Cooper's best year, statiscally, was his sophomore year, and he was robbed then. In 2011 Justin Greene won with 7 votes, Cooper tied Mavunga for second place with 4  votes a piece. Look at how their numbers stack up with each other and explain to me how the best Cooper could finish was a tie for 2nd.

Greene- 15.4pts, 8.3reb, 1.6ast, 1.1stl, 1.4blk
Cooper- 15.8pts, 5.0reb, 7.5ast*, 2.3stl**, 0.3blk
Mavunga- 14.8pts, 8.2reb, 3.0ast, 0.6stl, 0.5blk

*2nd in the nation in assists
**17th in the nation in steals

If that's the best voters can do after the Freshman of the Year leads his team to a big upset in the NCAA tournament then I have no faith in them recognizing Cooper's accomplishment this year either.

All-MAC was announced March 7 last year, which was the Wednesday of the MAC tournament. I believe all the awards were announced at that time.

Ball State believes they have the player of the year in Jauvan Scaife

HAHAHAHAHA

Juanny is a great kid from a super family. That was spurred by a member of the press that covers the MAC somewhere other than Muncie and the SID ran with it. I think that is a good SID move to promote your University. Unrealistic maybe but that is what he gets paid for and certainly given Scaife's current scoring tear.....I would be pissed if it was my kid and the school did not at least give him some support/

I don't doubt the kid is a great person and he is having a very good season, but maybe they should push him for all-mac team and not player of the year

That is not the job of an SID. Most every HS here in Indiana advances a candidate for Mr Basketball by taking out ads in Hooser Basketball. BSU submits a candidate for MAC POY as every SID SHOULD. I tend to build guys up while it looks from these posts that you might think it is incumbent on the school or SID to aim low or try to slot the kid where they think he may end up.

I do not think they are doing anything less than their job demands. I expect that any other SID that is not pushing for their own kids should be fired. Evans should have the full backing of the Can't SID staff for POY whether they think he has a shot or not. It is their job. YOU deciding that he is not worthy has no bearing on their responsibility to back their player.

FOr you to laugh gleefully at their effort is somewhat telling. I do not care if you laugh because you think DJ is much better but you are laughing at a guy who is doing his job and the institution for backing their player .....that makes you look a bit silly to me.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

The game loves and rewards those who love and reward the game

I think Player and Coach of the Year come out tomorrow, Freshman, Sixth Man and Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday and All-MAC Wednesday. Last year there were five players each on the first, second and third teams and six honorable mention (a tie, I'd guess).

Here's some stats from the top candidates:

Cool, that makes more sense. It was opposite last year.

Obviously, DJ will be first team. What about Reggie or Walt? Any guesses?

I really hope Coop wins PoY.  I do think Dambrot should win CoY, and Zeke is a lock for DPoY.  I really can't see them sweeping the major awards.  DJ did just win another MAC Player of the Week award, so it's clear the voters paid attention this weekend and saw him will his team to 2 Ws and a share of the title.  Coop scored more points than Zeke, and he led the conference in steals and assists (the latter by a large margin, and 6th nationally).  To me, that SHOULD do it.  I acknowledge Zekes improvement, but I think he impacts a game more on the defensive end, and they have an award for that.

Keely could have a shot at 3rd team.  Walt was too inconsistent, but maybe grabs honorable mention.

My picks:

1st Team
Cooper
Evans
Marshall
McCrae
Treadwell

PoY - Cooper
CoY - Dambrot
FoY - Skeete
DPoY - Marshall

I'll play. Knowing what I know about how the MAC has voted for these things in the past, here's my best guess (note this is what I think THEY will do, not what I think it SHOULD be).

1st Team
DJ Cooper - Sr - Ohio
Zeke Marshall - Sr - Akron
Jauwan Scaife - Sr - Ball St
Chris Evans - Sr - Kent St
Randal Holt - Sr - Kent St

2nd Team
Javon McCrea - Jr - Buffalo
Rian Pearson - Jr - Toledo
Tony Watson - Sr - Buffalo
Demetrius Treadwell - Jr - Akron
Alex Abreu - Jr - Akron

Honorable Mention
Kyle Randall - Sr - C Michigan
A'uston Calhoun - Sr - BG
Jordan Crawford - Sr - BG
Shayne Whittington - Jr - W Michigan
Reggie Keely - Sr - Ohio
Jesse Berry - Jr - Ball St

FoY - Jarryn Skeete - Buffalo
CoY - Keith Dambrot - Akron
DPoY - Zeke Marshall - Akron
PoY - Chris Evans - Kent St

In conference games Evans is averaging 16.8 points (5th - DJ is 9th at 14.8), 7.7 rebounds (5th - DJ isn't in top 20), 2.9 assists (t12th - DJ is 3rd at 6.3) and shooting 50.3% from the field (9th - DJ is 14th at 44.8). Plus he's a senior on a top team in the league and is a guy nobody thinks should actually win it.

It almost makes too much sense.

It'll either be him or Zeke. Bank it.

You'd think the number of POW (player of week) citations would be a factor.  I'm guessing that DJ had about 6 of those.  Who was 2nd with how many?  The point is well made that DJ gives you offense and defense whereas the 'kron guy mostly gives you only D.

I think Cooper, Marshall, McCrae and Evans are pretty easy choices for first team. The fifth player I'd lean toward Scaife, but Pierson and maybe even Calhoun or Whittington are right there. It will be intresting to see where Randall falls as the league's top scorer. I'd guess the 2nd team. Treadwell probably will be 2nd team but I'm sure he'll get some first-team votes. Holt will be in the second-teeam mix but shouldn't be based on his shooting percentages. Same with Crawford, who probably shouldn't really be better than honorable mention, in my opinion. Keely deserves third but I don't think he'll get it. Walt deserves honorable mention but I don't think he'll get it either.

My guesses:
1st team: Cooper, Marshall, McCrae, Evans, Scaife.
2nd team: Pierson, Calhoun, Whittington, Treadwell, Randall.
3rd team: Holt, Majok, Abreu, Crawford, Brown.
Honorable mention: Keely, Felder, Watson, Harney, Brewer.

It's too bad this article didn't come out before the POTY voting but it's pretty telling on who the actual players think are the best players.  Some surprising stuff.

Take It, And Make It

Who do you want to take the last shot?

1. D.J. Cooper — Ohio

1. Randal Holt — Kent State

3. Nick Kellogg — Ohio

3. Jordon Crawford — Bowling Green

Nine players with votes here. But Cooper, Holt and Crawford — also the top three guards in the poll — are all seniors and have stepped up in the clutch many times throughout their careers. The reputation of Kellogg, a junior, continues to grow.

I posted this in another thread, and I hope it means Elton is leaning towards DJ as POY...

"Elton Alexander" wrote:
The only college player one can argue who had better numbers than Cooper (and in just three seasons) was Oscar Robertson, generally considered the best all-around college (and pro) basketball player in history. The NCAA did not keep steals stats in his era, and only counted assists in two of his three seasons. But "The Big O" delivered 2,973 points, 1,338 rebounds, 425 assists (two years) and an unknown number of steals for the Cincinnati Bearcats.
That's the company Cooper's numbers sit with, and quite possibly could land him 2013 MAC Player of the Year honors.

As for my guesses on the awards... (I think Abreu would have been second team until his recent troubles)

All-MAC First Team:
  • DJ Cooper, Ohio
  • Chris Evans, Kent
  • Rian Pierson, Toledo
  • Javon McCrea, Buffalo
  • Zeke Marshall, Akron

All-MAC Second Team:
  • Jauwan Scaife, Ball St.
  • Kyle Randall, CMU
  • A'uston Calhoun, BG
  • Demetrius Treadwell, Akron
  • Shayne Whittington, WMU

All-MAC Third Team:
  • Julius Brown, Toledo
  • Jordan Crawford, BG
  • Randall Holt, Kent
  • Reggie Keely, Ohio
  • Majok Majok, Ball St.

All Freshman Team:
  • Chris Fowler, CMU
  • Jarryn Skeete, Buffalo
  • Jake Kretzer, Akron
  • Nathan Boothe, Toledo
  • Darius Paul, WMU

POY: DJ Cooper, Ohio
DPOY: Zeke Marshall, Akron
6th Man: Reese Holliday, Toledo (Maybe Thompson from EMU or Holmes from BG)
FOY: Darius Paul, WMU
COY: Keith Dambrot, Akron

My vote would go to Tod Kowalczyk.  With nothing to play for he had an extra tough job but he managed to have the team playing really well down the stretch.  They finished the year winning 9 of 12 to win a share of the West crown.  I have no problem with Dambrot winning it but he had much easier job.  His toughest task was keeping enough Doritos at practice to keep the team happy.

That would be a fun first team to watch play.  Lots of lobs from DJ to Zeke with aggressive scoring from Pierson and Evans.

I wish Reg could get 2nd team awards but I'm not sure who he'd bump out.  I'd put him in but I doubt the voters would.

With Pearson and McCrea being juniors you have to think it's a 3 horse race between DJ, Zeke and Evans for PoY now.

2012-2013
Cooper and Pearson had the most POW's this year with 5.  Zeke, Whitt, and Evans all had 4 each.

2011-2012
Cooper, Brown, Jones, and McCrea had the most with 2 each.  Mitchell Watt won the POY, but only had 1 POW.

2010-2011
Greene led with 5 POW and won POY.  Cooper and Jones both had 3 POW.

Not a lot of kick out opportunities though.  Of course, there would be a pretty good chance that any missed shot would be a put back.
