Defensive Play of practice: FR LB Evan Croutch picked off Joey Duckworth on a late throw back over middle. Got good depth on his zone.

Anything you hear, please share.

Offensive play: Duckworth dropped in a beauty on a deep corner to Robbie Walker. Sprague also looked quick, fast. More so than last year

RB Papi White looked smooth. Ohio's offense has another needed weapon with him available. Sharp cutting dynamo

First looks of freshmen Mayne Williams (S) and Marcus Brunson (LB). Both have excellent size for their positions for 1st year guys

No pads for 3 days, so hard to get good gauges on individuals. But frosh QB Quinton Maxwell a legit 6-3, tallest QB on roster now

DT Brandon Purdum held out today, no update on his status. Only familiar face I noticed today who was held out

The safety position may be a lot more solid than was expected.

2 nice defensive plays: 1) DE Kurt Laseak with INT; leapt up while working on RT as Vick tried to throw swing pass. Clean catch, impressive
2) S Nate Carpenter shed a block from TE Connor Brown on the edge to stuff potential big play from Irons on another swing pass.

RB Maleek Irons showed great burst on several carries. He, Dorian Brown and AJ Ouellette all have strong-looking frames (every down types)

3rd year soph Zack Murdock at G. Looking thicker, sturdier than in previous couple of seasons. Came to Ohio off knee injury

OL notes: Joe Anderson out for 2nd straight day, Jared McCray and Marques Grimes also watching only 2day. Jake Pruehs working at C and G

I like Holliday, but don't understand why bring in a guy kicked from Ariz. St. for domestic violence a month ago

Course I know why (5-stars). But for a program that kicked 1 guy off in the offseason for an alleged hate crime it's an interesting move

DL Casey Sayles looked good. Several impact plays, would've had 2 sacks during team portions today. Could see him playing A LOT at DT

Others missing today (not believed to be serious): OL Joe Anderson, Marques Grimes, Mike Lucas, S Corey Quallen, TE Mason Morgan

DT Brandon Purdum will out for a couple weeks. Still recovering from offseason surgery. S Maxwell Howell (calf strain) also out for a bit

Shoulderpads on for the first time today. More popping, more contact. Also fairly warm, several players feeling effects of it as well

First look at TE Keith Heitzman. Natural blocker, throwback type. Nifty chip/release footwork, seems to be his niche

QB Greg Windham keep getting better. Nice rhythm throws in team portion, including sharp pass to Herman Brunis on a comeback

DT Andrew Payne, LB Bryan DiCillo got some looks with 1s on defense this morning. I'm liking Ohio's depth at both CB and LB

New DE Kevin Robbins certainly looks the part. Was dragging just a bit today, as was Tarell Basham. Adjustment period for a lot of guys

No big plays down the field in the team portions today. Lots of focus in early days on installation; basic runs, constraint plays (screens)

Top 3 sort of set with Cope, S. Smith and Reid. Lots of intrigue after that.

During Spring they moved Howell and Nelson to Safety. With Carpenter and Scipio practicing, it will be interesting to see if they move Howell or Nelson back to CB, or redshirt them.

Per Arkley's blogpost yesterday, Krizancic, Amicone, and Fruehauf are not on the 105 man roster this fall.

And per Arkley's tweets, it sounds like the QB situation (a) might be a three-horse race, and (b) might not be settled until after the non-conference portion of the season.

Re:qb. Somewhat surprising. First that Vick hasn't cemented his position yet
And also that Windham is legitimately in the mix.

Are they on the student registry?

Also in 1-on-1, S Nathan Carpenter had an INT when he cut in front of a TE cross. Another DB note, Maxwell Howell has settled in at CB

In 1-on-1 portions, S Javon Hagan made a diving INT and later knocked another pass away while locked up with TEs

WR Cedric Brown had a TD in the RZ portion, nice throw from Duckworth to the post. Later, Randall Stites had a big gainer on tunnel screen

One young defensive player stood out a bit today. DE Keith Key had a QB hurry and tipped a screen pass. Good length for coming off edge

Brendan Cope had several catches in team portions. And each of the top 3 QBs had moments. More hits than misses

Brunis had the catch of the day. In red zone, he picked a catch off the back of a DB for TD on a 50/50 ball from Windham.

Drops marred early reps (Patterson, Walker and Brunis). Greg Windham did find Papi White for long TD down left sideline

Still no full contact, which hurts some in evaluating RBs, LB, linemen. More deep shots down field in team portions today

Turnovers were both QB/RB fits on read plays. Duckworth/Patterson on the first, Vick/Irons on the second. Sack result of missed RBI pick up

Four team segments today, about 48 plays. Equal reps for QBs and at most positions. 2 turnovers, one clear sack allowed

Yes, all three are in the registry and all are on the current full roster. They may just be left out currently due to the roster restriction.

Yes, during season they have about 110-120 on the roster, but during Fall camp they are only allowed to have 105. Therefore, a few of players that they think aren't likely to play during the current season aren't in Fall camp. As soon as classes start, they rejoin the team.

Relatively minor confrontation, and a common camp occurrence. Both groups piled in quickly. Everyone had everyone's back, etc.

And Ohio had its first scrap today. RT Troy Watson and DE Tarell Basham got into it during during 1-on-1, OL vs DL.

Counted 5 would-be sacks in team today, three from LB blitzes. Sayles/Laseak met at QB another time. S. McKnight got a gimme on low snap

One turnover in team portions. S Toran Davis with a diving INT on an intermediate crossing route. Safeties need to make more plays this year

Ohio wasn't sharp offensively in team segments this morning. A lot of drops, plenty of QB pressure as D showed more blitzes.

Two freshmen DL (Keith Key, Brian Arp) have acclimated well so far. Key a handful in space off edge; Arp a good plugger on the interior

DE Kevin Robbins (dehydration issues) sat out again this morning. No movement on some of the longer-term guys (Purdum, Howell, Anderson)

OG Mike Lucas (ankle) back in the mix some today as well. FS Nate Carpenter was off (no new issue). WR Herman Brunis (knee) off today too

Good news (all things considered) for OT Jared McCray. Solich said he suffered a "sprain" on Monday. He'll be out a few weeks, not months

From his blog:
Arkley wrote:
Lots to like about the young talent Ohio has in place defensively. CB Langston Provitt and Howell give the Bobcats two corners with real size for the future. Safeties Javon Hagan and Mayne Williams both have the apparent physical maturity to be able to play right away. On the DL, DT Brian Apr and DE Keith Key have shown well (in my opinion). Arp is a good plugger inside and shown a willingness to mix it up. Key is still thin, but his reach and first-step off the edge has been tough for Ohio’s tackles to handle in space.

We expected that the class of 2015 would be the defense of the future. Even without Christian, Cloud, Glasco, and D. Williams, this seems to have been accurate, as many of them keep appearing in Arkley's blog. Here is the full group:

CB - Provitt, Howell
S - Mayne Williams, Hagan
DT - Arp, McKnight, Colbert
DE - Key, Robbins
LB - Croutch, Taylor, Brunson

Christian appears to be at Ohio Dominican, and might be able to transfer up at some point. Glasco is at Jireh Prep, and could end up part of the 2016 class. D. Williams is probably going to Jones County Junior College, and could be eligible for recruiting again in 2017 or 2018.

I do think that there is one True Freshman that will be a starter from day one, and that's Jake Hale, the long snapper. Whenever there is a clip of Bonnstetter, Farakas, or Yaz, the person snapping is always Hale, and his snaps always look perfect.

Ohio FB: Aug. 12 report. FR. OL Austen Pleasants getting reps with 2s, and other notes http://www.athensmessenger.com/blogs/bobcat_blog/ohio-fb-...

More to come in the blog update, hit me with questions. Friday's scrimmage will be a big barometer to set up roster for rest of camp

Special teams starting to take shape (returns). Patterson, Bass, White, D. Brown, Irons, Walker and Provitt all options in that area

QB battle: I had Sprague slightly ahead of Vick in my notes for today. Those 2, and Windham, getting bulk of reps in team sections

Asked OC T. Albin today who had the edge, Dorian Brown or Maleek Irons, as every-down backup to Ouellette. "Ask me after Friday (scrimmage)"

RB depth looks like this. AJ Ouellette is the No. 1. Patterson/White are used alot in 2 back groupings. Irons/Dorian Brown backing up AJ

WR Brendan Cope on the good side of a lot of nice plays today in the team portions. Hauled in a fade from JD Sprague for PotD honors

Coal Grove OL Austen Pleasants came to camp in good shape. Now getting reps at RT (backup) with McCray out.

DE K. Robbins back in the mix today. And nothing new on the longer-term guys (Purdum, Howell, McCray, Dixon, etc.)

New guys sitting out today: S K. Nelson, LB E. Croutch, TE T. Mangen, OT B. Dudziak. Quallen and Poling with another day off.

Quick notes on today: No turnovers or long touchdown plays in team portions. I believe that a first of fall camp

Ohio FB: Another practice report going online in a bit. 1 practice for Bobcats today, two on Thursday, first scrimmage on Friday

Bowling Predictions on Aug. 12? Jerry Palm brings it. Has 7 MAC teams in bowls, including Ohio vs BYU in Hawaii http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/bowls/predictions
