State on the road.  In addition, our graduation rate for the football team improved.

I am sure you will always find a player here or there who did not care for a coach and I am sure there are some who did not care for Grobe.  I met the Coach twice very briefly at the OU Inn following games and was shocked when I shook hands with him years later at the Ohio-UVA basketball game and he addressed me by my name before I could say anything.  A couple of days later he accepted the Wake job.

We lost several games we should have won while he was at Ohio and I watched us get pounded at Marshall while Moss and Pennington were there.  With that said, he laid a foundation (despite the Knorr years) that put us in a position to get Frank Solich.

I found Coach Grobe very refreshing and that is why I followed Wake Forest football as much as I did.

Great guy, solid coach. He took back-to-back jobs at places that were really tough to win. I had many conversations with him when he was at Ohio and I think he is one of the greatest motivators I have ever met. Jim Grobe is a class act. My guess is that they will wish him well in his future endeavors, yet really mean it.

He'll only be 62 in February, so unless he's going the early retirement route, he's got some years ahead, whether as a coach, consultant, or commentator, or he could take some other routes, like administration, or even politics.

Coach Grobe will have no problem doing what he enjoys, spending time with his wife Holly, sons, and playing golf, lots of golf!

Sorry to hear this.  I think Coach Grobe is a good coach and a even better human being.

Coach greeted students at Shively Hall during his first year. Most students didn't know or care about football. But I really respected him for doing that. I later spent a lot of time with him and he truly is a class act and great man. I read some of the message board posts from Wake today and they all echo the sentiments expressed here.

I agree with these sentiments. Also, there are a lot of Wake assistants with Ohio ties...Knorr, Lobo, Mitchell, etc...not to mention Brenda and Ethan Reeves...probably without work at Wake. Some like Mitchell may retire from coaching, but I wish all of them well. Even Coach Knorr. (Therapy pays off, haha)

Too late for that, but maybe WF will give him his second chance.

Most of the Wake posters are hoping for Lembo of Ball State who was at Elon prior to BSU.  UVA fans have been talking about Lembo ever since they soundly beat UVA.

I doubt Knorr will be considered for the Wake job.

The real unfortunate casualty of many coaching changes is the children of the assistants who are normally growing up in Elementary School.  Dad loses his job and you lose your friends when you move.

It affects the assistant coaches and their families, too. Ohio has been able to retain assistant coaches precisely because it does have some job stability, and so was Wake Forest. Of the 125 FBS schools, the median hire date for their coaches is, believe it or not, 2012:

Schools with no coach or hired effective 2014 - 5
Hired 2013 - 33
Hired 2012 - 24
Hired 2011 - 16
Hired 2010 - 10
Hired 2009 - 6
Hired 2008 - 6
Hired 2007 - 5
Hired 2006 - 6
The Top 13:
                                                 Record at School   School
Coach             School          Yr Hired      W   L  T   PCT  All-time  Dif
13. Mike Gundy        Oklahoma State  2005         77  36     .681   .608     .073
    Bronco Mendenhall BYU             2005         82  33     .713   .575     .138
    Frank Solich      Ohio            2005         66  49     .574   .498     .076
10. George O'Leary    UCF             2004         70  56     .556   .517     .039
 9. Mike Riley        Oregon State    2003         87  73     .544   .484     .060
 8. Gary Pinkel       Missouri        2001        101  62     .620   .543     .077
    Mark Richt        Georgia         2001        126  44     .741   .647     .094
 6. Gary Patterson    TCU             2000        120  44     .732   .535     .197
 5. Kirk Ferentz      Iowa            1999        108  78     .581   .529     .052
    Bob Stoops        Oklahoma        1999        158  39     .802   .718     .084
 3. Mack Brown        Texas           1998        158  46     .775   .716     .059
 2. Larry Blakeney    Troy            1991         75  71     .514   .514      NA
 1. Frank Beamer      Virginia Tech   1987        224 108  2  .674   .609     .065

Note: Troy Data includes only record as I-A. Blakeney is the only coach they have had since becoming I-A.

It seems obvious that the recipe for longevity as a coach is winning, but how much winning? Apparently the answer is, winning more than the school has traditionally won. That is the universal truth of all of these coaches leading in longevity. Thus a winning percentage of .544 is good enough at Oregon State where they historically have won only .484 of their games, but it would never do at Texas or Oklahoma, where the schools have both won over 70% of their games, historically.

Nice tribute to Grobe, mainly comprised of him addressing the team in the locker room.  Evidently when the new President (Hatch) came in in 2005 he tightened up the admissions for football.
