Got called for unnecessary roughness on one of the first plays (garbage call IMO) but just forced a hurried pass on a key 3rd down.

He is really a key to this Panther's defense. WR's have to think twice knowing he is out there looking to make a big hit.

I've seen crazier things happen.

If you have watched any NFL football this year, you should know that it was likely that play received a flag.  He has a reputation for doing really stupid s*** and that hit wasnt needed.  was it close, yes, but it wasnt needed and is what the NFL is enforcing this year.

really crappy head to head on the Niners. I agree with the helmet rules and the targeting ....but that is inadvertant contact that will have Golic rolling tomorrow and should actually be visited by the league office to further define the rule.

That said I think D backs that are punks...talking after every missed ball or drop or denial are silly. just play the game....your flappy jaws son;t make you look any better and probably just make the offensive player want to scorch you

I love Mike Mitchell, he needs to do a lot more hitting and a lot less talking. He is a good player, but he does way too much woofing.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Hit was clean.  Hit with his shoulder and he led with his shoulder.  Bad, Bad, call.

He had signed a one-year deal.  Will be interesting to see what they offer him.  They will look to keep him.

Because of the cap, the only way the Panthers can possibly resign Hardy is if they unload Godfrey (and probably J. Stewart).  So scenario works out well for Mitchell.

As much as I hate the Steelers that's a great contract for Mike.  Kind of how I felt when Zastudil got drafted by the Ravens.  It will be fun to watch when he faces the Browns twice a year.

Good for Mike. Get paid.

I hope he loses the next 80 games he plays, but I also hope he plays well.

Great job ESPN ....

Mitchell signed a one-year deal with Carolina after spending the previous four seasons at Oakland, where he started only nine games after being selected in the second round of the 2009 draft out of Ohio State.

I'm a lifelong Steelers and Bobcats fan so this is like a birthday present. Unfortunately it means Ryan Clark is gone...

At least we should get to see him a little more often in this area.  Carolina Panthers games on the tube were few and far between.

Has anyone read how much of this is guaranteed.  Just curious because there is normally just guaranteed money more than guaranteed years in the NFL.

Anyway -- Awesome to see a Bobcat hit it big.  Gonna be great being able to watch so many of his games.

As a Steelers fan - today couldn't get any better. I will get to see every game Mike plays and it will be good to see a Bobcat get a ring.

Here's a good article from the Pittsburgh P-G.  They even got the school right!  Lots of positive comments about Mike.

Ask and ye shall receive:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers bolstered their secondary by signing safety Mike Mitchell to a five-year, $25 million contract, and they did so while putting minimal stress on their salary cap.

Mitchell
Mitchell’s cap hit in 2014 will be just $2.2 million, according to ESPN Stats & Information, and the guaranteed money in his contract is just $5.25 million with $4.75 million of that coming from his signing bonus and a $500,000 roster bonus the fifth-year veteran is due in April.

I included the impending roster bonus as guaranteed money because it would make no sense for the Steelers to release Mitchell less than a month after signing him.

Here is a breakdown of his contract:

2014: $950,000 signing bonus, $750,000 base salary and $500,000 roster bonus. Cap hit: $2.2 million.

2015: $2 million base salary, $2 million roster bonus and $950,000 signing bonus: Cap hit: $4.95 million.

2016: $5 million base salary and $950,000 base salary. Cap hit: $5.95 million.

2017: $5 million base salary and $950,000 base salary. Cap hit: $5.95 million.

2018: $5 million base salary and $950,000 base salary. Cap hit: $5.95 million.

Mitchell’s relatively small cap hit of $2.2 million for 2014 provides the Steelers with some flexibility as they were about $7 million under the cap before signing Mitchell.
