Analysis

Strengths Outstanding size -- looks the part of an NFL defensive back with a sculpted physique. Equipped to jam. Has speed to carry receivers vertically. Good zone awareness and ball reactions. Good hands to intercept. Sets the edge in run support. Smart and instinctive. Confident and competitive. Was a productive punt returner and has worked as a gunner.

Weaknesses Tweener traits. Pedals tight. Shows some stiffness in his pedal and transition. Footwork needs to be coached up. Does not explode out of transition or display burst to recover. Average pop on contact. Will be a 24-year-old rookie -- missed two full seasons because of hip and shoulder injuries.

Bottom Line Smoother-than-explosive, height-weight-speed prospect who will draw the attention of Cover-2 teams given his physicality, ball skills and tackling. Special-teams ability adds to value.

Unfortunately, this will be his biggest downfall. (2) surgeries / (2) missed seasons throws up a big red flag as far as draft status goes. As long as he can stay healthy through a training camp he should make a roster.

There are 40 Corners invited to the combine, and it is speculated that about 25-30 of those might get drafted. Here's a Bleacher Report guess at the top 24 and an SB Nation guess at the top 30, and he's not on either list. CBS lists him as the #46 corner, as does TSX. That would make him a likely free agent prospect. Still, the new model in the NFL is bigger corners, and Carrie is one of the bigger ones. With some great performances at the combine he could still get drafted, but we'll have to wait and see.

Not sure how that relates to the 5.4 rating which is described like this:

5.20-5.49 NFL backup or special teams potential

Anybody over 5.0 has a 50-50 chance OR BETTER of making an NFL team.

I found this link to the analysis for all the 39 cornerbacks at the combine. Interestingly, the top 27 rank out this way:
1. Justin Gilbert, Oklahoma State 6.3
2. Bradley Roby, Ohio State 6.0
3. Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State 5.9
4. Jason Verrett, TCU, .75
5. Rashaad Reynolds, Oregon State, 5.65
6. Bashaud Breeland, Clemson, 5.55
7. Antone Exum, Virginia Tech, 5.45
8. Travis Carrie, Ohio, 5.4
    Kyle Fuller, Virginia Tech, 5.4
    Marcus Roberson, Florida, 5.4
11. Aaron Colvin, Oklahoma, 5.38
12.  Russ Cockrell, Duke, 5.36
13. Keith McGill, Utah, 5.35
14. Dontaue Johnson, NC State, 5.32
15. Louchiez Purifoy, Florida, 5.31
16. Stanley Jean-Baptiste, Nebraska, 5.29
     Jaylen Watkins, Florida, 5.29
18. Victor Hampton, South Carolina 5.28
19. Pierre Desir, Lindenwood, 5.27
     Lavelle Westbrooks, Georgia Southern 5.27
     E.J Gaines, Missouri   5.27
22. Kendall James, Maine,  5.26
23. Larmarcus Joyner, Florida State, 5.24
24. Andre Hal, Vanderbilt, 5.23
25. Bene Benwikere, San Jose State 5.22
      Davis, Chris, Auburn,  5.22
27. Bennett Jackson, Notre Dame 5.2

Yes, that's right - Carrie is tied for 8th, so it sounds like his stock is already rising. I'm not sure the guys making the picks will all agree, but it only takes one who agrees and Carrie could be a mid-round draft pick. With a strong performance on the tests, hopefully he'll reinforce his ranking. He's one of my favorite Bobcats, and I'd love to see him get his name called.

Wasn't he supposed to play in a post season game as well and didn't play.  lots of red flags on Travis I'm afraid.

Had a respectable 17 reps in the bench press, tied for 7th.

I know some elite athletes do that, but not sure that it will help Travis unless he was hurt and wouldn't have done well anyway.

I realize injury concerns are an issue, but beyond that does being 24 really hurt him? I could see a guy in his upper 20's being seen as too old to be a rookie, but at 24 he still has time for some football before he is too old and  teams might look at Carrie as a little more mature than other rookies coming in. Again, not counting the injury problems which are obviously an issue.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I would think that because DBs are so replaceable, that drafting a 24 year old who could be just as good or bad as a 21 year old alarms people. It still doesn't really make sense given the average NFL career is like two years and some change.

Skipping out on the combine might hurt him the most. Personally I think he's a great catch NFL team because of he maturity and succeeding in a program on the other side of the country from his home in LA. I would feel confident he could adjust to the pro environment. He's got a chance but it may be like DJ Cooper where he was rated high in some categories but at the end of the day doesn't get his name called.

I hope he still took the time to meet one on one with teams, or is that automatic?

Not sure why he didnt take part but the comparison with DJ is way off.  this kid has theattributes the nfl looks for in a corner.  DJ was way undersized for the nba.

My guess is that he has some nagging injuries that he felt would slow him down, or possibly re-injured something.  That's really the only reason I can think of as to why he would have opted out of the Senior Bowl and out of Combine testing. The injury hurts him, given his history, but bad tests would have hurt him more. If they injury is something like an ankle sprain that isn't going to have any permanent effect on his playing ability, I don't think the decision to test on Pro Day will hurt him too much.
