There has been much discussion of on this board about the haves and the have nots getting further apart, but if the MAC and other G6 conferences are struggling to tread water the FCS teams are suddenly sinking to the bottom of the ocean with cinder blocks on their feet.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50043527...

Kicking around the idea of requiring P4 teams/Notre Dame having to play 10 P4 opponents a year and eliminating FCS games for ALL FBS team. G6 would only be able to schedule against each other or fill 1 of 2 open slots on a P4 schedule.

I read this as P4 teams would still be allowed FCS teams, and only G6 teams would be required only FBS games.

Some I have seen on social media are interpreting it as no FCS opponents for anyone in FBS, but either way that is very bad for FCS. There was just another post on here about us paying Towson $450k to play us. Even just eliminating 70 G6 teams from the pool is a huge decrease in payouts for FCS schools.

It's becoming a roundabout way of telling the G6 Conferences they're going to be shut out from the CFP entirely in the future. How is it possible for G6 schools to schedule enough P4 opponents to satisfy this clown show committee?

As much as people don't want to discuss it, a separate tournament for the G6 is the only light at the end of the tunnel if we get cut off.

Seems like it's still pretty ambiguous. This is from the posted link and sounds very speculative:

Quote:

In the Group of 6 conferences, it's getting increasingly difficult for those schools to line up even one nonconference game against a Power 4 team. CFP leaders could consider a requirement to eliminate FCS opponents, so Group of 6 teams play only FBS-level teams.

I don't love when Ohio State pummels Grambling, but this has long been a revenue source for smaller schools and eliminating them, as always, is done with only the tip top of the P5 in mind.

It not only gives them a cash source, but a chance for some of these kids to get tape or just the once in a lifetime experience of playing in a massive stadium on national tv.

Yep, 100% correct. I've been saying it for a while now, but over the last couple of years FBS schools suddenly had to start sharing a substantial portion of their revenue with athletes.

That was always going to lead to them looking at every possible way to increase revenue. And TV revenue is far and away the biggest source of revenue for most schools. They're going to optimize for that and an expanded playoff and more P5 nonconference games does so. Playing buy games doesn't.

I believe G6 teams will round-robin schedule each other rather than just schedule P4.

I see a lot of people speculating that they are trying to shut G6 teams out, but honestly when have we ever had a better shot at making a national championship game than now? We had a 0% chance at making it in the BCS era. Two G6 teams made it into the playoff last year and a 24 team playoff will only make that more likely. Also makes picking up a win in the playoff more likely.

I can get the argument from a resources stand point with how wide open the NIL era has become, but that could be changing again soon.

Honestly, as long as the top ranked G6 team can get in the regular CFB playoff I would not be opposed to a G6/NIT type second football tournament. How much do you usually care about random bowl games that don’t include us? Imagine how entertaining it would be winning a tournament trophy at the Pop Tarts Bowl.
