Hey Bobcat fans! Been a while since we played y'all in the 90s when Grobe was there. Congrats on getting the bowl invite over the Rockets. Seems I remember y'all having one of the bigger fanbases in the MAC? How much option are y'all running these days with Frank Solich? I've always been a fan of his.

In theory, about a third of our play calls are zone read options. But for some reason our QB refuses to ever keep it, so in reality a third of our play calls end up being dives up the middle for 2 yards.

Please don't beat up our defense too much. The D we had that beat C-USA teams North Texas and Marshall is not the D we have now.

Thanks for posting.  Not much option this year.  We are a very one-dimensional team.  Our favorite play is "Beau-up-the-middle."  It usually nets less than three yards.  Our QB can run when he has a mind to, but this year he's decided he'd rather have someone else get tackled so he just hands the ball off on option-type plays so if your D just ignores the QB run you'll be in great shape.  Our D usually shows up for the first half and then takes a snooze in the second half, so don't worry if you're not in much of a lead at halftime.  What I've said here has been true pretty much for the second half of the season.  One word of warning: Last year for our bowl game we played like a team that had just heard a Knute Rockne "win one for the Gipper" speech and had a collective attitude adjustment.   So, depending on which OHIO team you play -- early season 2013 squad, late season 2013 group, or a clone of last year's bowl team -- you may or may not have anything to worry about.

Welcome!

We don't run the option in the traditional Frank Solich style, but supposedly we are running a spread-option out of the pistol. I say supposedly because our QB rarely keeps the ball.

I look forward to learning more about ECU.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Congrats on the invite Bobcats!... Looking forward to facing you guys on the gridiron.

What to know about ECU:
1) Bowl wins have been hard to come by of late and we are desperate for a win- our last win was against Boise in with Chris Johnson going for 408 all purpose yards and propelling himself into the 1st round of the NFL draft.  Subsequently, we have lost close to Kentucky and Arkansas,  we were demolished by Maryland, and lost to ULaLa in what was basically a home game for them last year in Nawlins.

2) Our QB (Shane Carden) and Reciever (Justin Hardy) are the heart and soul of this team.  When they are clicking, the rest of our offense is clicking and we are hard to stop.

3) The key to beating the Pirates on D is press man coverage and getting pressure on Carden.  In our losses to Tulane and Marshall, Carden threw pick 6's when under pressure and looked rattled.

4) While our defense played very poorly against Marshall, they have improved greatly this year.  Our front 7 are stout - especially at NT and LB.  The key to beating the Pirates on O is throwing over the top and taking advantage of our rather porous secondary.

Here's to a great game, no injuries and an outcome that isn't decided by the Zebras.

Good points, and we are excited to play you guys in Florida!

One intangible is that when we are playing angry and with a chip on our shoulder, we can be tough to beat. I am expecting the team to come out on fire.

Good luck Bobcats!

You're probably familiar with one of our alumni -- Mike Mitchell of the Panthers.

I have a friend who used to teach at ECU, so I've been pulling for you guys (except for one game in 1996) for the past 20 or so years.  I went through Greenville once and it reminded me of Athens, except quite a bit bigger.  If we're on our game, it should be a good one.

Good luck to the Pirates, too.

Im watching him play the Saints right now. As far as the game goes I wish I could make it but theres just no way I can make this game. Ill be watching it on TV and looking forward to a competitive fun injury free game. I was impressed with Ohio when I saw them beat Marshall which is something we couldnt take care of. I cant really explain what happened against them. We didnt play our game that we are capable of playing. Our two other losses were by a combined 8 points to VT and Tulane.  We run a fast paced spread air raid offense and like to utilize multiple receivers. Our running game has been getting better but sometimes it seems to get lost with all of the passing. V. Cooper is a solid running back but hes not big by any means. Hardy and Carden are our stars of the offense. Defense has been solid for a majority of the year minus the Marshall game. We got gashed all over. The rush defense was in the top 10 all year and even though the secondary gave up yards we still had a top 25 overall defense. Damon Magazu is our leader in the secondary and Adonis Armstrong is what we consider our shutdown corner. LBs are big fast and physical playing in a 3-4 defense. Kicker has been shaky all year so we go for it on 4th down a pretty good majority to avoid kicking fgs.

Great site.  Looks like the point differential is off a bit.  Should be more like +23 ECU

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Welcome to the East Carolina visitors. I attended the game at ECU in 1996.

In addition to all of the helpful information our posters provided to you and your coaches, I thought in fairness we should disclose that Jim Grobe resigned last week from Wake Forest to accept the new Quality Control Coach Emeritus position at Ohio University.

Tim Albin will remain on the staff and we will continue to run our favorite packages including “Beau Up the Middle” and the “QB Sit Down Misdirection” play. We will work in the triple option on some series with Daz Patterson (5’7”) at Quarterback playing the role of Kareem Wilson (5’8”) who was our QB in the mid-90’s and rushed for around 2,000 yards during his career.

On defense we will also bring back the 3-4 defense for certain situations. In that package, Terrell Basham (6’4”) will drop back to outside linebacker to play the role of Rahim Slaise who was our 6’6” OLB during the Grobe era.

I hope this is not too much to plan for.

I've always had a small fandom towards ECU. Love the colors and the Pirate logo. Always thought they were kind of a sleeping giant. They sit in a recruiting hot bed, have a seating capacity of 40,000+ (actually an even 50,000 after expansion in 2010), and the other teams in the state have not performed so well. The real competition lies to the south (South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia) and the north (Va Tech). They kind of remind me of an east coast Louisville. Trouble is, Louisville only has/had to deal with UK in their own state. ECU has to deal with Wake, Duke, UNC, NC State and App State.

Appreciate the kind words and I hope that you will continue to be a fan from afar despite the outcome of the game. We had that attitude of anyone, anywhere, anytime in the 90's and into 2000's. We have beat our fare share of BCS teams but have also lost our fare share. This year we have had some very good games but had some games where we thought we should have won and we failed to reach the goal of a conference championship.  Id like to know more about Ohio football and what you think about the game. I wish I could attend but ill be watching on tv.

I was there as well.  If I remember correctly when the game started it was about 60 degrees. Around halftime it was below 40 and windy.  Somewhere around 100 points scored.  The Pirates had a second string freshman QB come in and light us up I think.

When I think about ECU I think Chris Johnson. I've probably watched this highlight video of his a dozen times. In a way, Chris for ECU seemed like Moss for Marshall, Big Ben for Miami, etc... I hope there is nobody as dominant as him on ECU in this year's game. (or I hope they're wearing green)

Yes, I remember it turning very cold and windy by the end of the game.  My Dad and I tailgated with the Grandfather of John Krauss who played for the Bobcats

As for the game, ECU jumped on us pretty quickly and I thought Steve Logan was running the score up a bit.  I think they kept passing when they finally brought in the second team quarterback.

Grobe put in Mike Orlando during the fourth quarter at quarterback and he led us to at least two if not three touchdowns late against their second team.  Final score was 45-55.

I imagine it was a sad for Grobe going to East Carolina as he had many friends including the team physician (Ray Hagley) who were killed in the Marshall plane crash after playing at ECU.

I watched the last quarter of that game on an airport TV.  I think the final was 55-45.

I was there too. I believe Scott Harley may have rushed for 5 TDs.

East Carolina has a beautiful stadium and has terrific fans. I honestly hope our football team could reach the potential of having a 40,000+ seat stadium. Best of luck to you Pirates!

Bobcats lost by 29.  Hope it isn't that ugly today!
