Seahawks news: Ex-Seattle RB somehow enters NCAA transfer portal after runs at SMU, UCLA appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The NFL is witnessing a first among undrafted rookies and the NCAA. Already Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge rusher Jack Pyburn drifted into the College Football Transfer Portal Wednesday. Now Seattle Seahawks running back and former UCLA and SMU football star TJ Harden is following suit.

Harden is joining a new movement thanks to the newest NCAA fifth-year eligibility rule released in early August. College football insider for On3 Pete Nakos revealed Harden's intention to re-test the portal waters. Once again he joins Pyburn and others following a new Louisiana judge order on the fifth-year eligibility case.

Very good chance we see this fall a team essentially signing a "free agent" midseason. They suffer some injuries and go and get a guy that was cut by an NFL team last week but only played 4 years in the NCAA.

At the same time NFL players are eligible for returning to NCAA roster limits are in place at 105 players. The net effect is going to push more talent down to smaller programs. Less roster spots for a player to transfer up to.

The team would have to remove the injured player from the 105 roster if they were going to do so.

Congress can and must act to stop this madness!

Also, I'm waiting for the IRS to revoke the non-profit status from a college that's running a pro-football team. First such school will probably be a private college. Watch out Notre Dame!

And, some accrediting agencies might start pulling accreditation from schools that make a farce of athletes actually paying any attention to academics.

The implications of all of this wild-west football are yet to be realized.

Unless they are carrying a roster of 104 at the time thru someone recently quitting or something, or they just didn't use each spot from the beginning.

*Sniff, sniff*

Smells like NFL2 and minor league systems on the horizon. Top 32 teams from FBS break off and form their own minor league and feeder system into the NFL. The rest of the FBS and FCS gets chopped up and feeds up to NFL2, etc. etc. etc. Player transactions happen all the time with no set calendar, getting called up or being sent down on a random Tuesday and playing for your new team by that same weekend. High schoolers are treated more like baseball prospects.

In case you've been missing the news there is a congressional bill in the works that would prevent the scenario above.

Quote:

Ban on conference mergers. Bans conferences with annual revenues of over $700 million from consolidating or acquiring other conferences’ assets unless the number of institutions in the new conference created includes at least 75% of the FBS membership, or if the new conference does not exceed 19 schools. Prohibits any entity (including private equity entities) from consolidating assets/media rights of a Power 4 school for the purpose of creating a new
conference.

This hasn't passed yet but its a pivot away from the idea there will someday be a small group splitting away. Also in that legislation is that any coaching compensation above $500k for an individual coach must come directly from athletic department revenues or donations if the athletic department budget is over $80 million.

I've been following this and I'll just say I'll believe it when I don't see it. This says nothing about individual schools deciding if they wanted to break away and do their own thing. All of this realignment isn't being controlled by the schools and conferences anyway, as ESPN and FOX are pulling the strings in the background. They're the ones who would start something.

It says no entity can cherry pick individual schools to create a superconference. The SEC and Big Ten had a heavy hand in developing this legislation with increasing input from the ACC and Big 12. I would put the odds at this passing at 90%. A 32 super conference I'd have set at 0.1% because if its not this bill it will be something else next year and a 32 team super confernce even if the conferences decided to stop working together would be quite radical change. College football has always been incremental change historically.

NFL to NCAA? Courtroom chaos Is giving pro athletes a bizarre path back to college, and it's only just begun
A Louisiana judge opened a makeshift transfer portal for seven days as lawsuits pile up against the NCAA nationwide
By Trey Wallace OutKick

This situation is only going to explode. It is not going away. The lawsuits/appeals will go on for months.
