Recruiting class of 2015 arriving this weekend

Most of them should arrive on campus this weekend. Some will still have things to work out, but we should soon know many of the players who have qualified. I wonder how long it will be until we get a Fall Roster, which will help us understand the roster changes for fall? Also, I wonder if there is a post-Spring depth chart anywhere? Last year the first time we saw a post-Spring depth chart was in the CFN preview, and perhaps that is how we'll see it again this year. I know there obviously is a depth chart; we just don't know what it is.

The class of 2014 was a very good class, and a lot of them played as true Freshman, particularly on the offensive side, and at DB:
OL -Lowery, McCray, Pruehs (I think Langenkamp may have played, but if so, got his redshirt back)
RB - OUellette (White also played, but got his redshirt back)
WR - Walker, Brunis
DB - Nelson, Brunson

For this fall, we'll see more of the class of 2014 trying to work into the rotation, plus some from 2012 and 2013 trying to work into the order, and true freshmen from 2015 trying to play as well. On the other hand, not many key players are gone, so there aren't a lot of open slots in the play rotation to move up into.

Let's look at who is gone, and who might move up:
1. RB: Edmond - played intermittantly at RB. With him gone there will only be a few more carries for the likes of Patterson, Brown, White, and Irons, who will be trying to get some carries away from OUellette. There is no 2015 RB. The biggest gap Edmond will leave will be in terms of his leadership and enthusiasm.

2. WR: Bradley, Cochran, L. Smith - We'll see more of S. Smith, Reid, Cope, Walker, and Brunis, as well as more of Dixon and Sawyer. Players that haven't played who will be trying to get some PT include Cedric Brown, Jarid Brown (who moved from CB to WR), transfer Tim Helton, Andrew Meyer, plus walkons Grimmard and Marhefka. From the class of 2015, Elijah Ball, Kyle Belak, and Langston Provitt (if he ends up at WR) will also be looking for time.

3. Safety: Kristoff and Ingol are gone, and it remains to be seen if Carpenter will be able to play. Guys that played some last year who will be looking for more time include Quallen, Macer, Devin Jones, Scipio and Toran Davis, and walkon Cunningham. Also, in the Spring the tried moving Kylan Nelson to Safety. Because they were very thin at Safety, there are no returning scholarship players who did not play, but there are definitely guys in the 2015 class who seem likely to step in and play immediately, notably Deontai Williams, Mayne Williams, and Javon Hagan.

4. DT - Gone are Crutcher, McLeod, and Davis. Guys that will get a lot more PT include Purdum, Aloese, Porter, Tautuaiki, plus Sayles who is moving inside at least part of the time. From the 2014 class, Tony Stephens, a walkon who was hurt in preseason last year, and Kyle Kuhar could also compete for time. The 2015 class includes a number of players who may become defensive tackles, but hopefully they can all redshirt. The 2015 players who could end at DT are Arp, McKnight, and Colbert.

5. DE - Kendric Smith is gone, and Sayles is going to be playing some DT in addition to DE. That will mean more playing time for Basham and Laseak, and Berger and Smart will be competing for time. From the class of 2015, we very well may see some new guys playing, including Kevin Robbins, a JUCO, and Colbert or McKnight may play at DE rather than DT.

6. Other: The only one other players with time who are gone are James Alexander, who played sparingly at OLB, Davon Henry, a tight end, and Miles Chapman, the long snapper. Jake Hale is a long snapper in the class of 2015, and he'll compete with walkon transfer Ceth Miller for the long snapping job. At TE, you'd think that 2014 JUCO Brennan Boland, who was out last year with injury, will play some at TE, as will 2014 recruit Connor Brown.

Because of all the true Freshmen that played last year on offense, I doubt any of this year's class will play at most offensive slots. It's possible that one of the linebackers from 2014 or 2015 will get time (DiCillo, Marcus Brunson, Croutch, Taylor, Cloud, and Glasco). At CB Layton, Wells, Bass, Brunson, and Nelson are all back, but if Nelson moves to Safety, that could open some playing time for 2014 recruit Fox or 2015 recruits Howell and Christian, or Provitt, if he ends up at CB.

Conclusions: Almost all of the players from last year are back. Where there are gaps, there are mostly players who are ready to stop up, and there shouldn't be a big dropoff. The places where I see players from the Class of 2015 most likely to step in and play immediately are at long snapper and Safety, plus along the defensive line.

I'm waiting for the Phil Steele College Preview mag to hit the shelves on 7/1.

It's not really an assessment of the overall team. Mostly I was trying to guess where we would see new players filling roles, and in particular, where we might see true Freshmen playing. I see the JUCO DE playing, and then probably a safety, and maybe long snapper. I think all but a couple of the Freshmen will redshirt.

From what I see the following signees are not showing up in the student registry. Take it for what it's worth.

Marques Grimes (????)
London Cloud (Appears to somehow flipped to a Toledo Commit. No idea how that's possible.)
Clayton Glasco (known not to be qualified yet)
Jeff Christian (qualifying issues?)
Deontai Williams (qualifying issues?)
Marcus Brunson (likely just not registered yet as only signed a couple weeks ago)

A couple of the greyshirts also do not show up (Seymour & Zervos)

As for Marques Grimes, his twitter would indicate he's coming.

Christian may be one that has a few things left to take care of, and who will be arriving later this fall.

I didn't find anything new on London Cloud or Deontai Williams, just old stuff that they are Ohio recruits.

The grayshirts don't need to enroll yet. They can't join the team until next January, so I wasn't expecting them.

Maybe Arkley will have an article on the arrival of the Freshmen, and he will give us a clear, or at least clearer, picture.

London Cloud's twitter profile says he is a Toledo commit now and he tweeted to someone that he was going to Toledo now. He's gone. May have been related to the Marcus Brunson signing.

In more strangeness, I found a post on Twitter dated 5/30 from @ubring who is the coach at SUNY/ECC aka Erie Community College that said "Tremendous way to bring our 2015 ECC KAT recruiting class with the addition of LB From Bedford HS - one of the... " and had a link to London Cloud's highlights.

Interestingly, per his twitter, another ECC recruit is another former Ohio commit, someone who was supposed to grayshirt in 2014, Kicker Pierce Royster of Hudson. Royster apparently walked on at Wyoming last year instead of grayshirting at Ohio and I guess that didn't work out for him.

Yes, but was it a for sure thing, or a back up plan, just in case he didn't qualify? It's all been quiet since then, so really, we don't know more now than we did then. Come fall, I expect Deontai will appear either on Ohio's roster, or on Jones County's roster, and then we'll know for sure.

This has been one of the stranger years, as far as having a muddled recruiting picture. Strangest of all is the Cloud situation, who signed with Ohio, then committed to Erie Community College, and now apparently is a Toledo recruit.

According to Arkley, those are not arriving this weekend were Matt Seymour, Jeff Christian, London Cloud, Clayton Glasco and Deontai Williams. Seymour will be here for Fall Camp but the others (except Cloud) are still trying to qualify academically.

The class is not nearly as strong as when it was announced. Three of the top defensive players in the group (Cloud, Christian and Williams) aren't coming. I'm not surprised and yet...I am somehow?

and they all seem to be not coming because of academics, so what's your solution- lower our academic standards or not offer recruits on the edge?

Arkley mentioned in his article in the Messenger today that one our recruits who didn't qualify at Ohio enrolled at Toledo. The implication was that he would play for UT. Does UT have standards lower than OHIO? How much above NCAA minimums are our standards? Anyone know the answers?

To clarify it further, there are two requirements. One is a GPA/Core curriculum requirement, and the other is an ACT/SAT requirement. If a player passes both, he is a qualifier, and eligible to play. If a player passes one, but not the other (say he had a good test, but didn't have an adequate core curriculum, or say he had a good GPA and core curriculum, but did poorly on the test), he is a partial qualifier. If a person completes neither, he is a non-qualifier. Now that they have switched to a sliding scale, the whole "partial-qualifier" term is someone muddled, though.

As I understand it, a partial qualifier can only get aid if they go to JUCO or Division II, so while Cloud can attend Toledo, he can't get an athletic scholarship (though he could still get need-based aid). A non-qualifier can't practice or go to team meetings, but a partial qualifier can, though he has to sit out a full year until he demonstrates adequate academic progress.

More or less then what is happening is Marshall and Toledo view their academics as easy as a Junior College and are letting players who don't meet the NCAA minimum like many of their regular students don't enroll as normal students. It must not account against their APR if the student isn't on scholarship that year. Ohio sounds like its going the more responsible route by pushing the partial qualifier to a JUCO where they can get some aid and a better chance at succeeding academically.

And this gets us back to our buddy up north. Are PJs 3 -star recruits mostly partial or non qualifiers? If they are qualifiers how is this guy doing it? It just seems like a bunch of the top guys we offer never see campus. So, even those classes that look good on paper end up not being so good. Just wondering...
