They used to do a press release with all the award winners, but they haven't done one in the last few years. I think they should. If they players have been working hard enough to win an award, they should be publicly honored. Also, it gives the fans a bit more appreciation for the fact they even in the "off-season", football players never stop working at getting bigger, faster, stronger, and better.

Not all teams work equally hard in the off season, but the results usually show up on the field come fall.

What interests me is the growth of players we know need to make gains from their recruited stature. I am aware that lifting is evolving by sport. Lifting for strength thru a full range of motion might mean maxs might not be as high as they once were, but, the athlete might produce more.

See Tony Porter below

I am also interested in those who might be popping up from walking on.

I just contacted Dak about this. I would love to see a write-up online that lists the award winners. These boys should be proud of their accomplishments, and the fans should know who is putting in work.

It's not your fault. I am sure they are busy getting ready for Spring practice to start next week, but the hard part is figuring out who deserves awards, which they have already done. The easy part ought to be sending out the press release.  I think a PR on this is very important, though, for the reasons you mentioned:

I wonder if this was something Grooms took care of, and we're already missing him.

No, this is something they have just skipped the last few years.  You have to go back a ways to find one. Here's a release from 2008 where they had 43 winners. I'm pretty sure they did releases most years prior to that, but I'm not sure if one has been done since then.

Winter conditioning and testing is a critical part of the success of programs that remain successful year after year. It requires dedication from the players to go in and work every day, and it is something they do out of the eye of fans, and for which they get little,  if any, recognition. Thus it seems logical to me that those players who do work hard should get public acknowledgement for their dedication and achievements. For the time spent actually writing up a quick one-page release, the good it does seems massively higher.

Edit - The news archive goes back to November 2000. I found no releases prior to 2005 nor after 2008.
2005 Was a national S&C award announcement, not an Ohio S&C awards
2006 - March 23rd, Spring Practice began March 27
2007 - March 21, Spring Practice began March 26
2008 - April 5th, Spring Practice began April 2

No, I wouldn't think so - This is something that will be taken care of by Sano. The school is out for Spring Break. Hopefully they post something soon.

That said, I don't feel that there will be too much of a lapse between Grooms and Chris Rogers. Grooms was great, don't get me wrong. Those are big shoes to fill, but Chris came up in the program, and he knows what is expected out of the position. I think he will fit right in.

With the spring schedule posted, it looks like they will be on a Tuesday / Thursday lifting schedule. The winter awards have changed with the transition to a semester class schedule. I expect more out of the lifting program after spring ball and into summer. This is where the boys will make the most gains.

Congrats on the records and accomplishments.
If only the people writing these articles would proof them, there may be fewer mistakes. The writers are paid for this, aren't they! I make a lot more mistakes, but nobody is paying me.

At least we got the release. The alternative is that, like the last four years, they don't do a release at all.

Congrats to Tim Edmond, and to all the other winners. It looks like quite the competition going at the DL positions. I'm looking forward to seeing Aloese and Porter joining Crutcher, McLeod, Tautuaiki, Purdum, and Davis up front.

I wish there were more OL names on the list, too.

I like the LB results.

The real question is what it means. Awards could be based on how much a player improved over that players prior test results, or they could be based on absolute performance levels on a position by position basis. If the awards are absolute, the absence of offensive linemen isn't surprising since most of them are underclassmen. Also, if the awards are absolute, the DL awards are particularly impressive, since two of the recipients are Freshmen.

The awards seem impressive.  However, if any of you are like me, I just wonder what they look like compared to an Ohio State of Alabama.  Just what is standard for a RB or LB or DL in each category?  Just curious!

Take this with the biggest grain of salt you can find because football isn't measured with bench presses, but Laseak would have tied for 14th place for DL at the combine for 27 reps at 225 pounds. But he weighs about 60 pounds less, so....

That's the problem. The bench presses, etc. are not the end in themselves, but a means to an end, that being to get better as a player. Getting bigger, stronger, and faster can and should make the players better. To me it isn't the absolute numbers, but rather the improvement. If a player is working hard, each year he will progress in terms of the measurables like bench presses, squats, reps, 40 times, etc. You should also see the progress on the field itself, but there the progress is harder to see, sometimes, because the level of competition varies from week to week.

To me the main reason they should do this press release each year is not so much to give information to the fans, because the value of that information is low, but rather because it gives the players who worked hard a pat on the back. Tim Edmond, in particular worked hard, and he deserves kudos for it, as do the other players mentioned in the release.  For the fans, the primary value of the release is as a reminder that these players don't just work hard in August-November; even in the off-season they continue to work, always trying to get better.

The other thing is that, knowing Tim Edmond worked this hard in the off-season, it will give extra reason to pull for him to get some PT this fall, and for hoping he does well.

Guys, I get the physical attributes aren't everything.  Much of any and all sports is heart and schemes/strategy/coaching.  I am trying to get to the question: are we as big, fast and strong as say an OSU or even just a Toledo?  Or, are we far ahead or far behind?  These numbers tell me nothing other than these guys are bigger and stronger than your average 64 year old man

Since I didn't know the answer to your question, I did a web search. On Ohio State, I could only find that they use the stick, not the carrot - if you don't lift hard enough, you have to wear a lavender shirt. I did find some results for SIU and Wyoming, and Ohio is clearly ahead of those. I also found results for Oregon for 2010, and I think Ohio stacks up well. Their preferred measure it to sum the three lifts, and divide by the players weight. Ohio has results for the clean, squat, and bench listed for only 4 players. Computing the ratios you get:
Edmond - 5.13
Russell - 4.58
Powell - 4.23
Aloese - 4.07

Oregon's top player by position were:
Safety - 5.56
RB - 5.45 (Edmond is not too far behind)
QB 5.38
LB 5.04 (Russell is a ways back)
TE 4.89
DL 4.85 (Aloese is well back)
OL - 4.31 (Powell is almost equal)

On an event by event basis:
Oregon's top bench was 405 - Powell had 419, Aloese 408
Oregon's top squat was 500 - Powell had 518,  Blair Brown 504, Dorian Brown, Aloese, and Porter 501
Oregon's top clean was 341 - Blair Brown 335, Donovan 328, McLeod 318, Powell 316

On the whole I'd say that the results are pretty comparable, with an edge to Oregon. Oregon had individual players at every position that top Ohio's players on a pound for pound basis, but Ohio has some individual performances that were better than the best ones at Oregon.
