SECOND SCRIMMAGE 8-18

Sounds as if the offense sputtered a bit today and had 4 turnovers according the Arkley's twitter. Scrimmage was only 50 plays so not sure who got the reps at QB and other key positions.
Were any BAers there that can offer details?
Arkley promises more details later. What would we do without him?

Without him, probably Ted would get his camera back out and do a few interviews. With Arkley, though, Ted has gotten spoiled, and can spend his time on other things. (Just kidding, Ted.) ;)

Arkley's summary of today's scrimmage is up. One interesting comment. The Ohio team thinks it may have the best defense in the MAC this season.

I am real positive on both the "D" and special teams.
Worry fills my mind on the "O". No QB appears to be playing at a high level on a consistent basis. This is deja-vu, 2014 replayed.
Coach will probably we alternating for the 1st few games.

Wish I could get it to "apples to apples." Just not the info out there. The coordinators/captains might try to get a competition going between the squads. Targets being 6.1 & 18.1. Squad which does the best gets to watch the losers run lines. I know these guys are already motivated, but, I like it when the offensive & defensive captains control something like this.

I have tried to piece Arkley's information together by starting with the format, and then filling in the details in the appropriate places:
1. Two 2-minute drills at the start (9 plays total)
Sprague missed several open receivers during this segment, and drive was killed by a holding call

2. 10 plays, Second team offense versus First Team Defense
Windham nearly drove the field, starting with a 30 yard run, and including a 22 yard throw to Belack and a 12 yarder to Marhefka. Once they got to the 1 yard line, Blair Brown stuffed a run, Marhefka had a procedure penalty, and then Bass got an impressive leaping interception, covering Marhefka in the corner of the endzone.

3. 10 plays, first team offense versus 2d team defense
Vick drive, offense moved the ball, but slowly. Drive ended after 10 plays, after gaining a first down at the defense's 30. Series included a fine throw by Vick with a leaping catch by Sebastian Smith for a 13 yard gain.

4.10 plays, third team offense versus 1st team defense
The first team Defense totally destroyed the 3rd team offense, as you would expect. First Carpenter had a pick of Vick on a deep route. Then Grillot hammered Bo Hardy, causing a fumble that was recovered by Nelson. Then Basham sacked Vick. Brown netted -5 yards on 3 carries in this section.

5. 10 plays, first team offense versus 3rd team defense
This would have been Sprague running the offense. The first team again moved the ball slowly, drive ended after 10 plays without scoring or turnover

6. 10 plays, 3rd team offense versus 3rd team defense
Duckworth threw a 75 yard TD to Marhefka. Grant Cunningham had an interception of Maxwell during this segment.

Windham had 10 plays, Vick 20, Sprague 19, and Duckworth and Maxwell had 5 each.

As far as sacks, tfls, by the defensive line, Basham had a sack on Vick, while Smart had a near sack of Windham, hit Sprague once as he was throwing, and and a tackle for no gain on Dorian Brown. The entire defense stuffed a lot of runs, though.

Piecing together some stats:
Vick 8-10-1 for 52 yards
Sprague 4-9-0 for 38 yards
Windham 3-5-1 for 42 yards
Maxwell 2-3-1 for 13 yards
Duckworth 2-4-0 for 79 yards

OUellette: 1 carry for 7 yards (bowling over Provitt, who did hold on for the tackle)
Irons: 6 yards on 5 carries
Brown: 5 yards on 4 carries
Patterson: 30 yards on 5 carries

Marhefka 2 catches, 87 yards
Patterson 1 catch, 12 yards
S. Smith 3 catches, 30 yards
Belack 1 catch, 22 yards
Walker 2 for 25 yards
Reid at least 1 catch
9 other catches for 48 yards total

From reading the stuff re-arranged to see the context, my thoughts are:
1. Windham continued to be impressive, leading the best drive of the day using the #2 offense against the #1 defense. I sure hope we get to see him some against Idaho and beyond.
2. The #1 offense wasn't stopped, and moved the ball consistently, but slowly, albeit against the #2 and #3 defense. That is good in two ways - the starters can ground and pound, and the defense is deep.
3. I'm thinking we may see Marhefka quite a bit this year. He seems to be up to #2, and playing well.
4. The defensive line depth seems to be good - even against the #2 and #3 defense, no one had a running field day

It almost tells me that the 1/1a QB's/offense were running what might be the typical offense, ground and pound, while the 2/3 QB's/offense were testing a more open playbook to test the D (secondary in particular) in different ways that the 1's were. I have no knowledge of that, but my spidey sense tells me that...just by reading the tea leaves.

In it you can see some of the plays discussed above:
1. a nice catch by Walker, who puts a move on Dougherty and Brently
2. Bass's pick on a pass attempt from Windham to Marhefka. It was just a great defensive play, not badly thrown ball.
3. Vick's throw and leaping catch by Sebastian Smith (of interest, note that the completion was thrown against a zone blitz, with Moore rushing, but picked up, and DE Kent Berger back in coverage).
4. A Windham throw to Brunis, who goes high to catch it, then is hit by Toran Davis.
