Bobcats dominated by Chips' defense, Rawls, Davis

Central Michigan tops Ohio, 28-10

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Thomas Rawls and Titus Davis combined for more than 400 yards of offense to more than double Ohio’s team production as Central Michigan rolled to a 28-10 victory Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Playing without starting quarterback Derrius Vick and running back A.J. Ouellette, the Bobcats (3-3, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) got nothing going on offense and were limited to 187 yards and eight first downs. Meanwhile, the senior pair for the Chippewas did plenty. Rawls ran for 229 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries, and Davis caught 10 passes, including two for scores, for 181 yards.

Ohio was limited to just 24 yards and two first downs in the first half and trailed 14-3, and it could have been worse had the defense not settled in after a slow start of its own.

Davis caught a 53-yard pass to set up his 4-yard catch for a touchdown, and on the next possession for the Chippewas, Davis got behind the defense again for a 32-yard receiving score on a third-and-12 play.

With the offense struggling, the Bobcats had a big opportunity to get back in the game in the final minute of the first half when Tarell Basham sacked Cooper Rush and forced the ball out. Kylan Nelson came with the team’s first fumble recovery of the year, but Ohio settled for a 24-yard Josiah Yazadi field goal after taking over at Central Michigan’s 5-yard line.

After a Devin Bass interception was overturned on replay, Rawls scored on a 15-yard touchdown run to extend the Chippewas’ lead to 21-3, and the Bobcats failed to answer despite a 49-yard Daz’mond Patterson run. Ohio opted to go for it on fourth-and-5 from the 17-yard line, and J.D. Sprague threw incomplete.

Two big plays on their next possession finally got the Bobcats in the end zone. Chase Cochran caught a 46-yard pass and Sprague kept on an option play for 24 yards to the 1-yard line, and finally, on third-and-goal, Tim Edmond plowed into the end zone to make it 21-10.

Rawls, a transfer from Michigan who was suspended for two games earlier in the year, came back with a 1-yard plunge for his second touchdown for the final score of the afternoon. Davis also missed action early in the year for the Chippewas (3-3, 1-1 MAC) due to an injury.

Rush finished 17-of-27 passing 233 yards, while for Ohio, Sprague was just 7 of 21 for 98 yards. Patterson had 12 carries for 77 yards.

Minutes the three big plays from Patterson, Cochran and Sprague, the Bobcats had only 68 yards on their other 41 plays. Central Michigan ran 79 plays and had held possession for 42:19.

Ohio hosts Bowling Green at 2 p.m. Saturday for homecoming at Peden Stadium.
