I don't want to hear any smack talk from Herd fans ever again regarding MAC and MAC championship game attendance. CUSA is an absolute joke. Marshall traveled a crowd that could be measured in the dozens and Rice is hosting and has a few thousand at the most. I know Marshall fans will blame distance but I am sorry you can't use that excuse. You chose CUSA so you have to live with it. Besides I thought Herd fans would travel the globe to see their team play in championship games.
I was really impressed with both BG and NIU's turnout last night.

Back to the Marshall crowd, you would think they would have a few thousand alumni in Texas? At least they should show up.

We used to credit winning teams. Now days the more fun thing is to discredit the beaten team, even after a very good season.

I think EMU would draw more fans for a home title game than Rice. Neutral site would be understandable. But that had to be a disappointing crowd and a sign of things to come for much of the new C-USA.

I guarantee that this game would have drawn better if it had been played in Huntington as it apparently would have been without some slight of hand by the C-USA office.

I saw part of the UCF-SMU game in Dallas today and their crowd was tabbed to be in the "hundreds" because of the ice storm.  A lot of people without power and roads were impassable.  They couldn't raise the FG nets because they were iced over and the Gatorade was turning to Slurpees.  I don't think that was an issue in Houston, though.  Maybe the Texans' lack of success has created general apathy for football in Houston.  Or maybe the high school playoffs were being played today.

It was a pretty cold day today in Houston and we don't do well with the cold. Almost no one goes outside if its under 55 degrees here.  That coupled with the fact that Rice is a really small school I think made the crowd small.

Also almost no one that didn't go to Rice cares about Rice.  Since TXAM is so close, houstonians looking for a college team to follow generally just follow them or UT.

Wouldn't a better comparison for attendance smack be the games last weekend? I believe Marshall had over 25,000 for a noon game on Black Friday and OU had 12,000 for their game on Saturday. If you can't draw fans for a home game, one should never consider a stadium expansion. I doubt Ohio U would have had a better crowd than Marshall with the same problems of weather; 1100 miles and the weather?

Marshall's game last weekend meant something , unfortunately Ohio's meant little. Marshall will draw better usually, it's in a bigger metro area and has a larger following overall, congrats on getting to a championship game and making a bowl.

(A) If Ohio had been playing for a division championship, we would have drawn more than we did on Black Friday.
(B) We didn't join a conference that requires us to travel 1100 miles in December, and there is a reason for that.

For one, our game was on Black Friday as well at 2:00...not Saturday. And, you guys certainly had a lot more to play for against a great opponent. If we were playing BGSU for the MAC East - there's no question we might have at least approached 20,000.

Not to mention, Marshall is much more of a commuter school with local students. There's very, very few of our students that even live within 2 hours of campus.

You guys really think we had 12,000 plus for UMass? And before you say tickets sold, how many of that 12,000 was students who were not there, because those are not sold tickets.

I was at the game with 3 others sitting in the Marshall section. There may have been two hundred Marshall fans there but that would be max. The Marshall section was filled with mostly Houstonians rooting for Rice like us. It was a extremely cold day for Houston fans who are used to attending games in the dome and Reliant stadium. I enjoy attending outdoor games which is why we went plus Rice is always the ultimate underdog with their size and academics. Kudos to the Rice students who showed up in full force and stayed until the end of the game. Rice had waited longer than us to win a championship.....1957 was their last.

You make a good point on the value of trying to push forward with a stadium expansion with a paid figure of only 13,000 on Black Friday. Attendance was down about 1500 per game in 2013 from the year before but the extra September Saturday game this year off set those numbers somewhat for the year average. Student support was super strong last year with Ohio opening the season 7-0. It showed an undefeated Bobcat team will fill up Peden Stadium over capacity. A bad Bobcat team will never draw capacity mid week.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

And now you were nearly sitting home in bowl season because of that.

You can't compare that attendance to what we would have gotten at home. There would have been at least 35k there coming off of the ECU game.

I will tell you the excitement in Huntington hasn't been higher since 2002. Then we laid an egg at rice. Our team was also distracted by the fact that they blatantly made up a formula to give the home game to rice and ignored the rule of highest bcs ranking, which we were at

It is a tough time though, knowing we would have a crowd of 3k for the title game, it is pathetic and we all knee it was coming yet cusa made up a way to let that happen.

Oh well, on to next year. And good luck against ECU but I don't think you can beat them at a neutral site.

Yes, we were nearly sitting at home in bowl season because we stayed in the MAC. Just like Terd of the mighty CUSA nearly beat us this year.

And...what's your point? Is anyone saying you wouldn't have had more Marshall fans in attendance if the game had been in Huntington?

You are absolutely correct about winning seasons producing larger attendance at the games. Remember a couple years ago during the losing season period, the season attendance average dropped down to 15,000 per game. Just shows how quickly the base leaves when you don't win.

Can't blame us for that. We make money at bowl games instead of lose money like a lot of schools, we make millions in revenue sharing, instead of thousands. Its helped us build cutting edge facilities on campus that will help tremendously in the future.

I hate not having all the games close to home, but we play 3 Mac teams next year and we now have several driveable games with mtsu and wku in the fold with ODU and Charlotte.

Also playing OU and little Miami every year is great.

Laughbif you want, but the tie breaker says BCS ranking and they made up a new formula. Jerry Palm did the same thing when hr was interviewed that they decided they wanted the game at rice on Saturday and were not happy we got votes on Sunday and came up with a formula that negated those votes. It is what it is, we got a pretty decent bowl vs Maryland that we are looking forward to. Our first million dollar bowl

Still waiting for a media public records request to finally reveal how many season tickets we have in all sports.

Tickets sold. Now that I said that I will guess probably only a couple hundred of that were students.

We had record season tickets this year. I have two tickets in that 12000 that went unused.

Final point: Black Friday games are the dumbest thing ever. >dumb than two home men's hoops games over Thanksgiving Break.

Ohio had 7 home games this year, anyone that showed up to see UMass was just a bonus. no big deal. Truth is, we get good, strong crowds for our home games and 1 game on black Friday or a tueday night doesn't change that. We all know we sacrifice 1 or 2 games a year for TV and the 5K-10K butts in seats we lose is more than made up for by the 500K-1M TV sets we gain.

MY STATE. MY TEAM.
