In all seriousness, this should be Jim Grobe's next job if indeed he is not done coaching. Say what you want about Wake Forest being in the ACC, but the Army job is more prestigous. And he loves running the triple-option, so he wouldn't have to recruit "his guys" right away. This should be a no-brainer for both parties.

Very true. Grobe would be a great fit at Army.

I could see Grobe at Army.  But, as a Navy guy I don't want it to happen.  They might figure out a way to win every now and then.  I like the ring of 12 straight and counting!

For whatever reason, passing QBs don't seem to gravitate toward the service academies.  Staubach was the exception to the rule.  The service academies by and large go big for option football and he may be the best option coach in the country.  It would be a great fit.

I'm ambivalent when watching the Army-Navy game.  I went Army but my dad went Marines and my older brothers Navy.  That said, I wouldn't recommend to any coach that he take the Army job.  Reason: Given Army's ineptitude for the last dozen years, it seems pretty clear that Army hasn't been able to recruite as well as Navy and Air Force.

Why?  I'm not sure but I tend to think it has something to do with the way Army service might be perceived vis a vis  Navy and Air Force service.

Army might make a young man "Army strong," but it also has a greater possibility of putting a newly commissioned junior officer in harm's way than Navy or Air Force service.  Indeed, when I was a senior at Ohio and was pondering military service, both Dad (WWI) and my brothers Dean and Gene were urging me to go Navy for that very reason.  As late brother Dean observed, go Navy and "you get three hots and a cot."  (He and Gene spoke from experience; during WWII Dean was a Navy aviator who flew anti-submarine patrols, and Gene was on an LCP at Borneo,  Guinea and Okinawa.)

For me, in the Army in Korea in the field it was more apt to be shivering in a sleeping bag in a pup tent erected in snow or mud.

I tend to think that such reality causes young men willing to commit to military service after graduating from an academy to prefer Navy or Air Force over Army.

If given the opportunity to coach Army, for Grobe's sake,  I hope he passes.

I don't think you mean North Korea.

Monroe. The lad will be surrounded by officers and NCO's with combat patches. They will take care of him. Better there than Afgan. What is his branch, Infantry? My son is a platoon leader too. PM his first name and I will add him to my prayer list.

The issue of Army's football recruiting has come up several times around here, both in newspaper articles and in interviews on Sports Talk Radio.

Apparently one of Army's biggest problems is that their summer military training  is,overall, more physically demanding then Navy's or Air Force's.
That means that Army has trouble recruiting certain types of players. It also means that their  players start  fall camp in shape, but not "bulked up"
They say its really hard to try to get players, especially linemen ,to "bulk up" during the season.

Give some credit to the Navy program, too.  Remember, this is Paul Johnson's program that he built and handed over to Coach Niamalatolo.  Air Force has sprinkled in a couple of wins here and there, but for the most part Navy has been dominant over them, as well.  What Navy is doing is remarkable, and one of the more underrated stories in college football.  They have become very competative on an annual basis including solids wins against Indiana and Pitt this year (and should have beat Notre Dame).  Granted those are great teams this year, but they are still good wins over BCS conference team.   Keenan Reynolds just set the record for touchdowns for a QB as a sophomore and should be a Heisman candidate next year (should have been one this year).  They run the option to perfection all while having the fewest turnovers in college football.  If only Nick Sloan could have made that extra point in Toledo.

Air Force was awful this year, and the academy itself seems to be having issues of late, so there's an opportunity for Army to at least move past them.  I think Grobe would be a perfect fit, as long as they still lose to Navy :)

Someone may have the stats [looks in LC's direction] to prove me wrong, but it really seems like turnovers were the bproblem (well, a very big problem) during the Knorr era. The fact that Navy is so good at hanging onto the ball shows that it isn't a function of option football.

Thanks. Another young stud I know used Army logistical experience to get in with Amazon. He was also a CH47 "Chinook" pilot. Just had a thought. I will have to ask him if Amazon is working on a CH47 "drone" for the big orders. "Go big or go home!" Might be another retrofit for Boeing.

8 turnovers in 11 games.  I firmly believe QB Reynolds is the most underrated player in the game.  He manages the game well - as you can see does not commit turnovers.  He's little, but takes big hits all game long, and can actually pass the ball, which adds to his threat.  He had SEVEN touchdowns vs San Jose St.

"The Midshipmen have done a superb job of not beating themselves so far this season, ranking No. 1 nationally in fewest turnovers (eight in 11 games) and fewest penalties (2.82 per game)."

"The Black Knights have successfully moved the ball against the Mids. Last year, Army rolled up 418 total yards against Navy and had just 13 points to show for it. Turnovers, untimely penalties and other mistakes have short-circuited promising drives and caused the Black Knights to either come up empty or settle for field goals."

Here are the numbers for Knorrmageddon:
2001 (11 games) -- 18 TOs (14 fumbles, 4 INTs)
2002 (12 games) -- 25 TOs (16 fumbles, 9 INTs)
2003 (12 games) -- 26 TOs (19 fumbles, 7 INTs)
2004 (11 games) -- 22 TOs (11 each).
The margins for those years were -5, 0, -1 and +1, respectively.

By comparison, here are the numbers for the past four seasons:
2010 (13 games) -- 32 TOs (12 fumbles, 20 INTs)
2011 (14 games) -- 27 TOs (16 fumbles, 11 INTs)
2012 (13 games) -- 10 TOs (5 each)
2013 (12 games) -- 21 TOs (11 fumbles, 10 INTs).
The margins for those years were -7, 0, +15 and +1, respectively.

Interestingly those are almost identical, 90 over 4 years versus 91 over 4 years. I think the answer is that psychologically the turnover seems worse when the team isn't good. With a good team, a turnover is just another hurdle to overcome, whereas with one not so good, it is something that may cost you the game.

Very good point. Also, I wonder if I am remembering fumbles, including recovered fumbles, as opposed to lost turnovers. It was a joke among my buddies how many consecutive plays we could run without fumbling, that "fumble" was statistically our 3rd favorite play, etc.

This makes me think Grobe will be sitting out this year then. Perhaps he's waiting to return to Ohio once Frank retires!
