Now we're in that quiet time of year, when Sano and Notestine have the players working their tails off, getting faster, stronger, and in better condition. It's a no-news time of year, so we never hear much. It's been awhile since the S&C staff actually sent out a press release at the close of winter conditioning, but back a few years ago, they used to send out releases like this one. They SHOULD send out releases like that. The players that work the hardest, and achieve awards like Super-Iron Bobcat, or who make other notable achievements in winter conditioning SHOULD be honored publicly.

My guess is that, just as the fans weren't entirely happy with last year, the players weren't either. This year it is also true that an unusual number of younger players ended up playing who weren't entirely ready for the jobs they had to do. Those players now have a measure of where they came up short, and just how much stronger they need to be to get the job done, and just how much better condition they need to be in, if they are going to win the fourth quarters. Thus, I suspect that this winter, in particular, will be one of very hard word in the weight room, and it needs to be.

There is also one type of news I hope not to hear this year. This is also the time of year when the focus and work, combined with the winter setting, seems to tend to lead to off-the field issues.. I remember well January 2006 when, after a disappointing end to the 2005 season, the players worked especially hard in conditioning, but also had an explosion in off the field incidents. I'm hoping we're beyond that now, and have no incidents at all of UAC, brawls, horse punching, etc.
