Decided on a whim today to book my hotels for next season.  This is by far the earliest I have ever booked rooms.  I usually book in April.  Not only are all rooms practically sold out, but when you do find a room available there is either a 2 night minimum required ( a total of $479) or the rooms for a single night are $409 per night.  Yes, you read that correctly.....$409.  Really??  For a mediocre Athens Hotel on a Saturday night.  No thanks.

If you don't mind a scenic drive, check Burr Oak Lodge.

Book your room in Parkersburg. Only a 1/2 hour drive to Athens.

A quick check of Expedia found nothing available in Athens Sept. 20-21.

People have waited 38 years for the heated rivalry with Idaho to resume.

Noticed this morning that the Logan HIX has rooms that weekend for $135-$150/night with apparently no minimum stay.

This happens all over the country.  Try booking a room anywhere near Louisville during Kentucky Derby week for example.

If you spend that much on a hotel in Athens, you must then do this:

The OhioBobcats.com release said dates and times would be released in early March.

No, I'm thinking Chixsgotgame understands Return on Investment.   The ROI is not worth the $400 plus per night.

Obviously she's in the minority, or they wouldn't be able to charge these prices.  Why do you think we've got another hotel going up on East State Street that's will be finished by next fall?

To be sure, I joined that Minority about 2009. Lots of places to stay if you do not mind a little drive. Favorite with a group was out at Lake Hope. Cabins are excellent and having the kitchen was grand. I seriously STOPPED giving them my money. Stayed on the river beside Marina Towers in Chicago for the illinois game 2 weeks ago for 79 bucks at a 4 star hotel, that's 30 bucks uner the regular rate at the Holiday Inn Express in Athens..... Granted parking was another 24 and a 3 block walk but still got off cheaper than staying in Athens almost ANY weekend.

Well, I think we are getting more like State College, Pa., then Chicago in terms of hotel prices.  While that's not good for your wallet, it's very good for the local economy in terms of revenue and the room taxes.  Since I live in Athens and don't have to pay those high prices, I'm all for helping the local economy.  And, theoretically at least, if the city can get more in terms of hotel room taxes maybe they'll be a little less hungry to increase my property taxes and/or the local sales tax.  I do remember when our youngest daughter was a student at the U. of Michigan, we paid very high room rates, especially if we went to AA on a football weekend or the weekend of any other significant activity.  When our whole clan went there for her graduation, we practically needed a second mortgage on our house to pay the hotel bills! While that's a bit of hyperbole, it makes the point!

Parkersburg is a nice place to stay for football games. It's 32 minutes from my house downtown to Peden Stadium. The one big downside is that it is not great if you want Court St. until 2:00 am on Friday night before the game. Most of the visiting teams coming from east, northeast, or south of Athens stay in Parkersburg. I'm really lucky that my in-laws live in Athens, but Homecoming is the only night we stay before a game.

The Athens room rates are ridiculous, but it's because there is demand. Unless you are visiting a large city, most college towns are impossible to stay in cheaply for a home football game. The hardest cities for me have been State College and Morgantown. Columbus is never a problem.

There are also some excellent cabins around the Hocking Hills area, including some very close to that HIX for less. Nelsonville bypass makes it more convenient than before.

were there good spots in Nelsonvillle? It's not closed...it just requires a trip down one of two deceleration ramps. Not to digress but I am soooooooo thankful I have a choice not to go through Nville

And Norris is correct about the cabins. Lots of really nice housing and with much greater character and comfort than the hotels at less or similar pricing. Just got to do a bit o homework.

FWIW OCF. I can see your tax argument but, if Athens is like Muncie, aside from the taxes there is no money staying in the local economy as all the hotels are owned by folks far, far away.

Well, it certainly would be better if the hotels were locally-owned, but the chains still keep a portion of the money in the local economy through wages and local purchases.

Logan has a hotel right on the 664 exit.  Here is a website to help start your search for a cabin.  They are very nice.

3 of the top hotels in Athens are/will be locally owned.
