Preseason poll released today. Cats tied with San Jose State at #40 with 8 votes.

Was hoping L'ville would be top 5 or 6. At #9 they might feel slighted and think they have something to prove on 9/1.

Yes, higher than Cincinnati. We are in 40th place with 8 votes. The Bearcats are tied for 43rd place with 3 votes.

The MAC has 4 teams earning points, while CUSA only has 2... and those 2 (Tulsa & ECU) are saying goodbye after this year.

Starting 2013 at #40 w/8 votes and playing the #9 team is a huge opportunity. With Marshall getting extra hype this year a 3-0 start will be much more difficult than last year, but if we achieve it the votes in the polls will be much better as well.

Could 4-0 and a bye week in week 5 put us in the Top 25 going into MAC play?

Are you guys primed to win the MAC Championship this year. Did you
injuries that set you back last year?

Last year the injured included:
Offense - 4 starters, 5 significant backup, and 3 reserves
Ryan McGrath - starting RT
Vince Carlotta - Starting LG
Jordan Thompson - starting TE
Mario Dovell - starting WR
Derek Roback - backup TE
Sam Johnson - backup RG
Ryan Boykin - backup RB
Landon Smith - backup WR
Sebastian Smith - backup WR
Matt Pritchard - reserve OL
John Tanner - reserve OL
Josiah Yazdani - reserve K

Defense - less total players, but all 7 were starters
Carl Jones - starting DT

This does not count players like Tettleton (QB) that missed a game and returned, but played hurt. When you lose 11 of your 22 starters, and 16 of your top 44, that is not going to help you have a good season. It does create an interesting situation where they have 4 returning starters at CB this year, and 3 returning starters at safety. If you count the returning starting nickle back, Ohio has 8 returning starters at DB, and not many can say that.

Cinci might have a worse schedule than Ohio. Only 3 teams with a winning record last year, and none of them show up on the schedule until November. If Ohio beats Lville in week 1 Cinci won't be able to catch the Bobcats in the polls if both teams keep winning.

And, at the time WE PLAY Louisville (Week 1), no other team on their schedule will be ranked as high as we are in the USAT poll

With the preseason votes Ohio has received votes in a major poll for 5 consecutive seasons. Its the first time Ohio has received preseason votes since 1969 the year after our last MAC Championship.

I'm gonna guess if we do beat Louisville we should be top 25 after 2-0 or 3-0 (if we beat them, we shouldn't lose any games IMO)

We beat Louisville and we are in the top 25 at 1-0. This isn't last year. We are a known commodity to the polls now. Louisville enters the season in the top 10. Win and we're in. The Penn State win was one of the most awesome experiences of my football watching life, but they were not ranked.

Yes, it was the worst I have ever seen, and it isn't surprising that what was a promising start to a season kept sliding downhill. The injuries didn't happen all at once, but just kept coming. Almost all were season ending injuries, and the list doesn't include the players that had nagging injuries, or that may have missed a game or two. Even with the gap to the bowl game, only 3 of the players were able to return, Tremayne Scott, Neal Huynh, and Gerald Moore, and all three had a big impact.

Many of the non-seniors on the list missed Spring ball, too, but should be ready to go this fall.

BTW, my error, John Tanner is a TE, not OL.

As for the timing of the injuries, from my recollection:
Carrie, Sebastian Smith, and Tanner were all hurt pre-season. Shaw was hurt in the first half against Penn State. Dovell and Landon Smith were hurt in the next couple games. Gerald Moore was, too, but tried to continue to play. Hughes was suspended the first 2 games, and played one game before being hurt. I think Roback also missed the bulk of the season. Pritchard and Yazdani were hurt fairly early as well, but neither were likely to play anyway.

That gets us to the stretch run, when things started to go downhill. That's about when Jordon Thompson went down along with the defensive line trio of Jones, Huynh, and Scott. Thompson was lost for the season, but all three defensive linemen played a bit after that, but far less than usual, and all weren't nearly as effective, until the Independence bowl, when all three returned, and had significantly more impact. Ryan Boykin also went down during the stretch run, missing the losses to Ball State and Kent, as well as the bowl.

The offensive linemen of McGrath, Carlotta, and Johnson were all fairly late injuries, I believe, but I'm not sure on that.

Even though he only missed one game it was nagging the whole rest of the regular season and you could see in the bowl game with him healthy how it had negatively affected how he was able to play. If he had stayed healthy even with all the other player injuries I think our offense would have beasted us to at least 2-3 more wins.
