ESPN3 / Watch ESPN and Apple TV

Just updated my Apple TV to the latest software update, and they have added the Watch ESPN app (along with a few others) to the system. I can now watch anything on ESPN 3 through my TV without having to hook up a laptop or my iPad to the TV. I watched some this morning and the quality was better than I got using the laptop or iPad as well.

Not for Apple TV specifically. As long as you can access Watch ESPN on your computer, you'll be able to sign in on an Apple TV. Although Watch ESPN isn't available with every provider.

Kind of. WatchESPN is a service of your television provider, ESPN3 content is a service sold to ISPs. As Tyler said, whatever you get on your computer should be what you get on the AppleTV (which I'm now considering buying for the first time).

Bump....Riddle me this. I have Suddenlink here in Charleston, WV area. I can view programming on my netbook via espn3.com but cannot be granted access on my ipad. Suddenlink does not support the ESPNWatch app. Why cannot I simply watch the espn3.com programming through my browser on the ipad? Any suggestions/advice? I was hoping to get Apple TV to stream from the ipad to the big screen.

That's correct. Plus, the browser defaults to the ESPN Watch app on iPads. I was just able to get access on my iPad because ATT Uverse was just added to the list of approved providers for ESPN. Yes, it was odd that I could watch ESPN3 games on my laptop, but not my iPad.

Google Chromecast just came out. At $35 you will be able to cast anything from your computers browser to your TV. Just ordered mine, can't wait.

I assume you will be able to even cast the OHIOBOBCATS.com basketball broadcasts which really makes this a A++ device.

Interestingly, from the same page, it appears you can get ESPN3 onto your TV with an XBOX and Gold subscription, but that appears to be the only option outside of a true computer (or flash-compatible device, like an Android tablet).

As Tyler noted, Flash support is what keeps your iDevices from working with the traditional website

This is a really interesting device, although I've heard the playback from Chrome tabs can be somewhat iffy, as the video has to be encoded on-the-fly on your device, then streamed (whereas compatible apps, like Netflix, stream the data straight to the ChromeCast). I'd be very curious to hear your experience if you have/get one. I fear lower-end computers (like my 6-year-old MacBook Pro, or even a modern netbook/lower-end laptop) may have trouble getting a good frame rate out of it.

For now, I'm sticking to my tried-and-true old fashioned setup: a DVI-to-HDMI adapter for video coupled with an 1/8" stereo cable into my stereo system.
