These guys are not taking this very easily:

"Some OU fans are delusional. Looking at their message board, some are saying they were picked over UT because of their band, b/c they've won 2 bowls in a row, b/c they supposedly have a better national brand, b/c of Solich, b/c their QB Tyler Tettleton (I think that's his first name) is known nationally, etc. Seriously? These people have to be joking."

They are living in the past. 10 years ago, Toledo was a bigger brand than Ohio. Not so anymore. Poor Rockets.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Not sure it's branding, but I have to sort of agree with a lot of what they're saying. They deserve it more than we do, but hey I'll take the gift horse.

I agree in the fact that Toledo is a much better team than we are. No doubt about that. However, had they beaten Akron in the final game, they could have left no question to their bowl status. Even the Blade knows this.

I don't really blame them. By most on-field measurements, they deserve to go. As has been pointed out here, however, it's not only about game results. They can dismiss it all they want, but trailing us in attendance had to hurt them, and getting blasted in last year's bowl by USU probably didn't help. I also think their board is undervaluing the intangibles that help make a decision between two teams from the same conference with the same record. They're pulling out the old saw about what a hick town Athens is, failing to notice we have about twice as many living alumni, and quite a few more who are actively engaged with the school. They roll their eyes, but I also think the 110 makes a difference for a bowl committee. I'm guessing committees talk to each other, and I know the 110 brought a lot of fun to the streets of Shreveport last year. I don't think the differences were big, and I personally don't think it was fair to Toledo as a football team, but I fully understand why a committee would choose Ohio over Toledo.

I agree with several of their arguments.  Neither team really deserved a bowl, but if I was on a Bowl Committee, I would choose Ohio also.  We have the larger student population. a bigger alumni base, better home attendance figures, and more recent success in both football and basketball.  Basically, Ohio supports their teams better than Toledo does right now.  Toledo may have more historical success than Ohio, but using that logic would place Miami in a bowl.

I can't blame them. With the new system next year creating more of the "haves" and the "have nots", I could see myself not following college ball ever again like I have for the past 40+ years. Toledo and Ohio will be in the later category. They probably do deserve a bowl over us but college sports are all about the sexy dollar and we are still living off of the attention we garnered in 2011 and 2012 I would guess. Band, campus, fans and brand are in our favor for sure (for what that is worth). Don't recall anyone every saying "boy that Toledo Campus is beautiful" in my lifetime.

If the stated reasons are not why we were chosen, then why does the dude think that we were chosen?  His conclusion is exactly wrong; most of us here realize that we shouldn't be going over FATMAN and the reasons stated are part of the only logical conclusion/guess as to why we were choosed.

Actually in many ways that's not what's happening next year. FBS non-AQ schools for the first time ever will be getting a piece (although a smaller piece) of the Big Boys pie on a regular basis.  It'll average about a million dollars per school.   It doesn't depend on performance on the field, or anything else.

Get real folks, they should be furious!  We would be if the shoe was on the other foot.  It's obvious the Beef Bowl did not make a choice based on the on field performances of the two teams.  There must have been "other reasons" for OUr selection.

And, 695, by the way using past performance doesn't say send Miami to a Bowl.  They were not Bowl eligible this year.  But, past history when you have been successful in the MAC over the years should hold some weight when you are Bowl eligible.  I guess it just didn't hold enough to sway the Beef selection commmittee.

My bad OCF. I thought it was further dividing mid levels conferences from the party. Haven't spent much time looking into it but just going off what I hear on TV. I may have misinterpreted. That is a pet peeve of mine and I'm guilty.

Maybe it's because we've won our last two bowl games but they've lost two out of three.  Last year they folded badly in the 4th quarter and lost 41-15 to Utah St. (the team we beat the year before) in the Tater; two years ago they beat AFA 42-41 in the Military Bowl; three years ago they were 8-4 but lost to 6-6 FIU, 34-32 in the Pizza, right in their own back yard.  Maybe our recent success got the attention of the B O'B people.

Bowls don't care about which teams deserve it. They care about which team is going to put the most money in their pockets.   Very little that the NCAA does is about finding out who the most deserving teams are in anything.

Well the fact is that Ohio was chosen over Toledo, and if you read their forum, they have no alternative explanation, at least, no serious ones, so whether they like it or not, it comes down to fan support, and TV ratings. Most of their arguments center around "Toledo was the better team, so they should have been chosen".

Perhaps they were the better team, (at least on some days). What they don't seem to understand is that that has nothing to do with selections. I pointed out before the teams were selected, once you get down to the lower tier bowls, rankings, and team quality have nothing to do with who is selected. It isn't a playoff. It is a for-profit venture. How do bowls make money? They need fans in the seats, and eyeballs on the TV.

Based on the fact that Ohio was chosen over Toledo, Beef apparently concluded that the game would be better attended, and have more TV viewership with Ohio than with Toledo. That much we know, since they did chose Ohio. Is the conclusion correct? I have no way to know, but I'd say Schaus gets some credit here - I'd guess he actively made the case that Ohio would bring more fans and draw higher ratings, and that Schaus was more convincing than the Toledo AD.

Ten years ago Toledo had much more national awareness than Ohio. The fact that Ohio was chosen ahead of them is a credit to what has been built in Athens over the last decade.

The Toledo Blade article MCF posted above hints at an anti-Toledo conspiracy in the MAC offices. Anybody know what that's about? It would be one thing if it was some random message board poster spouting off rumors.....but if this is getting printed in one of the state's largest newspapers, is there something to it?

Does this kind of conspiracy talk remind anyone else of the year we were put into the CBI ahead of a WMU team that knocked us out of the tournament?

Toledo was the site of MAC offices before moving to Cleveland. I don't know if that would lead to any rumors like that.

If we were to go off last years bowl game, we had 12,500 more people in the stands at our game than Toledo's.

Might be tv ratings or name recognition but I believe it's also that we have one of the best AD's in the country. Schaus knows how to shift it into high gear  sell Ohio and close the deal.  He has done it each year in getting us to the best bowl possible.

I understand what L.C. and others are saying about how teams are chosen for these lower tier bowls, but I still can't blame Toledo for being angry.  They were better than Ohio but still snubbed.

This is an awful way to compare the teams. Our game was in Louisiana and their's was in Idaho. Which would you rather travel to in December? Our bowl also featured one school 100 miles away from the bowl site and one 1,000 miles away. Theirs featured one school 300 miles away and the other 1,600 miles away.

FWIW Attendance at the Potato Bowl was pretty similar in 2011 & 2012.
2011: OHIO vs. Utah State: 28,076
2012: Toledo vs. Utah State: 29,243

I understand the outrange from UT fans. If bowl teams were selected based on on-field merit I'd easily give Toledo the bid over us. I really think our name recognition, AD, and more active alumni helped our case. I think Solich's name probably played a little part as well.

Like everybody said, it's really about the benjamins.  Toledo deserves it but no complaints here.  ECU is an excellent team and the biggest concern is that we get creamed again on national TV.  I don't think I could stomach another one.

Don't remember them knocking us out of the MAC tournament in the last ten years.  If I recall the year Hawkins threw his snit fit they had a slightly better record but it was all because they played the West. Our RPI and all other factors were better.

And that's not even including the fact that it's tough logistically and financially to get to Boise.  No easy way to get there.
