Looking at the new recruits this year they don't seem like pistol offense players. Maleek looks like a ground and pound runner, duckworth looks like a pocket passer that is a hard runner and the size of lineman are the foundation of a big o line . Personally I would love to get away from the pistol and go under center again .

Sounds like a reasonable hypothesis, Afos.  I also wonder if Duckworth will get some play this fall, in a two-QB system like the one our new QB coach and co-offensive coordinator ran at UT.  No inside info, but like you trying to make some deductions (actually partially inductions) based on the available data.

Duckworth hasn't played football in one and a half seasons. I think a redshirt needs to be coming.  Windham coming back will likely be option two along with Sprague.

There will be a new offensive co-coordinator next year, so definitely I expect some new wrinkles. What they will be I have no idea.

Can someone remind me if Big Ben played his freshman year at Butler County Reformatory?  As I recall, he was injured and played very little if at all his senior year in high school.  Not that I'm saying that Duckworth will be another Big Ben, but I am curious if he played his freshman year.

Ben didn't play HS Quarterback until his senior year. That was the story and why he had only 3 offers Duke, Miami and Ohio State. At the time Miami was a much better landing spot than Duke and OSU wanted him as a backup.

OK, Wes, thanks of the clarification.  I thought he was injured.  It was just a matter that he only started playing QB his senior year. I knew there was some reason that the was "under the radar."  I just forgot the details.

Looking at his video he reminds me of Bates or Vick.  He throws quick passes and runs up the gut instead of hitting edges.  I'd like us to get #5 on the Louisville team.  He looks like a tough kid who runs through people as much as he jukes them.

Roethlisberger did redshirt as a freshman.

Interviewed Krenzel in July.

Running the pistol is pointless if our offensive is a "read-option" where the read is never a QB keeper...

I think Vick is starting this year and I hope he runs more than Tettleton did last year. I hope that players like Daz and Papi give us a nice HB/slot weapon who are used in space to open things up. I really was disappointed we didn't see more jet-sweeps to Daz this year. Felt the creativity in playcalling was lacking...

I've seen crazier things happen.

Miami redshirted Ben and burned the year of another Freshman, Ryan Hawk. The RS year was only Ben's second year of playing QB.

Shotgun is here to stay--perhaps not a pistol line up but still so much of an advantage for a QB vision wise and footwork wise to already be standing several yards deep.  Very difficult to be under center and look to each wideout/left/right and see how the defense is covering them--much better periferal vision capability back a few.  Blitzes are easier to distinguish and side step.

Now I can see in short yardage situations or a quick play that you catch the D looking to the sideline that under center is a distinct advantage--but overal, shotgun all the way!

Most of the college teams I saw this year had at least a few I formation plays they used near the goal line.  Big advantage with a lead back and power running game.  I fail to see why at least a couple of runs and pass plays can't be incorporated into any offense.

The entire reason we lost last year is because we went away from the pistol. Or I should say trying to run it without having our qb run. If our new qb cant run we need to leave the pistol. but I don't understand why we wouldn't just recruit a fast qb and keep the pistol It worked well when we had the right personnel

I'm sure someone will correct me but I do not think Duckworth is a pistol QB...seems to me he was classified as a Pro style guy.

That was my feel of duckworth. It seems like he can run a bit. But reminds me of a pro style as well

From the film I was watching Duckworth seems like a carbon copy of Tettleton but with better throwing mechanics.
