I'm watching the Texas Bowl with Minn & Syracuse -- two AQs from the north playing in a warmer clime in the south on a Friday night during the holidays.  The upper deck of Reliant Stadium is c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y e-m-p-t-y.  There probably aren't 35,000 people there.  It may be an 8-4 team vs a 6-6 team, but the whole point of contracting with AQs is to put butts in the seats.  Sure didn't happen here.

On the flip side, there seems to be a pretty decent crowd in San Francisco for the Fight Hunger Bowl.

I live in the city the game is held and hadn't even heard anything about it for a week.

And by Houston standards, it was coldish today.

It's a smaller stadium -- 41,000 to Reliant's 71,000 -- so the same number of people wouldn't have as many empty seats.

According to ESPN, Texas had 32,000; Fight Hunger 34,000.  Seems about right for both.

neither team comes to mind when you think of teams that travel well. Eyeballs to the TV is probably more of a consideration in today's entertainment environment.

This isnt surprising at all. Syracuse and Minnesota doesn't exactly jump off the page as being a dynamite matchup to begin with. Heck, Minnesota's new outdoor home stadium isn't even big by B1G standards. And Syracuse...there was a time when the basketball team was more likely to put butts in the Carrier Dome than football.

On a suprising note, Navy has sold out their ticket allotment for their bowl game for the 10th straight time.

Between active duty and the reserves, there are more than half a million people in the U.S. Navy, and that isn't accounting for veterans and families. That's probably a bigger "alumni" base than any university. They're naturally not all passionate Navy football fans, but it only takes a small fraction of a number that big to sell a bowl allotment.

It's still pretty impressive. Especially considering that Navy has run the same offense for a number of years. They're essentially not seeing anything new, but they still continue to sell out their allotment. That's impressive to me.

It wasn't that cold, I went to the game and they had the roof of Reliant open.  Also you must not keep a very close ear to the streets - I saw it mentioned in several places and got tons of emails about cheap tickets from the likes of groupon and their competitors.

OP was right that it was pretty empty, but it was far more empty on the Syracuse side which the cameras were facing. 34k sounds like a stretch but quite a few MN fans showed up actually.  Definitely way more than we had last year in Arkansas not far up the road from Houston.

It ended up being a really great game, and for those who are big band fans you need to take a look at the golden gophers "Mound of Sound"

I said it was coldish for Houston, not for us. I suppose I don't have much street cred, but I didn't hear anyone talking about it nor any mention on the radio. Not much room with all the Texans panic going on, I suppose.

Navy always does well because they always play where there is a military presence and the military actively supports attendance at games.

I've always wondered if it's mandatory for cadets and midshipmen to show up at football games unless they have some other duty.  The service academies' student section always seems to be full, even when the teams have lousy records.

Syracuse is a private school and never travels well. The big problem with these bowl games are all the automatic bids. I assume without looking the game must be an ACC bowl. Few ACC schools are going to send many to that venue. bowls need to stay more regional when locking in conferences. Attendance was horrible at today's Gator Bowl between Nebraska and Georgia too.

Well, no, you don't, though if it makes you feel better, neither does Alan Swank, Aaron Stone, or Grant Burkhardt. Speaking of which, congrats on surviving a year of that clown GB on Bobcat Radio!

Actually surprising, as the Gator Bowl is in Jacksonville, FL. Besides being a nice City, it is only a half hour drive to the Georgia border.  I believe the annual Florida v Georgia game is played annually in JAX.

Regarding the Nebraska-georgia game,I'll give the fair weather fans take a day off. It looked like a terrible weather day to me.

You are talking about SEC and Big Ten fans not MAC fans, a little rain isn't enough to keep them from going.  If I recall there wasn't even anyone in the upper deck and the lower seating was barley half full.

But back to the  topic "No More Complaints about MAC teams not filling big stadiums"

Most Mac teams don't fill their little home stadiums let alone a big one away from home.

That.  And they both had subpar seasons by their standards.  And they both played last year in the Capital One bowl.   Not exactly an exciting and fresh matchup...

If I were Georgia I would just want the season to be over, so what was the point in going to the bowl game? Seems like they just got gut punched over and over and over again with their injuries. The Aaron Murray torn ACL was just the worst. And then, above all, a sure handed, NFL-bound TE drops two wide open passes that would have lead to scores to beat Nebraska. UGA? More like UGH.
