CBS says the ACC will ask the NCAA to do away with the requirement that football conferences must have divisions in order to have a conference championship game.  ACC's concern is that an unranked division champ would knock of a ranked division champ in the title game, hurting the ranked team's chances to get in the NCAA playoff.  They want the flexibility to have the two highest-ranked teams (regardless of conference record) to play for the ACC title.  Even though that situation will likely never occur in the MAC, with the odd number of teams the MAC seems to be destined to have, it may be something to consider as a means for getting rid of unbalanced conference schedules.  Some East teams now play five teams within the division while others play all six.

I don't see how a conference with 12+ teams (ACC, MAC, or otherwise) can do away with divisions and still have a balanced schedule......unless we're going to seriously reduce the number of OOC games (which ain't happening). You'll have the same strength of schedule arguments you have now.

The MAC just needs to get to an even number.....either add someone to get to 14, or drop EMU to get to 12.

You wouldn't necessarily have a balanced schedule (i.e., where everybody plays everybody else).  But where one division is decidedly weaker than the other it gives a team in the weaker division a distinct advantage to play only two teams in the other division every year while some teams in the division play three.

Wow. That thought of Duke possibly beating Florida State really scared the ACC. Better tighten that lid before too much gets out.

That may be true........but it still seems much-ado about nothing. Could you have reasonably argued before last year's MACG that an NIU/Ball State rematch would have been a better conference title game than NIU/BG? Absolutely. Was any serious person going to argue that after the MACG? No. There's the potential to screw over someone in any scenario. At least under the current format, you have a pretty objective standard (win the games you play, beat the teams in your division, etc.) than one based upon poll votes.

EDIT: (I don't think we're disagreeing, btw.....the EMM AYY SEE is a "have not" and the AYY SEE SEE is a "have".......so obviously priorities for arranging a conference championship aren't going to be the same....)

I think they should petition the NCAA that there be only 1 game per year.  The top 2 highest ranked teams in the preseason play the for the national championship the first week of the season.

Would certainly cut down on all these useless games and make sure the best 2 teams play each other.

Letting some external force (rankings) decide who the top 2 teams in your conference are is bizarre to me.

(Unless that would benefit Ohio University.  Then I'm all for it.)

And what's even more bizarre is that starting next season rankings theoretically will mean nothing.  They're pitching the computers and the crazy gyrations and going to a selection committee.  I guess a win over a ranked team will mean more to some than a win over an unranked team but it'll only make a difference if the team is on the bubble to begin with.

The selection committee is going to put out a weekly ranking starting at the end of October. There won't be a vote tally but a consensus Top 25 settled by the 13 members. It will be the two highest ranked teams by the selection committee going into championship week that will play in the conference championship.

As a former season ticket holder at UVA, the ACC like many conferences have all but buried many rivalries or games of interest to particular fans.  I enjoyed Wake coming to Charlottesville every other year and now they come to C-Ville about once a decade.  I don't think Clemson will return until I am eligible for Medicare (not that Medicare will even exist by then).

I would like to see the elimination of pre-season polls. Too much had been determined by polls especially when a game had not yet been played.

In fact, nearly half of last season's pre-season Top 25 teams were not in the Top 25 by the end of the year.

If anything, they should carryover the final poll from the previous season into next season. Even if a ranked team is decimated by graduations/NFL. If you've earned a ranking, it's yours until you lose it on the field.

Then theoretically they could have a team that goes 8-0 in the conference but is 9-3 overall not making the championship game because the selection committee doesn't rank it as high as a team that's 7-1/11-1 and another team that's 7-1/10-2.  It cheapens the conference games.
