The D did not do all that badly last year. They held the opposition to 24 points or fewer in 9 of 12 games, which would ordinarily make us at least 9-3. They gave up 21 pts vs NIU, which put up 52 on BG. There are some things to improve on, like pressuring the QB and covering deep balls vs really good receivers. But I'm not sure the D could do much better overall.

84% of our arm-chair analysts do expect the 2015 defense to show improvement for a second year. Are we any better than the Sports Illustrated writer who picked Cleveland to win the World Series? I hope so.

I'm a believer the talent level is as good as ever on defense. The reason why Ohio doesn't lead the league in all MAC guys has to do with having more depth instead or relying on one or two studs like Buffalo had back in 2013 that saved the day for them.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

RS FR Bryan Dicillo will see action this fall. Big MLB from outstanding program at Wash Jesuit. Could possibly unseat the incumbent backup at MLB.
Coach Ron Collins should get some props for his work with our great group of LBs

Because of both 1 & 2

1 because there should be upgrades at strong and free safety

2 because after a year of practice the corners will now lock it down!

Along with DiCillo I expect Marcus Collins to add quality depth.

Let me throw this out and see if you agree. LBs are getting to be role players. In or out depending upon down/distance and field position. Who does Ohio have that would never leave the field?

I don't think role players by any means, I think that certain offenses have put them in a situation where they can't be on the field for three downs unless they can cover a tight end who may be flexed or run with a back or slot receiver. Most can't some can.
In OUr case I don't think the Ohio defense has ever had three guys who can turn and run like these three starters. I think both Johnson and Poling can play every down and Brown may have that potential but I haven't seen enough. I will say he has played the run very well so far.

As long as the defensive line can keep the offensive line away from them, I think all three are every down players. If the defensive line can't, they may need a bigger guy for MLB on running downs. Since we don't know anyone's real weight, though, it's impossible to know who might be "bigger" than Poling. The only linebacker that looks to fit that "bigger MLB" mold based on the weights on the roster (which are not accurate anyway) is Chalmer Frueauf, at 6-3 235.

I agree that our 'backers should be good.

I still think, until decisively proven otherwise, that our D is limited good ('doesn't lead the league') because we haven't had an absolute stud, first-team all conference guy for a while (in partic at d-line). Applies to offense, also.
