He may be the last bobcat standing.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Bates just feels like one giant missed opportunity when it comes to his time at Ohio. It's frustrating when you have the best athlete on the field and never quite figure out how to use him to that full potential.

He had the skills to be the best player in the MAC. At what position? I have no idea. Was it anybody's fault that it didn't happen? Doesn't seem like it.

Just two two ships passing by each other silently in the night. Or something poetic like that.

That problem wasn't unique to Ohio. Iowa State, where he was before Ohio, couldn't figure out how to use him. They tried him at QB, and then moved him to Linebacker (the same move Jelani Woseley made at Ohio).  He wasn't happy at linebacker, so he transferred to Ohio, who tried him as a wildcat QB, and at Wide Receiver. Seattle seems to have the same problem, and hasn't been able to find a good way to use him. His future seems to be at Wide Receiver, if anywhere, so I think Ohio was on the right track.

Also, I don't think he's technically "standing" - he's not on the Seattle roster, but is signed to a future contract from what I see.

He's on the practice team which is an achievement none the less...he has a chance to get a Super Bowl ring too.

Michael Robinson of Richmond was a starting QB at Penn State and is now a fullback for Seattle.  Hopefully this bodes well for Phil working his way onto the active roster.

These thoughts made me think of the incredible story of Nate Boyer!

Michael Robinson played fullback at Penn State too, he just happened to take the snaps and occassionally throw the ball.

I realize that Robinson started games at fullback and at receiver, in addition to 17 starts at QB.

In 2005, Robinson completed 162 of 311 passes for 2,350 yards which was the 5th best season in Penn State history and he was a semi-finalist for the Davey O'Brien award.

Sorry, that was an ill fated attempt at humor.  I know he started at QB, in fact he is probably my all time favorite QB at Penn State(I grew up a fan).  My point was that even as a QB, MRob had the mentality of a fullback and didn't shy away from a hit(as in the video)

And to the point of the thread, congratulations to Phil Bates.

Through a mutual friend I know a guy my age who covers the Seahawks for the Seattle Times. When I was out there in November he mentioned to me that Phil Bates "hated OHIO". This was the solicited response when the reporter I know mentioned he knows someone who went to OU. He also added that Phil "loves Frank Solich".

Apparently it's quite common that guys in pro-locker rooms don't look back fondly on the time that was allotted to them at their alma maters.

wasn't the problem less that Iowa State, Ohio and now Seattle have figured out how to use Bates properly but more of Bates allowing the coaches to use him properly? As I remember it he was persistent about wanting to be a QB.

That's an article I'd read with considerable interest.

So, perhaps there is something with OHIO or Athens that keeps us from getting all those 3-star guys?  Academics too hard?  Town too far out in the boonies with no malls?  Other?

There is an Athens mall, it's just a pathetic one. Although Kaiser's is its redeeming quality

The mall thing is a long running gag here on BA. Some years ago a DB that had committed to Ohio changed to Akron, and his reason was "They have malls there".  He never played much for Akron, so Ohio lost nothing on the decommit.

Thanks for bailing me out L.C. that part was tongue and cheek.  Seriously, though, obviously Athens turns some people off, I guess.  me, not so much, I may live in cincy but for four of my formative years I loved Athens and Ohio U.!

Just browsing the NFL transactions and saw that Bates was signed as a free agent by the Seahawks on 2/5.  Great news!! Congrats, Phil.
