Marshall Game Notes   http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ecu/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2013-14/misc_non_event/2013ECUFBNotes.pdf

East Carolina has a nice team

QB Carden, 71% Comp, 3 times threw for 5 TDs, Va Tech and Tulane sacked him 7 and 6 times respectively. Marshall held him without a TD and his efficiency under 100.

WR 8 with 18 or more catches. Ten receivers caught TDs. Long reception 60 yds, Wiggins. Hardy 105/1218/8.

RB Cooper, 995 yds, 35 for 186 vs No Carolina, season long run of 28 vs No Car,

Marshall scored 59, scored 5 TDs rushing, avgd 5 per rush on 53 rushing attempts.

LB  260lb D. Johnson leads tm in tkls, tfl & sacks

EC depth chart shows they run a three man front though Johnson seems like a DE.

Anyone else jump in, please.

The main thing to take away from our CUSA losses, in both those games we tried to use to run to set up the pass. We are a pass first team. When we spread the field, it makes the running game hyper effective. Coop isn't the biggest back (like Vonta Leach was), but he is fast and durable (more like Chris Johnson was). If he gets into the secondary, he can scorch you. We play an up-tempo game on offense (no huddle mostly) and have made great strides on the defensive side of the ball (since being ranked near the bottom of the country in recent seasons). The defense shows signs of being up tempo (attacking) as well, but isn't quite there yet. Like I said in another post, having been a Pirate fanatic for decades, one thing about this team, when they feel maligned and angry, they can really light up the scoreboard. If your D has had great strength conditioning throughout the year, they should be ok, if not, this has the potential to get ugly in the 2nd half.

S&C is actually one of the frequent points of angst around here, so it could get ugly. That being said, our secondary, in theory, is the strength of the defense. Our two best defensive players are our corners, who if healthy are pretty good. The issue comes with the D line. We have had a tough time against bigger, bruising O lines, and if the other team is able to push our D line around and establish the run early, the entire defense falls apart. We get a pretty good pass rush, but it hasn't been as good the second half of the season after we lost our best DE to injury. We start 2 true freshmen now (both have been really good so far, especially for true freshmen).

On O, our issues are (1) line play, and (2) our QB's attitude. We are young and smallish up front, and the group has not performed like we hoped at the beginning of the season (injuries to our 2 most experienced linemen in the first week didn't help). Again, if we are up against a bigger D Line, we usually look like crap. Against a smaller defensive front we look better. As for our QB, everyone agrees something isn't right, but no one can agree what it is--fear of injury, just not caring anymore, etc. Our base offense is a zone read type option, with lots of play action passing deep. However, if the bowl game is anything like the rest of the season, you will see frequent dives up the middle for 2 yards or less, regardless of down and distance, because our QB refuses to keep the ball. If your defensive front can get pressure early, you probably will get him frustrated and that will be that for the offense.

Also, bring the house on every punt. Our protection sucks, and our backup kicker is now our punter.

Gut says....we get crushed.  ECU is legit....other than the Marshall beatdown...this was a really good team...especially on offense.  Road wins at UNC and NC State...not too shabby (even if both programs are down this year)....and hard-fought loss to VT and 3-OT loss to Tulane.....this team was tested with a tough schedule.

After watching 'Cats last month...I have no reason to believe they have a chance.  Mainly b/c the defense isn't very good....and our QB has flat quit.

Early Vegas Line...ECU -12'.....I'll take the Pirates and run

Play tight man coverage and Carden is worthless. Good for a few INTs and that's it.

Their D is stout against the run but Tali had his best game ever against ECU, he was a man possessed. His dad played at ecu so that was extra motivation lol.

Man up on ECU and put your best guy on Hardy and you are good to go.

I dont know if calling the CUSA MVP "worthless" is completely accurate. Marshall did have a good game plan against our offense. Its something similar to what VT did to hold us to 10 points. I havent looked to see what type of primary defensive scheme Ohio runs but if its any type of zone then Carden and our WR will pick it apart. He has a high completion percentage because alot of throws are quick throws(routine plays) and then our WR make people miss to get extra yardage. Its a high tempo offense that is designed to wear down the defense. When we score TDs then we are hard to beat but if we are held to FGs and Ohio stays close then it could get interesting. We arent Alabama or anything but we are proud of our team despite coming short of becoming conference champs. I just want to win a bowl. It hasnt quite been 10 years. We last won the Hawaii Bowl against Boise State in 2007.

Nothing like having Marshall guys arguing with ECU guys on an Ohio site.

ECU is balanced enough to do what the defense gives.  If ECU can get into that quick rhythem early then they will score often.  If they start slow, this will become a close ball game.  I am more concerned about Ohio being able to control the line of scrimmage and keep the ECU offense off of the field.
