Looks like the team gets a little Fall competition, taking on the Bahamas All-Stars on September 1.  Sweet!  It may be that some of the tab for the trip was picked up externally.  Sounds like a diplomatic  mission.

Maybe their appearance in the Ohio State House a few months ago made them politically and diplomatically savvy.

An outstanding benefit of this trip is that the team is allotted 10 additional practice days. I think the first one is today.

My understanding has always been that incoming freshmen are not allowed to make these summer international trips.  But I noticed that in UK's tour of Canada, their incoming freshmen are playing.

Could anyone clarify this confusion for me?  And, how many players will be on the roster for the Bobcats?

Today was the first day of practice. Director of Basketball Operations Aaron Fuss is the person to follow on Twitter for practice updates:

Today is the day we have been waiting for all summer! Practice begins! Really excited to see the newbies in action! #bobcats

Practice #1 in the books! Getting better!

Jeff, I dont see or remember anything in the 09-10 manual regarding this issue. It is my understanding that as soon as they get to campus and start practicing (as long as they are a qualifier), they can participate in exhibition contests like this as freshmen.

Jeff you are correct that the rule used to exclude incoming freshmen for non-continential, however that rule has been changed to include freshmen.

Jason Arkley was at this morning's practice and tweeted some quick thoughts:

First look for me at some of the new 'Cats this AM. E. Jacobs - Thin, not skinny. Can run the floor. Big wingspan, true center length

R. Johnson -- decent size and length as a 2/3. Quick first step, explosive ups. TJ Hall -- Taller than Johnson at 6-5, smooth and fluid.

Hall reminded me of Coleman (game wise) ironically. Nick Kellogg -- Like his brother and father, has broad shoulders. Solid build.

Jeff said international and you said non-continential, so I are you implying that there is a distinction?  I only ask because the two examples mentioned happen to be in this continent.

The NCAA rules have usually used the term non-continental.  I think we many times associate that with international.  Some examples, if you play football in Hawaii you get an extra game.  For years an appearance in one of the "pre-season" basketball tournaments was extra, and in the summer, travel outside of the Continental U.S. has led to extra games and practice time, only in the past several years have freshmen become eligible to participate in these trips.

According to Mr. Fuss the game is on for tonight: "On the bus! #bahamas here we come! Playing the Y West All- Stars Monday night!"   So what is the score?  Some creative internet searcher must have found a Bahamian radio staion broadcasting our Bobcats!

Must have been an interesting game.  They played FIBA rules with a 24 second clock.  D.J. fouled out and played only 15 minutes.  I thought Bahamian refs would be real laid back.  Not so!

I have yet to read what others are replying of your question about "legality" of playing overseas. but . .i think that is one of the reasons why a team can get that extra time away"leagally"... dont get me wrong . Things have really changed over the last several years...   I would also like to here if anyone knows anything ... I remember when Ohio football played Ball St. in football ...In Tokyo and think it was  around 1992 ish with Lichtenburgh ..  I was still in middle school.. but I played watched little Tommy at Athens and he  was recruited to play at Notre Dame .  no bulll crap.  I graduated with Ben Grobe in 1997. Anyway I think the "newbies" are elligble to play as long as the boys are registered for classes.

The Ball State game never materialized, the game was to be played in Killiney, Ireland and was billed as the Shamrock Bowl.  Materials were printed, some (stress the word some) vacation packages were sold, and the promoter backed out in October, and the game was played in Muncie, In.  Several lawsuits were filed over this fiasco.  The game was 1990, and Bubba was not on the team at that time.

nothing official, but according to twitter OHIO won by 10 in spite of being called for fouls 42 times. 5 players fouled out, DJ was gone after 15 minutes.

Good Info perimeter post.   From the above link, this looks like their  schedule:

 "BASKETBALL SUMMER OF THUNDER

THE Bahamas Basketball Federation is slated to continue its "Summer of Thunder" College Scrimmages tonight at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.

Ohio University is in town and is expected to play the first of two games against the defending New Providence Basketball Association champions Commonwealth Bank Giants at 7:30pm.

They will take a break and come back on Wednesday to finish up the series against a select Bahamas All-Star team."

Ohio Basketball team was to spend Thursday enjoying what the Bahama's has to offer, site seeing and so forth, The team will leave the Bahama's on Friday morning and arrive in Athens on Friday evening, time unknown.

This is correct.  Yours truly and his wife were among those buying one of the "vacation packages" to Ireland to see the game and do a little site seeing.  Charlie Ping, honorable man that he is, dipped into some contingency fund and refunded our deposit when the promoter went belly up.  The wife and I then booked a trip to Germany and went there instead and had a nice time.  Thank you Charlie!
