Per On3's Brett McMurphy, Miami has explored joining the American Conference. Miami reportedly offered between $30-$40 million to join the league.

Who can blame them, if true? Our league and commish have ZERO vision. Steinbrecher's salary ($800k+) is an abomination.

And was told no. Same response to UCONN (football only) and James Madison. Yes, the MAC is on its last legs but the rest of the country still looks at the league members as sorry saps.

Miami is spending and going for it. Good for them.

I don't see OU or its donors being able to do the same. We had some headlines when we made it known we'd be interested in a conference move but... no news since then.... We don't seem to have the $ to increase athletics spending to what a better conference would want to see....

According to the below link, Ohio's athletic budget was $36 million in 2025. An average Sun Belt's is $46 with a James Madison at $78! So Ohio will have to come up with a large entrance fee, plus boost annual spending by I'd say at least $12 million to stay mid. Where the heck is that coming from?

I'm not surprised that Miami would stick their noses out for this.

If we want to keep up with them competitively, we need to make our own move when the right time comes. Sun Belt or whoever else...

We don't have a $40 mil entrance fee to offer up, plus another $12-15 mil annually. Being in the same league as Tarleton State and Missouri State ain't gonna have folks burning through their 401k's & life savings.

Western, UT, Rich Kids are the only OG MAC schools that can play the future FBS game.

I've been told by someone who has had money raising responsibility at Miami and Ohio that it's night and day when speaking w alumni. At Miami, alums are very open to opportunities to contribute. At Ohio, alums say they love the school because of the great times they had here (weekends) but won't even consider ponying up more than $100. Sad but true.

James Madision though would be the one departing and if they left that brings the average down to 43.5 million. From what I know the Sun Belt doesn't require a certain minimum level of budget to participate. The Mountain West has it in North Dakota St's contract that if they don't win they must increase their budget until they do. AAC has minimum NIL requirement and I believe 40 million is their floor allowable budget.

During the pandemic when Ohio was struggling financially these concerns would have weighed more heavily. The university has turned it around with record freshman classes and largest graduating class in history last year. I recently read the university has recently put out a bid to modernize lighting at Peden and The Convo. Stand Up for Ohio Football campaign was launched this year so its not as if the university isn't in a position to make a push in athletics.

I don’t see any Conference that makes sense for a MAC team to move to. What do you want to be…an NIU traveling by plane all over the place? We may not like the current MAC but it makes more sense to improve it than move. The $$$ just is not there.

The stark reality is that the MAC is likely going to see those who can get out leave before 2030 and be faced with the very real possibility that they have to move down to FCS within a decade.

I just hope we don’t get dragged down with it.

^ And that's the main reason why you'd want Ohio to leave the MAC. No disrespect to the FCS, but OU doesn't do all this work all these years just so we wind up in the FCS.

Let’s have a poll….Is Ohio closer to FCS or the top 20?
The only rational move is for schools like Ohio to develop a new division of play with their own championship. We will never compete with the Ohio States and all the money they throw at football to win the national championship.
