Bobcats rally in final minute for first-ever bowl victory

BOISE, Idaho – Tyler Tettleton ran in from 1 yard out with 13 seconds left to give Ohio its first-ever bowl victory, 24-23, against Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday evening at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho.

The Bobcats matched their all-time school record for wins by finishing the year 10-4 with the come-from-behind victory against the Aggies.

“There's been a lot of great wins here, and I appreciate every one," Ohio coach Frank Solich said. "This one obviously is kind of an answer to what these guys wanted to get done at the beginning of the year, and what we all wanted in terms of winning a bowl game. To accomplish that and get the first win in the history of Ohio football was meaningful to me, these players and this staff."

Behind a strong rushing attack, Utah State led 23-10 in the third quarter, but Tettleton and MVP LaVon Brazill, who finished with eight catches for 108 yards, helped rally Ohio.

Brazill made a leaping catch for a 44-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to make it a six-point game, and the Bobcats held on defense the rest of the game.

After pinning Utah State (7-6) inside the 10-yard line, Ohio forced a three-and-out to give it a do-or-die possession from its own 39-yard line with 2:02 remaining.

Tettleton connected with Riley Dunlop for 19 yards on the first play, got a 9-yard Donte Harden run and then got 15 yards on a Tettleton scamper to give it a first down at the Utah State 18-yard line.

After an incompletion, Harden ran for seven yards, and on third down, Tettleton lost 3 yards on an option play, setting up fourth-and-6.

Following a timeout, Tettleton found Brazill down the middle and he nearly broke a tackle into the end zone, but after a long review, he was ruled down inside the 1-yard line. Tettleton was stuffed trying to run up the middle on first down, but he found plenty of room around the right size to the corner of the end zone on second down.

"It was designed as a fake quarterback sneak and we were going to have two guys on the flat to the left," Tettleton said. "I got a rush up the middle and tried to make something happen after that and I was wide open to the end zone."

Matt Weller’s extra point put the Bobcats in the lead, and the Aggies’ attempt to score with multiple laterals on their only play from scrimmage was stopped shy of midfield to end the game.

Tettelton completed 19 of 26 passes for 220 yards and a pair of scores.

His first touchdown pass helped Ohio overcome a slow start that had it down 9-0 in the first quarter. He connected with tight end Derek Roback for a 26-yard score with about five minutes to before halftime, leaving the score at 9-7 at the break.

Utah State was stuffed on fourth down at the 1-yard line on its first possession, but it still managed points when Tettleton fumbled in the end zone and fell on the ball for a safety.

Adam Kennedy threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tarren Lloyd on the ensuing possession to quickly put the Aggies up 9-0.

Michael Smith, who rushed for 157 yards on just 12 carries, scored on a 63-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. Ohio answered with a 32-yard Weller field goal that made it 16-10 still early in the third.

Smith scored on an 11-yard run on the Aggies’ next possession to make it 23-10, but the Bobcats got the touchdown right back on Brazill’s touchdown catch.

Ohio’s defense held three times the rest of the way, setting up the offense’s winning drive.

Robert Turbin racked up 101 yards on 20 rushing attempts as Utah State finished the game with 345 yards on the ground. The Aggies passed for only 96 yards.

Harden and Beau Blankenship each ran for 47 yards as Ohio was held to 125 yards rushing. The Bobcats were outgained 441-345 in the game.

Utah State’s Josh Thompson missed a 39-yard field goal after Ohio’s first-half touchdown and the Aggies twice punted in the second half after getting into Bobcats territory, missing out on scoring opportunities.
