Congrats to these guys but can someone tell me how Cochran was not selected as a captain.... .   Great student, great leader on and off the field, Media seems to like him,....    I've lost a little respect for this program....

Is it strictly players-only, or are the assistant coaches allowed to vote as well? Or does Solich just pick 4-7 guys? (I don't think it's the last option, but you never know...)

It is a good sign when there are enough captain types that this discussion comes up.  Tim Edmond might be a surprise to some.  I think he was the top lifter this year which reflects leadership by example when the team really needs it.

Something tells me there was a lot of effort and analysis put into this captain selection process, and certainly not a "Solich picks 'em" process.

It's a lot easier to judge leadership after the fact than before it. The captains last  year never seemed to be able to regroup the team. Let's give these guys a shot, and see how they do.

What kind of message does this send to JD Sprague who is still fighting for a starting position?  I have heard this was strictly the "players" vote.  Too bad for Cochran Rowdy...he has certainly been a leader on and off the field and well deserving to be a captain.

How exactly has Cochran shown leadership skills? I know he's a good kid and one of our best players, but how would any of us know if he has the leadership personality a football team needs?

Probably more than the weight lifting, Tim has been willing to play linebacker, tight-end and running back based on what the team needs at that point.

I'm just happy that we limited it to four guys rather than the whole starting offensive and defensive teams!

Thanks, quite a bit more than the lifting.

Players vote on the captains and there is no set number that gets picked. I think basically the coaches take a look at the vote count and usually there are a certain number who separate themselves with the number of votes they get. I'm not sure what the nomination process is like, though. Maybe Cochran didn't want to be a captain.

I guess your right.  We don't know..   However, when I see tweets from Donte Foster indicating this was a huge miss then I would seem to think Cochran was Captain worthy  This was a statement coming from a Captain.    Of all people Donte would have seen first hand.

The good thing is I feel the 4 we have are certainly worthy and I'm sure will do a fantastic job.   I've no concerns with their selection.

Knowing Tim personally he will be a very good captain. Players respect his integrity, do anything for the team attitude, and a true gentleman. He will be the first of his siblings to receive an university degree. Older siblings could not afford a college education. Wonderful how athletics can create an opportunity and that individual respects that opportunity!! So proud of Tim, his work ethic and grabbing that opportunity to be a leader.

I don't think it sends any particular message other than that the players chose Vick as a Captain. While Captains are normally starters, that isn't always true, and in the particular case of the Captains the players selected this year, being a starter definitely doesn't look like it was a core reason for those chosen. Only one of the players chosen, Kristoff, seems virtually certain to start. As for the others:
Vick may or many not start ahead of Sprague
Edmond may or may not start ahead of Patterson
Carpenter may or may not start, depending on whether the Bobcats open in a nickle formation.

That doesn't mean they can't be/won't be fine Captains. I trust that the players had good reasons for the choices they made, and I look forward with hope for an exciting football season ahead.

that was my understanding of the process as well.

Remember in 2009, Brandon Jones was a captain, and he began the year as the 4th-string QB, behind Theo, Boo, and Tyler

Chase just got engaged so being not being elected a captain is probably not the end of the world in his mind at the moment. https://twitter.com/Chase_Cochran/status/469952248102289409/photo/1

If the early Def Coord buys into Chase as a threat life will get easier for Daz.
