#29 in coaches poll and #31 in Harris, #32 BCS. Will be hosting Rice Saturday at noon.

Would love some bobcat fans that are close to make the trip and help pack the stadium!

On another note, what bowl is OU headed to? Looks like it was a tough season down the stretch. Wish you the best in the post season

Good luck to Marshall vs. Rice in the CUSA title game.  The Herd has certainly improved over the course of the season.

As for Ohio's bowl chances...amazingly, and this says a lot about the current state of college football, we still have a good chance to get in a bowl.  If NIU beats BGSU in the MAC title game, we will probably get in a bowl.

I'll listen to see if there's any mention of it here. I doubt there will be.

I think this came as a pretty big surprise to Marshall.  Sorry they have to make that trip to Houston.

After Marshall hosted the MAC Championship for years regardless of who was in the game, I have trouble feeling sorry for their fans/alumni.  It was their choice (this time) to go to Conference USA.

Marshall got completely hosed.  The commissioner of CUSA changed the formula for determining the tiebreaker yesterday.  I'd be furious right now if I was a Herd fan.  I'm glad our conference has a neutral site for the championship game.

This is a good point. I don't remember the details, but I seem to recall a MAC team getting hosed for having to travel to Huntington at least one year if not other years as well. Seems like it might have been Toledo.

I don't believe you can call it being "hosed" when it was part of the agreement when Marshall came back into the MAC.  You might question the agreement, but it known by everyone from the start.  And, I'll have to say, the attendance was always quite good.  I attended several of the games myself.

From what I've read, the BCS rankings were the tie-breaker since they had identical records and did not play each other. Rice has had an edge in the BCS rankings for at least two weeks. What is Marshall claiming the tie-breaker was?

It's a semantics game right now.  Did they change it, or was it never communicated?  Here's the release:

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/c-usa/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2013-14/misc_non_event/MarshallatRiceRelease.pdf

One side says that "BCS rankings" are the tiebreaker.  BCS rankings count "others receiving votes" for Harris/USA today in the formula, but only top 25 computer teams are ranked.  So, in this scenario, Marshall earns points for receiving 13 out of 1,550 possible AP votes and 10 out of 2,625 possible Harris votes.

The other side says "BCS ranking (i.e. average computer ranking) ", which was the wording in the previous week's release.  As vague as that is, I guess that means what the release I linked above says.  BCS, but rolled out into full rankings.  In this scenario, Rice gets the benefit of an average computer ranking of 47th, where Marshall was 57th.

Had Marshall not received the votes they did this week, and scenario one was used, it would have made for an interesting 0 vs 0 tiebreaker.

Who would ever think a conference football championship at a non neutral site, using a rating system not intended for determining who is the XXth team in the country would fail?

It is because Marshall and Toledo earned the rights to hosts those games:

Rankings reflect last AP poll prior to game being played. Winner in bold.

From 1997 through 2003, the championship game was played at campus sites (listed in italics).
Year East Score West Score
1997 Marshall 34 Toledo 14
1998 Marshall 23 Toledo 17
1999 #11 Marshall 34 Western Michigan 30
2000 Marshall 19 Western Michigan 14
2001 #20 Marshall 36 Toledo 41
2002 Marshall 49 Toledo 45
2003 #13 Miami 49 #20 Bowling Green 27
Since 2004, the game has been played at Ford Field in Detroit.
Year East Score West Score
2004 Miami 27 Toledo 35
2005 Akron 31 Northern Illinois 30
2006 Ohio 10 Central Michigan 31
2007 Miami 10 Central Michigan 35
2008 Buffalo 42 #12 Ball State 24
2009 Ohio 10 Central Michigan 20
2010 Miami 26 #24 Northern Illinois 21
2011 Ohio 20 Northern Illinois 23
2012 #18 Kent State 37 #19 Northern Illinois 44 (2 OT)
2013 Bowling Green   #16 Northern Illinois

No, from 1997 to 2000 the Championship game was held in Huntington, regardless of anyone earning it.

"From 1997-2000, the league’s title game was held at Marshall Stadium in Huntington, W.Va. Beginning with the 2001 game, the site alternated between the West Division and East Division champion.  In 2004 the MAC championship game was moved to its current neutral site at Ford Field."

And yes, I did have a problem with that agreement.

So you are telling me we screwed the Herd twice: 1) By beating them, and 2) By laying an egg in the middle of the season lowering their computer rankings.

While what you posted is not incorrect, it appears that the MAC has worded this in an ambiguous way (shocker). Yes, the title game was held in Huntington, but isn't that because Marshall was the top seed in the MAC those years? If Ohio had been the top seed, would they have had to play the title game in Huntington? Otherwise, what a coincidence that the title game venue from 1997-2000 was in the same stadium as the top seed.

That's my point. As I recall, in one (or more) of those years, I think Toledo had the top billing but had to travel to Huntington anyway because of this agreement.

Edit: In fact, I think the Championship game was to be held in Huntington regardless of whether or not Marshall was in it.

A part of me feels bad for Marshall. They were trying to get away from a bush league conference. Unfortunate for their fans that their leaders weren't smart enough to realize they were joining a bush league conference.

Say what you want about Marshall and Temple fans, at least their fans both want and believe their programs are capable of competing at a higher level. Personally, I would love to share conference affiliation with both of those two schools.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Darn you Robert Fox, now you got me thinking about it and in checking the record books, the only year Marshall did NOT have the best conference record was in 2000, when they were 5-3 and WMU was 7-1, yet they still played in Huntington. Man, I would be mad if I were WMU and had to play at Marshall despite having the top seed.

I know it happened in Toledo for the BB tourney, but for football, that is blatantly unfair.
