Super Bowl in NJ

Why did the NFL choose a cold weather/non-dome stadium to play the 48th Super Bowl?

Has the NFL allowed some type of pressure of fairness, ie spreading the wealth to an area that has never hosted the game to stand in the place of common sense?

NJ, Ohio, what's the difference. Perhaps since my hometown team Cleveland cannot get a team near the Super Bowl that soon the city will be able to host one!

I caught part of an interview Paul Tagliabue did with Mike Tirico on ESPN radio yesterday. He said they almost did a Super Bowl in NY/NJ after 9/11 because they had to push the whole season back one week, including the Super Bowl, and they weren't sure whether SB host city New Orleans could have accommodated that change. It ended up working out in New Orleans, but they wanted to try the NY/NJ Super Bowl anyway, so here we are.

So long as LA doesn't have a pro team, it seems to me the smart thing to do would be hold the Super Bowl in LA every year. You have everything the NFL wants: media, celebrities, money, great weather, a guaranteed neutral site game.

I get the feeling that the Maras (or whoever built the stadium) pressured the NFL to bring the Super Bowl to NJ to showcase the new stadium. I think now someone at the NFL has various personal body parts in a wringer over this. First, they put strict clamps on tailgating -- you can only "tailgate" inside your vehicle in the parking lots closest to the stadium. Reinforces the No Fun League image. Now they'll probably have sleet, snow, cold and God knows what else during the game. Big bonehead move.

Not to mention they're trying to force Miami to put a retractable roof on their stadium because it rained during the Super Bowl ONCE, then they turn around and give the game to a place where the weather will almost certainly be awful.

As usual I guess I'm in the minority as I think it's great! It's good to see the NFL get back to its roots. Once upon a time football used to be an outdoor sport. And the inclement weather should be something both teams are used to. Denver is probably laughing- they play in this weather from December on so no biggie for them. Seattle might not play football games in snow but they do play in cold rainy games @ the end of the year. So I love it- football's been getting too esoteric for my tastes.

Now if they could only get an SEC team to play a cold weather game in the Upper Midwest.......

Having it 15 minutes from my house makes it better.
So this week we get 2 outdoor hockey games at Yankee Stadium plus the Super Bowl.

it's football. it can be played in the elements. It's supposed to be played in the elements.

Must we kowtow to the "higher class" of people that attend the superbowl versus those who froze their arses off in green bay, chicago and philly in recent weeks? Is the superbowl even football? I say it's not. It's a joke.

Very few people tailgate at the Super Bowl - its all corporate functions - even pregame.

Having the Super Bowl in the occasional cold weather location is great from a business perspective. Just think if it does snow during the Super Bowl or the days before? It will make the most talked about event of the year even more talked about. More people will tune in if it snows, just to see what it is all about. It will not ruin the integrity of the game like some people say. Also, NYC is the most important market by a long shot. Corporate partners want this sort of thing because they can maximize their investment. Having the game in NYC is a no brainer.

The only problem I have with this year's Super Bowl is this...

if everything goes well it will be referred to as the Super Bowl in NYC.

If not, it will be the Super Bowl in NJ.

Ugh...

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is the only reason any of these leagues exist, since we've seen lockouts (or close to) in all 4 major leagues the last 20 years (which, remember, NBA's lockout was the reason our game vs. Temple in 2011 was on ESPN proper, one more reason I was glad the NBA was not playing)

And for the record, I think it's great the game is in NY/NJ, and that the game is actually outdoors, not like when the SB was in Minneapolis or Detroit

Doubtful if any of you, excited that its in NYC area are attending but like the idea of watching a chill bowl from the comforts of your TV manhole room.

Why yes I do, thank you!

With the predicted high to be around or near 45 degrees Sunday in the metro NYC area, I doubt the weather's a factor in the locals choosing to not go to the game. 45 is balmy for this time of year. More likely it's the exorbitant prices being charged to go to the game. Who wants to pay $1500 or more per ticket when they can watch the big game on a nice HD TV in the comfort of their own home? Caveat: I would if the Browns ever made it to the Super Bowl, but that's crazy talk right there.

So does this mean that it might be blacked out in the NYC area? How embarrassing would that be.

I'm sure that ticket sales would be better if there was an East Coast team there. Only die-hard Broncos/Seahawks fans will make the trek.

There is little to NO ticket buying opportunity to John Q. public or Super Fan. This event is about Corperate sponsors and BIG Business. Excellent read:

The only seats I've heard were available are on the "secondary" market.

The prices are dropping , but are still way above face.

I'm a die hard Giants fan, but there are several other teams I would go to see, especially since I live close to the Stadium.

But paying over face, plus $150. for a parking pass, to see 2 teams I have no interest in, just to say I was there, doesn't make sense.
